Funeral services were held Monday, July 30, 11 a.m. at East Side Free Will Baptist Church at Thelma, Ky., for Pricie Lou Baldwin, 86, who passed away Saturday, July 28 2007 at Highlands Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg, Ky. Mrs. Baldwin was born March 25, 1921 in Johnson County, Ky., daughter of the late Tom and Nannie Mollette Childers. She was a homemaker. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sherman Baldwin. Surviving are one brother, Martin Childers, and one sister, Agnis Butcher, both of Thelma; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. JOHNSON COUNTY —David Blanton, 71, of Cynthiana, died Monday, Oct. 31, at Cynthiana. Born Oct. 19, 1940, at Thelma, he was the son of the late Mason and Emma Childers Blanton. He was a construction worker. Survivors include his wife, Liz Gatliff Blanton; three sons, Todd Allen Blanton of Sadieville, Joseph Scott Blanton of Cynthiana and David Bryan Blanton of Lawrence, Kan.; a brother, Robert Blanton of Thelma; three sisters, Helen Stafford of Van Lear, Betty Carr of South Carolina and Katherine Butcher of Shelby, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Thursday, Nov. 3, at Preston Funeral Home, with James Roger VanHoose officiating, under direction of Preston Funeral Home, Paintsville. Big Sandy News Nov.

Eliza M. "Liz" Blanton, 75, Cynthiana, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2017 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.
She was born in Knox County, Aug. 16, 1942 to the late Ancil and Martha Lawson Gatliff. She retired from the Johnson County Board of Education. Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, David Allen Blanton, and two brothers, Curtis Gatliff and Louis Gatliff.
She is survived by three sons, David Brian (Yvonne)Blanton, St. Louis, Missouri, Todd Allen (Deanna) Blanton and Joseph Scott (Belinda) Blanton, both of Cynthiana; a brother, Nolan Gatliff, Barbourville; six sisters, Hildridge Bunch, Rockholds, Florence Matlock, Ohio, Diana Segura, Texas, Edith Logan, Barbourville, Brenda Watson, Florida and Barbara Grubb, Barbourville; nine grandchildren, Katrina Blanton, Maureen Diaz, Allison Jager, Ethan Blanton, Hannah Robinson, Chase Blanton, Joey Blanton, Hunter Blanton and Wynter Hope Blanton; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family in Paintsville, KY. Ware Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning at the Thelma School for Mason Blanton, 47, an employee of the C&O Railroad Company, who died in a local hospital Wednesday following an illness of five days. Born March 1, 1908 in Magoffin County, he was the son of the late Andy Jack and Marybelle Fugate Blanton. He had been a resident of this city for 40 years. He is survived by his wife, Emma Childers Blanton, two sons, David Allan and Robert Lynn Blanton, both at home; five daughters, Mrs. Mary Fern Yount and Mrs. Betty Faye Carr, both of Springfield, Ohio; Mrs. Helen Rebecca Bowen, Columbus, Ohio; Thelma Catherine and Diana Blanton, both at home. William Blessing, 35 years old, of Thelma, an employee of the C. & O. Railway for the past 20 years, died at his home Wednesday, November 21. His death came as a result of an attack of typhoid. Funeral services were held Friday, November 23, and burial was in the family cemetery near Thelma. He is survived by his wife and two small children. Mr. Blessing was a member of the United Baptist Church and one of the leading citizens of his community. His long service with the railway company and his activity in the church and the affairs of his neighborhood made for him a host of friends who will miss him greatly. SERVICES HELD FRIDAY FOR AGED RESIDENT
Albert Boyd, 83, died of a heart attack at his home at Thelma, Thursday, December 28. Born in Lawrence County, September 17, 1871, the son of Isom and Mary Fitchpatrick Boyd, he had resided at Thelma for the past 40 years. A member of the Primitive Baptist Church, he was formerly engaged in farming and employed as a foreman for the railroad. ( He was married in 1908?? to Louise Estep who survives??)

Surviving besides his wife, are ten children: seven daughters, Lydia Sellards and Ethel Ward, both of this city; Thelma Daniel, Tutor Key; Lee Verda Boyd, Christine Daniel and Eloise Begley, all of Dayton, OH; Zelda Short, Meally; three sons, Jess Boyd of Flatwoods, Everett Boyd of this city; and Elmer Boyd of Dayton, OH. Funeral services were held Friday, December 31 at the Bobs Branch Primitive Baptist Church with Rev. Henry Stamper and Rev. Wheeler officiating. Burial was in the family cemetery under the direction of the Preston Funeral Home.

Alicha was born October 13th, 1976 in Columbus, Ohio, daughter of the late Paul Meek, Sr. and Rebecca Childers Meek. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by one brother, Paul Russell Meek II.

