CHURCH, Lou Ann (Keller)

Mrs. Lou Ann Church, 84 years old, died at her home at Wilbur, Monday, January 13. Her husband, Harve Church preceded her in death six years. Mrs. Church was a former resident of Lowmansville. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday from the home and burial was made in the Nelson Cemetery, near Lowmansville. She is survived by one daughter: Mrs. Dennis Moore of Powell, OH; five sons, Pat Church of Louisa, route 1, Shilt Church of Lowmansville, Dewey Church of Berlin Heights, OH and Worth Church of Wilbur. CORDLE, Rev. Greenville

Rev. Greenville Cordle, 72, passed away at his home at Wilbur, this county, Sunday, January 12 following an illness of 4 days. He was the son of the late John and Polly Moore Cordle. Rev. Cordle had been a minister of the United Baptist Church for 53 years. He was married to Corenia Wheeler 52 years ago. Funeral services were conducted Monday evening from his home at Wilbru and burial was made in the Lon Hayes Cemetery. He is survived by his widow; one daughter, Mrs. Drew Fults of Millport, OH; fives sons, Monroe Cordle of Miami, FL, Lorenzo Cordle of Louisville, KY, Alfred Cordle of Adams, KY, Oka Cordle of Lucasville, OH and Milton Cordle of Wilbur. Charlie G. Davis, 66, 2547 Henderson Street, Ashland, a retired miner and farmer, died suddenly Wednesday of last week of a heart attack in Paintsville, KY where he had gone to visit. Mr. Davis, who had resided in Ashland for 2 1/2 years, was born March 19, 1880, in Lawrence Co., KY, a son of Amos and Rhoda Nickle Davis. He was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church, the IOOF Lodge of Paintsville, and a veteran of the Spanish-American War. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Amanda Davis; three son, Verne C. Davis, Texas; Earl Davis, Williamson, WV, and Marcus Davis, Ashland; one daughter, Miss Dorothy Davis at home; a half-brother, Thoney Johnson, Paintsville and three grandchildren. August (Hooper) Fowler, 37, 741 Winchester Avenue, died suddenly of a heart attack Monday at 10 a.m. at the home of Douglas Lewis, Louisa, KY where he was visiting. Mr. Fowler was born February 14, 1909 in Ashland, a son of Gus and Maggie Wells Fowler. Surviving are the parents; a daughter, Patsy Fowler, at home, two brothers, James Fowler, Ashland and Frank Fowler, Muncie, IN and one sister, Mrs. Lottie Miller, Portsmouth, OH. HABERLIN, Carl W.

Carl W. Haberlin, 53 years old, of Prichard, died in a Huntington hospital Thursday. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Smith Memorial Church at Prichard, conducted by the Rev. J. C. Hager, of Louisa, KY. Mr. Haberlin suffered a paralytic stroke about 5 years ago and had never completely recovered. His health had grown steadily worse in recent months. He was a veteran of World War I and an employee of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Co., working mainly on the Big Sandy division. He was the son of John B. Haberlin and the late Amanda Cooksey Haberlin of Prichard. Surviving are the father, the widow, Mrs. Emily Morrow Haberlin; six children, Mrs. Wiley Litteral of Sciotovile, OH, Miss Jean Haberlin of Huntington, J. W. Haberlin of Rittman, OH, and Carl E., Joe and Wanda Haberlin at home; four sisters, Mrs. W. H. Hurt and Mrs. Morris Lycan of Prichard, Mrs. C. E. St?? of Newport News, VA and Mrs. Borden Brinkley of Columbus and three brothers, Jack Haberlin of Prichard, Oscar Haberlin of Rittman and Bruce Haberlin with the armed forces in Germany. Mrs. Nancy Wilson Huff, 80, formerly of route 2, Prichard, WV, died Friday at her home in Rittman, OH, where she had resided for the past 5 1/2 years. Her husband, William Huff, died five years ago. Funeral services were conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at the Hopewell Church on Joel Branch near Coleman, WV. The body was removed from the Curtright Funeral Home to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ed Wellman of Prichard. Joseph Green Johnson, 74, died near Louisa, Monday. His remains were taken to Ashland for burial. Mr. Johnson was a son of the late James W. and Sarah Cordle Johnson and had resided most of his life in Ashland and Lawrence County. Surviving are the widow, the former Miss Virgie Edwards to whom he was married 50 years ago; 8 daughters, Mrs. J. N. MCCLURE, Arnoldus

