J. L. (Jake) Neal, 75, a veteran court official of Star Route Louisa, succumbed to a heart attack near his residence Wednesday, February 8, at 9:15 a.m. just after he left the house en route to Louisa with a neighbor. Mr. Neal a farmer was born May 23, 1885, a son of the late Charles and Josephine Belcher Neal on Route 4, Louisa, where he resided for 28 years. He later moved to Big Catt Creek where he had resided for 47 years at the time of his death. He had been elected Magistrate of District 6 for 8 terms and was the oldest officer of the Lawrence County Fiscal Court in point of service. According to court records he has served 32 years in that position. He was known as a man of integrity and was outspoken on the various issues which confronted the court from time to time. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday from the Dennis Methodist Chapel with the Rev. Gallie Isaac and the Rev. Fred Vanhorn officiating. Burial was in Neal and Kitchen Cemetery on Catt Creek. The body was removed from the Curtright Funeral Home to the residence at 2 p.m. Friday. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Hattie Ethel Webb Neal, to whom he had been married 49 years; three daughters, Mrs. Cornie C. Bishop of Route 1, Webbville, Mrs. Lincoln Kitchen, Star Route, Louisa and Mrs. Willie Ray Wilson of Webbville; three sons, Maxwell Neal of South Point, OH, Charles A. Neal of Elwood City, PA, and James L. Neal of Elyria, OH; a sister, Mrs. Lora Belcher of South Point; 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Big Sandy News, February 16,1961