She is survived by her husband, Terry Burchett of La Grange, Kentucky; two sons, Tanner Joseph Burchett and Aaron Mason Burchett both of Stambaugh, Kentucky; and one sister, Deidre Meek of Louisville, Kentucky.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 25th, 2015 in the Jones-Preston Funeral Chapel with Dewey Mac Mullins officiating. Clarence E. "Joe" Butcher, 65, died Friday, December 25, at Highland Regional Medical Center. Mr. Butcher was born February 3, 1933, in Johnson County to the late Estill and Bertha Steel Butcher. He was a carpenter and veteran of the U. S. Army. Surviving are his wife Agnes Childers Butcher, two sons, Samuel and Lyndon Butcher , both of Thelma, two daughters, Joyce Prater and Nannette Blanton, both of Thelma, two sisters, Juanita Ward of OH and Vivian Pauley of Albion, MI., 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Burial was in Childers family cemetery at Thelma.

Agnis Childers Butcher, age 85 of Bob’s Branch, Thelma, KY; passed away Friday, May 11th, 2018 in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, KY. She is survived by two sons, Lyndon Butcher and wife  Sammie of Thelma, KY and Sammy Butcher and wife Rita of Thelma, KY; two daughters, Joyce Prater and husband Victor of Thelma, KY; Nannette Bailey of Paintsville, KY; Seven grandchildren and Eleven great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 14th, 2018 in the Jones-Preston Funeral Chapel with Harry Neil Frisby and Johnny Mollett officiating.   Burial will follow in the Childers Family Cemetery, Thelma, KY.

JOHNNIE CHILDERS, JOHNSON VETERAN KILLED IN MINES
Johnnie Childers. 29, a veteran of World War II, and a native of Johnson County was killed by a slate fall in the mines at Wheelwright last Wednesday. Funeral services were held Friday at the home at Thealka, and interment was in the family cemetery there. Mr. Childers served in the last war with the Navy and participated in nine major engagements while on sea duty. He entered the armed forces in 1942 and received his discharge in Nov. 9, 1945. He was a son of Thomas and Nannie Mollette Childers of Thelma, and had been a lifelong resident of that area. He was married to Eunice Salmons who preceded him in death June 6, 1941. To this union were born two children: James Vernon and John Kenneth Childers, who survive. Later he married Pauline Holbrook, and to this union were born three children; Thomas K., Johnette, and Frank Marion Who with their mother survive. Tom Childers, 91, died Thursday, June 2, in the Paintsville Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Childers was born November 23, 1885 in Lawrence County, the son of Jack and Pricie Boyd Childers. He was a resident of Thelma and a member of the Primitive Baptist church. His wife, Nannie Mollett Slone, preceded him in death on April 6, 1965. Surviving are two sons, Martin and Leonard, both of Thelma; eight daughters, Exer Blessing, Hester Hall and Ruth Wright of Paintsville, Essie Johnson of Prestonsburg, Emma James, Faye Rowland and Agnis Butcher, all of Thelma and Pricie Brooks of Marion, OH; a brother, John Childers of Whitehouse; 40 grandchildren, 77 great grandchildren, and 11 great-great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday, June 5, in the Primitive Baptist Church at Thelma with Reverends Avery B. Lowe, Paul Keaton and John W. Kirk officiating. Services To Be Held Thursday At Thelma For Auxier Resident Milroy Daniels, 61, died at his home at Auxier Tuesday, April 13, 1954 following an illness of a year. The son of the late Basil and Arminta Castle Daniels, he was born April 1, 1893, in Johnson County. He had been a resident of Auxier for 31 years. He was a miner by occupation. Surviving are his wife, Hattie Ward Daniels, two sons, Mack R. Daniel, Man, W. Va. and Paul V. Daniels, Amherstdale W. Va., one sister, Mrs. Ernest Preston, Offutt, and one brother Newt Daniels, Pueblo, Ohio. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 15, 1954 at the Thelma Regular Primitive Baptist Church with Henry Stamper as officiating minister. Mrs. Hettie Daniel, 79, Auxier, died Monday in the Mountain Manor Nursing Home in Prestonsburg following an extended illness. Mrs. Daniel was born Oct. 16, 1894, in Johnson County, a daughter of the late Asbury and Belle Price Ward. She was a member of the United Baptist Church. Her husband, Milroy Daniel, died in 1953. Surviving are two sons, Paul V. Daniel of Thelma and M. R. Daniel of Lexington; four sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Meade, Mrs. Sally Daniel and Mrs. Ella Johnson, all of Thelma, and Mrs. Exer Holbrook of Williamsport; three grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Friendship Primitive Baptist Church at Thelma by Paul E. Keaton and Robie Ferguson, ministers. Burial will be in the family cemetery at Thelma. The body is at the Jones - Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville where friends may call.