1870-1947

Death came Thursday evening January 2 at the General Hospital to Arnoldus H. McClure, 76 years old, a resident of Yuma for 41 years. Born in Lawrence Co., KY in 1870, a son of the late William and Lucretia McClure, he received his education in his home state where he received his A.B, A.M. and Ph. D degrees. Mr. McClure went to Yuma, to accept the position as principal of the first grammer school, a position which he held for four years. Later he entered the real estate business and was at one time U. S. Commissioner. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Miriam H. McClure, two sons: George and Kelly of Yuma, two daughters: Miss Miriam McClure, Yuma and Mrs. Louise Rhoades, now with her husband, Lt. Col. Owen R. Rhoades, who is serving with the U.S. Army, stationed at Paris, France, and two grandchildren: Miss Helen Louisa Rhoades, with the parents in France and Owen R. Rhoades, Jr. at the University of Oregon, Portland. One brother: S. M. McClure, Huntington, WV, another brother, Bascom McClure, preceded him in death several years ago. Funeral services were held at Johnson's Chapel Saturday morning at 10 with Rev. W. Edward Epps of the First Baptist Church in charge. Burial was in the family plot in the Yuma cemetery. MOORE, Emma

Emma Moore, 88 years old passed away at a local hospital in Louisa Saturday January 4 after an illness of six days. Mrs. Moore resided at the Lawrence County Infirmary. MOORE, Greenville

Greenville Moore, 72, retired farmer died Thursday morning at the home of a son, Virgil Moore of Chadwick's Creek, Boyd County, after an illness of the past week. Mr. Moore, a son of the late John C. and Martha Castle Moore, was a  native of Lawrence County, KY and resided here the greater part of his life, moving to Boyd County to reside with his son about 2 years ago. Surviving are two sons, Virgil and J. H. Moore, both of the Chadwick's Creek section, four daughters, Mrs. Con Rice of Bolt's Fork, Mrs. Roscoe Boggs of Rush, Mrs. Maywood Humble of Buchanan, and Mrs. Oscar Hess of Jewell Valley, VA, three brothers, John C. of Princess, Lindsey of Yatesville and James of Fallsburg; and two sisters, Mrs. Virginia Christian of Morgan's Creek, KY and Mrs. Mary Frazier of Zelda, KY, 18 grandchildren. MURPHY, Lindsey

