VAN LEAR  MINER DIES
Funeral services were held Friday morning at the Freewill Baptist Church, Lowmansville, for Cort Hall who died in a local hospital following a short illness of acute nephritis. Revs. Bird Webb and Millard Van Hoose officiated, after which the body was taken to Charley, KY. where burial was made under the direction of the Jones Funeral Home with the I. O. O. F. Lodge taking charge at the grave. Mr. Hall had lived in Van Lear for several years and sometime ago had purchased a home on Georges Creek and moved his family there. However, he had continued his work at the mines and had worked up until a few days before his illness. Aged Lawrence Woman Dies Louisa, KY.
Mrs. Amanda Preston, 93, widow of the late Judge Frances Preston of the Charley section, died Tuesday noon at the home of a son, J. Preston at Charley, after a ten week's illness of complications incident to old age. Funeral rites were held from the J. Preston home at Charley Thursday morning at 10 o'clock with the Rev. Dave Al Hayes officiating and interment was made in the family cemetery near Charley. Mrs. Preston was born and reared in Martin County. She had been a member of the Freewill Baptist Church for 70 years. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Fred Wicheler, of Catlettsburg, KY., and Mrs. Lindsey Hayes, of Mechanicsburg, Ohio, and four sons, J. Mrs. Della Preston, 85, of Louisa, died Thursday, Nov. 11, in a local hospital.  Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday from the Heston Funeral Home with the Rev. Vernon Barker officiating.  Burial was in the Preston Cemetery on Route 1, Louisa.  Born Feb. 24, 1885, she was a daughter of the late Napoleon and Catherine Boyd Compton.  A member of the Belle’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, she was preceded in death y her husband Ransome Preston, in 1961. Survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Pauline Young and Mrs. Legatha Short of Louisa, Mrs. Hazel Dixon and Mrs. Gladys Condra of Fosterville, WV, Mrs. Clotine Stewart of Racine and Mrs. William Hall of Phoenix, AZ; two sons, Raymond Preston of Louisa and Elwood Preston of Printer, WV; a brother, Frederick Compton of Richardson, KY; 12 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and a great, great grandchild.

Mrs. Marie Burchett Preston, 67, died in a fire at her Louisa Route 1 home at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Her husband, Jay P. Preston, who attempted to rescue her from the flaming six-room house, was treated at a Louisa Clinic for burns. Reports indicated the fire started in the kitchen of the house when a skillet of grease caught fire. Attempts to extinguish the blaze with water only spread the flames, it was reported
The woman was trapped inside the 2-story frame house which is located on Charley Road, 12 miles south of here. Lawrence County Sheriff Charley Lemaster said the couple lived alone at the house.

Mrs. Preston, born January 8, 1899, daughter of the late J. D. Burchett, was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church for 47 years. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday (today) at 2:00 p.m. from Bell’s Chapel with the Rev. Byrd Webb and Rev. Arlie Blackburn officiating. Burial will be in the family cemetery on Route 1. Survivors, other than the husband, are five daughters, Mrs. Lloyd Pack, Pataskala, OH, Mrs. John Troutman, Dayton, OH, Mrs. Gerald Caudill, Columbus, OH, Mrs. Gallie Isaac, Jr., Louisa; and Mrs. Raymond O’Neal, Lexington, Ky; five sons, Gerald Preston, Mechanicsburg, Ohio, John B. and Eugene Stanley Preston of Columbus, Jack Preston, Waynesville, Ohio, and Don W. Preston, Dayton; 18 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers W. M. and R. B. Burchett of Virgie, KY. The body is at the Curtright Funeral Home and will be taken to the church in time for funeral services.

Ransome Preston, 84, of 209 Pocahontas St. Louisa, a retired farmer, died at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at his home after an illness of five months.  Mr. Preston was born Aug. 26, 1876, a son of the late J. F. and Amanda Spriggs Preston.  He moved from Georges Creek to Louisa seven years ago.  He was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday from Bell’s Chapel on Georges Creek with the Rev. Ira Blackburn and the Rev. Grover Bevins officiating.  Burial was in the family cemetery at Georges Creek.  Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Della Compton Preston; six daughters, Mrs. Garfield Young and Mrs. Jimmy Short of Louisa, Mrs. C.