Thelma Preacher Claimed By Death
Rev. Troy Daniel, 67, of Thelma, for 33 years a minister of the Regular Primitive Baptist Church and at the time of his death, pastor of the Old Friendship Church at Bobb's Branch, died Wednesday morning,August 28,1946, at the Paintsville Hospital following a brief illness. Funeral services were conducted Friday at the Old Friendship Church, the Rev. D. C. Taylor, Henry Stamper, James Gambill, and Newton Daniel officiating. Interment was in the family cemetery at Bobb's Siding by the Jones Funeral Home. Rev. Daniel was a truly great preacher in his church and was one of the county's most outstanding citizen's. He was well and favorably known throughout this area and will be sadly missed by a host of relatives and friends. He was a kind and loving husband, a gentle father his death has created a vacuum which will be hard to fill. In May, 1908, Rev. Daniels was married to Miss Sallie Ward, who survives with their five children: Jewell R. Daniels, of Jacksonville,Fla., Mrs. Ralph Ward, of Freeburn,KY., Asa B. Daniels, of Williamsport, Virgil Daniels, of Cincinatti, Oh., and Eva Mae Daniels, of Thelma. Other survivors are two brothers, Milroy Daniels, of Auxier and Newton Daniels, of Prestonsburg; two sisters, Mrs. Earn Preston, of Offutt, and Mrs. Henry Engle, of St. Charles,Va., and 12 grandchildren. At the age of 87, Sallie Daniel passed way in the home of her daughter, Ena Mae Childers at Thelma Sunday, May 25. Mrs. Daniel was the daughter of the late Asbury and Laura Bell Price Ward and was born March 24, 1888. She was preceded in death by her husband, Troy Daniel, who died august 28, 1946. She was a member of the Regular Primitive Baptist Church. Surviving are 3 sons; J. R. Daniel of Jacksonville, Fl., A. B. Daniel of Williamsport, and Virgil Daniel of Cincinnati, OH; 2 daughters, Opal Ward of River and Ena Mae Childers of Thelma; 1 sister, Mrs. Ella Johnson of Thelma; 21 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, at the Friendship Primitive Baptist Church in Thelma. The officiating ministers were Avery Lowe, Paul Keaton, and Teddy R. Hall. Estep of Denver, Gene Estep and Roger Estep of Columbus, OH, Eral Estep of Thelma, Bertha Blankenship of Columbus, Alene McCoy of Wheelwright, and Varna Mae Sammons of Danville. The daughter of Sylba Perry Ratliff of Richardson and the late Walter Ratliff, she was born in this city February 18, 1932.  She was a member of the United Baptist Church. Surviving besides her mother and husband are a daughter, Kathy Lee, at home; one brother, William Ratliff, Richardson; two sisters, Pauline Perry, Richardson; Margaret Booth, River. Exer Holbrook died at her home in Williamsport, Friday, May 16, 1975 at the age of 75  after a brief illness.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenis Holbrook. She was born Dec 27, 1899, th daughter of the late Asbury and Laura Bell Ward. She was a member of the United Baptist Church.  She is survived by one son, Kenis Holbrook, Jr or Marion, OH, 7 daughters, Betty Ward of Columbus, OH; Doris Lee of Point Pleasant, WV, Dorothy Childers of Thelma, Kathreen Daniels, Gwen Williamson, Pauline Duty, and Juanita Preston all of Williamsport; 2 sisters, Mrs. Ella Johnson and Mrs. Sally Daniels both of Thelma.  Funeral servies were held at 11 am Sunday, May 18, 1975 at the Old Friendship United Baptist Church in Williamsport. “Will Frosty” Was Prominent Thelma Farmer For Years
William Shadric Preston, 83 years old, known as “Will Frosty” died Tuesday, December 28 from intestinal tuberculosis, following a long illness.  He died at the home of his son, W. J. Preston, where he had lived for the past six years.  He had been in poor health for the last fifteen years. Mr. Preston, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Eliphus Preston, was married in 1876 to Miss Nancy Jane Travis who died forty years ago. Besides his son with whom he resided, Mr. Preston is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Malinda Preston Combs and eighteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  Also, two half brothers, Sol Preston and John C. Preston of Mingo. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. U. S. Walters and Rev. L. T. He was born November 30, 1944 in Johnson County, Kentucky to Epp and Louise (Jackson) Spears, and moved to the Mansfield area 25 years ago from Kentucky.