Funeral services for Lindsey Murphy, 76, native of Lawrence Co., KY whose death occurred Thursday night at his home near the residence of Den Queen on Trace Creek, Boyd County, were held Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Ernest Chaffin of Seed Tick, Lawrence county, with burial following in the family cemetery. Rev. David Hewlett officiated. Mr. Murphy was a son of the late Arch and Susie Ratliff Murphy. He had been a resident of Boyd County the greater part of his life. Surviving are a son, Oliver Murphy of Richwood, WV, two daughters, Mrs. Chaffin of Lawrence County and Mrs. Frazier Nunley of Huntington, WV and two brothers, Harmon Murphy of Huntington and John Murphy of Hitchens, KY. Charles Newcomb, 63, a farmer of the Tabor Creek section of Wayne County, WV, who died at his home Monday, January 13, after an illness of two years, was laid to rest Wednesday, January 13. The funeral was conducted from the home, with the Rev. Roy Bellomy of Prichard WV officiating. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery, Fort Gay. A son of the late Abraham and Sarah Meade Newcomb, he was born in Lawrence County, KY. Surviving are six daughters: Mrs. Noah Wellman, Huntington, Mrs. Joe Vickers, Rittman, OH, Mrs. John Lester, Mrs. Robert Dean, Mrs. Raymond Borders and Mrs. James Lemaster, all of Fort Gay, WV; one son, Frank Newcomb, Huntington and one sister, Mrs. Myra Pack of route 1, Wayne, WV. Mrs. Della N. O'Neal, 52, wife of Arzetus O'Neal, died at 1 a.m. Friday at her home, in Ashland following an illness of two months. She was born in Paintsville, KY, August 30, 1894, a daughter of John Wesley Nelson and Caldona Martin Nelson, who now reside at West Van Lear, KY; Surviving are the husband, the parents; two sons, Clem Wesley O'Neal of Ashland and Ralph J. O'Neal at home; two daughters, Mrs. Leslie a. Baker, Ashland and Miss Dorothy O'Neal at home; six brothers, Ernest and George B. Nelson, Louisa, KY, Earl and Charles W. Nelson, Paintsville, John Jr., and Joe Stanley Nelson, West Van Lear; two sisters, Mrs. Fred Remmelle of Louisa and Mrs. Sammie Stapleton of Akron, OH; a grandson, Danny Wesley O'Neal of Ashland.  Robert Rayburn, a resident of Queen Creek, Wayne County, WV, died Wednesday night at 9:30 at the home of his son, Fred Rayburn, Huntington, WV. He was a son of the late Joseph and Isabella Sweeney Rayburn and had been a member of the Methodist Church for 58 years. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Hurricane Baptist Church with the Rev. Audrey Lester officiating. Burial was made in the Christian Cemetery. The body was removed from the Curtright Funeral Home to the son's residence in Huntington, Friday afternoon. Major Mart See, 67, of Denver, CO, formerly of Louisa, died in the Veterans Hospital in Denver, Thursday, January 2nd, following an illness of several months. The body will arrive in Louisa about January 10th, and will be accompanied by his daughter, Miss Mildfred See and his niece, Miss Lois Mae Mohler, of Los Angeles, CA. Funeral services will be at the Curtright Funeral Home, with burial in the family cemetery at Lick Creek. Born in Lawrence County, Mr. See was a son of the late John and Amanda (Puss) Miller See. His wife, Laura (Babe) Isaacs See, preceded him in death two years ago.  Mrs. Allie Shepherd, 81, widow of John Shephard, died Friday morning at 6:30 at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Strother Wellman of 323 Tenth St., Catlettsburg. Death followed a brief illness. Mrs. Shepherd was born in Lawrence County, KY, a daughter of the late John and Bethania White Fannin, early resident of Boyd County. She had been a resident of Catlettsburg for the past 22 years and was a member of the West Catlettsburg Methodist Church and of the Woman's Society of Christian Service. Surviving are a son by her first marriage, Ike Lawson of Detroit, MI, a step son, James Shepherd of Rush, KY; three daughters, Mrs. Fred Michaels of Rush, KY, Mrs. Bert McCann of Ashland and Mrs. Strother Wellman of Catlettsburg, two step daughters, Mrs. Jake Fannin of Pedro, OH and Mrs. Brina Jones of South Webster, OH, a brother, John Fannin of route 4, Louisa, KY, and two sisters, Mrs. D. Mrs. Alice Stratton, 44, of Van Lear, died Sunday afternoon of last week at a Huntington, WV hospital where she had gone Saturday for treatment and an operation. The body was returned here and funeral services were held at the Buchanan Chapel at Zelda Wednesday afternoon. Interment was in charge of the Jones Funeral Home of Paintsville. Asbury B. Thomas, 73 years old, of Adams, KY died Friday evening January 24 in a Lexington hospital. He was the husband of the late Mrs. May McKinster Thompson, who died in 1939. Mr. Thompson was a retired farmer and merchant of Mattie, KY. He had been a member of the Methodist Church for 40 years. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning January 28 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. S. V. Ball and Rev. William Burgess officiating. Burial was made in the McKinster Cemetery near Mattie. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Victoria Highburger of Rock Creek, OH and Mrs. Louanna Moore of Adams, KY; four brothers, A. H. Thompson, Bletton, IN, J. N. She was a daughter of the late Henry and Hariett Ferguson Moore. Funeral services will be conducted at the African Methodist Church, Sunday at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. J. C. Hager, pastor of the Louisa Baptist Church and Rev. Cecil Hill, Pastor of the African Methodist Church of Louisa and Huntington in charge. She is survived by one daughter, Emogene Wallace Burgess, two sons, Austin Wallace, West Brentwood, NY and Stanley (Mose) Wallace, Louisa; two sisters, Mrs. Virginia Griffith, Williamson, WV and Mrs. Birdie Scott of Wartogo, WV; two brothers, Fred Moore, Williamson and Johnnie Moore, Fort Gay, WV. Mrs. Martha Adkins Yates, 81 years old passed away Thursday morning, January 2 at 8 a.m. in a local hospital after an illness of two weeks. Mrs. Yates was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Adkins of Yatesville. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday 10 a.m. at the Savage Memorial Church at Fallsburg, with the Rev. Neff of Inez, formerly of Louisa, officiating. Burial will be made in the family cemetery at Fallsburg. Mrs. Yates, whose husband, John W. Yates, died in 1930, is survived by two half-sisters, Mrs. James Bradley, Yatesville and Mrs. Maybelle Littlefield, Charleston, WV and one half-brother, Andrew Adkins of Yatesville. Mrs. Hattie Robinson Alexander, 65, widow of H. A. Alexander died February 15 at the home of her sister, Mrs. D. V. Kibbey, in Grayson, following a long illness. Mrs. Alexander was born in Carter County, near Willard, May 4, 1881. She was married March 20, 1926, to Andy Alexander, who preceded her in death 9 years ago. CHAFFIN, Hubert M.

