James Akers
James Akers, 71, of Tutor Key, died in a local hospital Saturday, July 13, following an extended illness. The son of the late Millard and Myrtle Vina Preston Akers, he was born August 29, 1902. Mr. Akers was a retired miner and member of the Chandlersville Masonic Lodge No. 858 F & AM. He is survived by his wife, Gussie Brown Akers, one daughter, Betty Jo Lowe of Dayton, OH; a brother, Mitchell Akers of Ashland, four sisters, Naomi Baldwin of Ashland, Millisa VanHoose of Nippa, Sophia Beam of Ashland and Evelyn Young of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Akers were held Monday, July 15, in the Bakers Branch Freewill Baptist church at Tutor Key with Reverends C. C. Hall and Claude Preston officiating. Burial was in the Jesse Daniels Cemetery at River with arrangements under the direction of the Jones-Preston Funeral Home. Masonic services were conducted by the Chandlersville Masonic Lodge No. 858 F & AM.

Gussie Akers, 86, died Thursday, January 4, in Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson. Mrs. Akers was born January 13, 1903 in Johnson County, the daughter of Lewis and Judy Arrowood Brown. She was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Akers in 1974. Surviving are two 1/2 sisters, Blanch Brown and Lillie Brown both of Paintsville; one sister-in-law, Melissa VanHoose of Nippa; 2 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 6, in Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Dick VanHoose officiating. Burial was in Daniels Cemetery at River.

Angie Daniels
Mrs. Angie Daniels, 88, died Saturday, October 30, in Prestonsburg after an extended illness. She was born November 8, 1887, the daughter of H. K. and Mariah Jayne Auxier Brown. Mrs. Daniels was a resident of River and a member of the Borders Chapel Methodist Church. Her husband, Jess Daniels, preceded her in death on July 26, 1965. Surviving are two sons, Charles A. of Paintsville and Walter E. of River; a daughter, Edith Jayne Chapman of Concord, TN, a sister Nora Haws of Milledgeville, GA; four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services were held Monday, November 1, in the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Milam officiating. Burial was in the family cemetery at River with Jones-Preston Funeral Home handling arrangements.

Mr. Jesse Daniel, 77, died at his home July 26th at 7:15 P.M. of a heart attack. Born at River, April 7, 1888, he was George Daniel and was a member of the Methodist Church. He was a cattle dealer and farmer, and was a resident of River all his life. Mr. Daniel is survived by his wife Angie Brown Daniel and two sons, Charles Daniel of Paintsville and Walter Daniel of Washington, DC; one daughter, Mrs. Edith Jane Chapman, Knoxville, Tenn., and 4 grandchildren. Other survivors include two sisters, Tilda Jarvis, Ashland; Sarah Eversole, Lexington; and a half sister, Jennie Young of Lexington. Funeral services were held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, July 29, in the Borders Chapel Methodist Church, with the Rev. Wayne Cox officiating. Burial was in the family cemetery under the direction of the Preston Funeral Home.

Walter E. Daniels, 64, died Friday, May 5, in Huntington VA Hospital after an extended illness. Born in Lawrence County, December 14, 1913, he was the son of Jess and Angie Brown Daniels. Mr. Daniels was a resident of River, a retired Defense supply agent for the federal government, a veteran of World War II and a member of D.A.V. Chapter 18. Surviving are his wife, Mary Novotny Daniels; a son, Charles F. Daniels of Stoutsville, OH; a brother, Charles Arden Daniels of Paintsville; a sister, Mrs. Edith Janey Chaptman of Concort, TN 2 granddaughters. Funeral services were held, Sunday, May 7, in the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Milam officiating. Graveside services were conducted by D.A.V. Chapter 18. Burial was in family cemetery at River with Jones-Preston Funeral Home handling arrangements.

JOHN GEORGE, 83, Dies March 24 Of Heart Attack
John George, 83, farmer of Ulysses, died of a heart attack at his home at 10:30am, March 24, after an illness of four years. The son of the late James and Mary Van Hoose George, he was born June 12, 1874, at Nippa. He was a well-known resident of Ulysses where he had lived for seventy-five years, and was a member of the Church of God at Lowmansville. Surviving are his wife, Stella Davis George; two sons, Charles George, Hamilton, Ohio; Johnny George, Ulysses; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Preston, Ulysses; one sister, Martha Preston, Sharplesville. Funeral services were conducted Thursday at 10:00 am from the Loss Creek schoolhouse with Scott Griffith as officiating minister. Burial was in the family cemetery.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 7 for Johnny George, 85, who died Wednesday, January 4 at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center. Mr. George was born March 19, 1909 in Lawrence County, the son of the late John and Stella Davis George. He was a farmer and member of Chestnut Grove Enterprise Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Lola Murray George; two daughters, Joyce Carol Lemaster of Paintsville and Anabelle Borders of Ulysses; and three grandchildren. Officiating at services at Preston Funeral Home Chapel was James K. Caudill. Burial was in Jess Daniel Cemetery.

Mrs. Stella George, 87, of Ulysses, KY, died Monday morning in a Paintsville hospital after an illness of two months. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 10 a.m. from the Borders Chapel with the Rev. Ellis Hamilton and Rev. Byrd Webb officiating. Burial was in the Daniels Cemetery at Ulysses. She was born December 25, 1880, a daughter of the late Joseph and Edith Borders Davis. Her husband, John George, died in 1958. Survivors include two sons, John George of Ulysses and Charles George of Hamilton, OH; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Preston of Ulysses; and a sister, Mrs. Effie David of Ulysses.
