Letter from the Editor...

Greetings!

It is with great pleasure that I have the opportunity to welcome you to the Lawrence County, Kentucky Genealogical and Historical Society and introduce you to our very first issue. This organization is primarily the "Brain child" of Lloyd L. Moore of Galloway, Ohio and Mattie, Kentucky. For several years, Lloyd and I have been talking about organizing a society to preserve the photographic images of Lawrence County's past. Our dream was to publish a quarterly which would include 35 to 40 Lawrence County photographs or images. This is our heritage. We also wanted to include the descendants of those from Lawrence County who had moved to other towns, counties, states and countries.

Friday before the September 17, 2010 Eastern Kentucky Genealogical Conference held at Paintsville, Lloyd and I met at Barry Ferguson's store at Blaine so we could travel to Cherokee to visit the Eliphas Preston Shelton Hylton Cemetery. I had previously contacted Nita Lewis of Xenia, Ohio and Alice Lauderback of Beaver, Ohio (both genealogists and attendees of the Conference) to join me in meeting with Lloyd. During the visit, Lloyd and I again discussed the possibility of preserving Lawrence County's past. In late September, Lloyd contacted me and advised that he had "taken the bull by the horns" and reserved the Community Center of Blaine for Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. to formulate plans to organize the Society. The following people showed up for the organizational meeting.

Lloyd Moore, Judge John David Preston, Marcia Salyer, Cynthia Cossin, Victoria Moore, Beverly Estep and myself (a number of people came after we adjourned). Reluctantly, I agreed to be President, prepare the corporate documents, and edit the first issue of the quarterly, Victoria Moore agreed to accept the office of Vice President, and Lloyd Moore agreed to be a Director. Subsequently, on November 27, 2010, Judge John David Preston was elected Secretary-Treasurer.

Hopefully, with a great deal of participation from our members and readers, we can produce an interesting and informative quarterly for our readers, researchers and future generations. We have a lot of work to do, so please join us in this venture by volunteering, contributing pictures and other data for the success of this Society. Each of you can make a difference...Lloyd has, and we thank him for pushing us to get started in the right direction.

Respectfully submitted,

Theodore B. Walter, Sr.