Hubert M. , 43 years old, of Grayson, KY, formerly of Louisa, died suddenly in a hospital in Huntington at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday morning of a heart attack. Son of Mrs. Emmaline Carter Chaffin and the late Bill Jim Chaffin of Louisa, he was married to Miss Mary Lewis Stovall, daughter of Dr. Stovall of Grayson, 16 years ago. Mr. Chaffin was a veteran of World War II, having served with the United States Navy. He was a member of the Willie C. Lewis American Legion Post, Trimble Lodge F and AM; and the Rotary Club of Grayson. He graduated from the Louisa High School and attended the University of Kentucky. He was a member of the Louisa Methodist Church of Grayson for 15 years. Mr. Chaffin was a licensed embalmer and funeral director and had been the Sanitary Inspector of Carter County for 14 years. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. from the ?Basby Memorial Methodist Church with the Rev. G. W. Townsend and the Rev. L. M. Rogers of Louisa, officiating. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary S. Chaffin of Grayson; his mother, Mrs. B. J. Chaffin of Louisa, one sister, Mrs. John W. McNabb of Louisa and two nephews, Bill Jim and John McNabb of Louisa. Rev. Reuben M. Curnutte, 93 years old, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Austin of Fallsburg, Thursday afternoon. He was the son of the late Reuben and Zylphia Holbrook Curnutte. Rev. Curnutte had been a minister of the Baptist Church for 35 years. Funeral services were conducted from the Savage Memorial Church at Fallsburg, Sunday morning, February 16, with the Rev. Dave Hewlette officiating. Burial was made in the family cemetery. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. John Austin of Fallsburg and Mrs. T. W. Mrs. Anise Salter Haws, 58, of Rose Hill, VA, died at her home Thursday, February 20th, at 8:10 a.. after a long illness. She was born February 16, 1889 near Louisa, the daughter of the late Harve and Adeline Short Salters. She was married to John Logan Haws on July 7th, 1907. Funeral services were held at the Rose Hill Methodist Church, Saturday, February 22 at 1:30 p.m. Interment was made in the Rose Hill Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, three sons, Clarence Elmer Haws of Columbus, OH, Charles N. Haws of Rose Hill, Drew W. John Lester Jordan, 70, 1577 Cora Street, Springfield, OH, well-known in Ashland and the tri-state, died last Saturday at his home. He went to Springfield from Ashland three years ago. He was a former employee of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad in Ashland. Mr. Jordan was born April 28, 1876 in Lawrence County, KY, the son of Richard and Angeline Jordan. He was a member of the Blessed Hope Baptist Church of Springfield. Surviving are his widow, Myrtle, 1 son, Herndon of Springfield, two daughters, Mrs. Stewart Carter, Detroit, and Miss Wilma J. Burns received over the week end at her home proved fatal in the Williamson hospital to a 19 year old mother of Canada, Pike County. Mrs. Emogene Murray Reed, wife of Joe Reed of Canada died at 4 p.m. Saturday of burns received six hours earlier when her housecoat caught fire as she passed the fireplace in her home. Mrs. Reed, who was born March 1, 1927 at Kenova, was a daughter of Homer Murray and Sally Stumbo Murray. Besides her husband and parents, she leaves one daughter, Norma Sue; three brothers, Escom Murray of Garrett, KY, Leonard Murray of Hazard, KY and Clifford Murray of Louisa, KY and three sisters, Mrs. Fred Blackburn of Meta and Misses Evelyn and Betty Murray of Louisa. Following a year's illness, Nicholas Ray Waldeck, 40 years old, died at his home Thursday, February 27 at Portsmouth, OH. He was the son of John and Dorie Spears Waldeck formerly of Louisa. He was a veteran of World War I. Funeral services were conducted from the Emrick Funeral Home with the Rev. W. M. Hart officiating and burial was made in the Memorial Park Cemetery. YOUNG, Richard

