History:

The Tombstone Monument has the birth date as Nov 1842, but date the in Preston family Bible has June. This monument as well as all the monuments in this cemetery were removed when this cemetery was destroyed. Pictures of this cemetery at the Lawrence County Kentucky Tax Assessors Office made in 1992 and 1995 showed 11 monuments but the picture did not include the monument of John W. Preston and Paulina/Pauline Preston or the monument of Myrtle Preston. These two monuments were out of range of the picture. Including these two there were 13 monuments removed. These two monuments were later replaced but we are not sure if they are in the exact place as before. There were at least two people buried in this cemetery that we know had no monuments: John H. and his wife, Lorah Childers Preston. This would have made a total buried there of 15 and maybe more unmarked which we don't have anyway of knowing at this time. We are told there were some Vaughans buried in this cemetery also. This McDonald Preston Cemetery I find first mentioned in a deed of this property when it was sold to James W. and Sarilda Preston Akers on September 10, 1920. The deed states: The Mcd. Preston graveyard is exzepted out of this conveyance and not conveyed and said graveyard lot is to be twenty feet longer than as now fenced.

At the time this cemetery was destroyed, it was fenced with a chain link fence. At this time there is no physical sign of The McD. Preston graveyard or the fact that it ever existed except for the two monuments that were replaced.

This large fenced cemetery was established in approximately 1867 by John McDonald Preston, to be completely destroyed in the 1990s. There were at least 13 beautiful monuments, many graves marked with field stones and many more unmarked. We can identify only five of the deceased with monuments, a total of nine of the deceased for the entire cemetery. We do know there were other family names of deceased buried here including the name Vaughn."
