1942-1987
Zelda--A 40 year old Zelda man was dead on arrival at Humana Hospital-Louisa, Monday evening after being found aside the road about 10 miles north of Louisa. Roy Church was pronounced dead on arrival by Lawrence County Coroner Aaron Moon. He was discovered by Debbie Hazlett, 16, about 10:30 p.m., a passing motorist on road which was abandoned when new US 23 was constructed. She told Kentucky State Police that she struck a bicycle that was parked in the road, and it became wedged in her front wheels.
About the same time another motorist, a Mr. Crites, stopped to assist and informed Ms. Hazlett that a man was lying along the roadside. He was found about 72 feet from where the vehicle struck the bicycle. Coroner Moon said the man died about 40 minutes after being struck, of internal injuries. The body was taken to Frankfort and later to Louisville for an autopsy. Mary Justice said that she was driving on the road a short time before the accident and had to swerve sharply in order not to hit the bike. She saw Mr. Church lying alongside the road, but he was moving. Coroner Moon said that money was found on Mr. Church. Det. Clyde Johns of Kentucky State Police and Trooper John Marshall investigated. KSP reported that Ms. Hazlett was unable to avoid hitting the bicycle because of an oncoming vehicle, on the rise; but on the impact the bike struck the sleeping man causing the fatal injuries. Johns said why the man was beside the bicycle is not clear. The body will be taken to Heston-Wilson Funeral Home. Big Sandy News, Aug 5, 1987