Jerry had worked at Hi-Stat in Lexington.

Described as a “down to earth country boy”, Jerry enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing. He could shake-up a mean hand of euchre, and had an eclectic taste in music ~ from oldies, to 80’s rock, to country.

Jerry dearly loved his kids and grandkids. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law Jerry Eugene and Michelle Spears of Piketon, a daughter and son-in-law Kimberly and James Dollarhide of Waverly, a daughter and son-in-law Marjorie and Carl, II, McFarland of Cardington, a daughter Shauntell Spears and her fiancé Brandon Shepherd of New London, and a son Jerry Edward Spears, Jr. of Lexington; eight grandchildren Christa Spears, Zachariah Spears, Angela Dollarhide, James Dollarhide, III, Jeremiah Dollarhide, Nathan Dorton, Logan McFarland, Daniel Shepherd; a granddaughter on the way Savannah McFarland; three great grandchildren; several siblings including John Setser of Bellville, Velcie and Earl Junior Daniels of Alger, Garnet and Curtis Lehner of Mansfield, Lucille and Charles Gray of Mansfield, and Will Spears of Hagerhill, Kentucky; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Asbury Ward, age 77, died Sunday, June 14, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Paris Preston, of Williamsport. Mr. Ward had been in ill health for the past two years, but his death was attributed to the infirmities of advanced age. Mr. Ward was a prominent citizen of the county and a member of a large family. He had always been known as a fine citizen and for thirty years has been a devout Christian and a member of the United Baptist Church. He was the father of a large family of children. His two sons, C. C. Ward and Mack Ward are citizens of Paintsville. Funeral and burial took place at Thelma Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock and in charge of Rev. W. W. Smith, Rev. Troy Daniel and Rev. O. C. Taylor. Funeral arrangements were in charge of Rev. Guy W. Preston of the undertaking department of the Mountain Furniture & Hardware Company. He is survived by nine children, seven or who are living. They are C. C. Ward and Mack Ward of Paintsville, Ella Johnson, Thelma, Alka Preston of Williamsport, Sallie Davis of Thelma, Lizzie Meade of Thelma, Hettie Daniels of Auxier, Exer Holbrook, of Thelma. The two deceased were Shady and Cyrus Ward. He had forty-eight grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren. He joined the United Baptist Church at Old Friendship February 7, 1899 for which he lived a devoted Christian and was loved by all. He was a good husband and loved his family. For the last four years he made his home with his daughter Alka Preston of Williamsport. He was buried at Bobb Siding Tuesday June 16, at 10 o'clock a.m. The Funeral was preached by W. W. Smith, Troy Daniel and O. C. Taylor. The body was taken care of by the Mountain Furniture Co., of Paintsville. This family lived on Bobb's Branch, near Bobb's Railroad Siding, below the present Thelma Community Center.

Mrs. Laura Bell Ward, 85, died Wednesday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Paris Preston, at Williamsport, following a lingering illness. Funeral services are incomplete.  Mrs. Ward is survived by two sons, C. C. Ward and Mack Ward, both of Paintsville; six daughters Mrs. Preston of Williamsport; Mrs. Ella Johnson, Mrs. Sally Daniel, Mrs. Lizzie Meade, and Mrs. Exer Holbrook, all of Thelma; Mrs. Hollie Daniel, of Auxier; two brothers, C. C. Price, of Paintsville and John Price, of Thelma; 35 grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren.

JOHNSON COUNTY — Gwendolyn “Gwen” Williamson, 73, of Williamsport, died Saturday, Aug. 17, at Mountain Manor Nursing Home, Paintsville. Born June 8, 1940, in Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late Kennis and Exer Ward Holbrook.  Survivors include her husband, Wallace Williamson; a daughter, Paula Wells of Paintsville; a brother, Bud Holbrook Jr., of Cincinnati, Ohio; two sisters, Kathleen Daniel of Paintsville and Bonnie Preston of Anderson, Ind.; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 19, at Tom's Creek Freewill Baptist Church, with James Kelly Caudill officiating. Mary Ruth Childers Wright, 76, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001 at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Wright was born April 15, 1925, in Johnson County, to the late Thomas and Nanny Mollette Childers. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Burl Wright, in 1990. Surviving are one son, Cam Price Jr. of Nippa; two daughters, Carolyn Sexton of Thelma and Daryl Lockhart of Lexington; one brother, Martin Childers of Thelma; three sisters, Pricie Baldwin, Faye Rowland and Agnis Butcher, all of Thelma; and six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 12, at Friendship Primitive Baptist Church, Thelma, with Michael Elswick and David May officiating. Burial followed in the family cemetery at Thelma.   PH