Richard Young, 51, a resident of Nolan, WV, and an employee of the Pond Creek Colliery Co., died Monday morning in the Williamson hospital of injuries sustained early Saturday morning when the automobile in which he was riding, plunged over an embankment at Borderland. Mr. Young had been in critical condition since the accident, in which his son, Robert, 21, was only slightly injured. He received a severe head injury and a fracture of the right thigh. Mr. Young was born in Martin County, a son of Kenis and Ella Zeek Young who now reside at Fort Gay, WV. He was a member of the Church of God. Mrs. Mary Elizabeth York Bromley, 72 years old, wife of Dr. A.W. Bromley, passed away Thursday morning, in a local hospital following an illness of 7 years. Born at Glenhayes, WV, the daughter of the late Dr. L. S. and Permelia Georgia Allison York. They had been married for 57 years. Mrs. Bromley had resided in Louisa for the past 49 years and had been a member of the Louisa Methodist Church since girlhood. The body will lie in state at the Curtright Funeral Home from which the funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. L. M. Rogers and Rev. J. C. Hager officiating. Rev. R. H. Cassady, of route 4, Louisa, three miles below Fallsburg, died early Tuesday morning at his home after an illness of one year. Mrs. Amanda Phoebe Darnell Rittenberry, 86, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Hardwick, route 2, Louisa, Thursday night. The body of Mrs. Rittenberry whose husband, John Rittenberry preceded her in death 36 years ago, was removed from the Curtright Funeral Home to the daughter's residence Friday afternoon. Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Hardwick home with burial following in the Hardwick Cemetery. SHANNON, Dr. Frederick F.

1877-1947

Dr. Frederick F. Shannon, 70 years old, who was one of the greatest preachers of the world and one of Louisa best loved citizens, died at his home in Chicago, IL Monday at 8:50 p.m. after an illness of two weeks. Son of the late James W. Shannon and Kate P. Sullivan Shannon of Louisa. Dr. Shannon was born February 11, 1877 at Council Grove, Morris County, Kansas. His parents, moved to Lawrence County, KY when he was six weeks old. He attended the Louisa school and in 1889 an advertisement appeared in the Big Sandy News as follows: Boy wanted to learn the printing trade. Apply at this office. The successful applicant was Fred Shannon, age 12 years, whose home was one mile outside of town. He lived with his grandmother, Mrs. Christian Sullivan, while working at the News office.

He was told to report the next Monday morning for initiation into the duties of "devil" in a country printing office. At five a.m. that morning he was sitting on the step impatiently awaiting the hour for the doors to open; which was 7 a.m. He began by sorting "pi". Dr. Shannon worked for nearly 8 years for the Big Sandy News. At the age of 18 he was converted in a revival meeting at the First Methodist Church in Louisa and his 20th years he secured a position as a printer in a Southern Methodist Publishing House at Nashville, TN, as part of his plan to attend school. Graduating from Harvard University, he was ordained as a Southern Methodist minister and his first charge was Logan, WV. He spent two years in this conference.

Dr. Shannon and his wife, the former Effie Grace Meyers of York, PA, whom he married in 1903, spent in Europe and the Holy Land and upon his return he was called as pastor of the Grace M. E. Church of Brooklyn, NY, where he served from 1904 to 1912. He served as minister of the Reformed Church in the same city from 1912 to 1919 and from 1920 until 1941 at the Central Church in Chicago. He resigned in 1941 to write, becoming the author of 21 books the latest of these "The Christ of God". Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Effie Meyers Shannon; one son, Frederick Shannon, Chicago; one brother, Ernest E. Shannon, Louisa, three sisters, Misses Elizabeth and Ruth Shannon and Mrs. Quinn McClure, all of Louisa. Funeral services were conducted from the Second Presbyterian Church in Chicago, Tuesday at 1 p.m. with Dr. Clyde Howard, pastor, officiating. The body was taken to York, PA for burial. Mrs. Easter Fields Stepp, 78, whose parents were among the first settlers in the Kermit section, died March 31, at her home at Kermit. She had been ill the past four weeks of pneumonia. Mrs. Stepp was the widow of Harrison Stepp, N & W Railway employee, who preceded her in death three years ago. She was born July 23, 1868, in Lawrence County, KY, a daughter of the late Reuben and Matilda Porter Fields. She was about 15 years of age when her family moved from Lawrence County to Kermit in the 1880's. She was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church and widely known in the lower section of Mingo County. VAUGHAN, Dr. C. M.

Dr. C. M. Vaughan, 63, died Thursday at his residence, 252 Huston Ave., Paris, KY. Dr. Vaughan was a son of John L. and Virginia Wilson Vaughan. He was a graduate of the Kentucky School of Medicine, Louisville, and took his postgraduate work at the Chicago Medical School. He was a member of the Baptist Church of Paris where he taught the Bible Class. He was a member of the Bourbon Medical Society, American Medical Association, and was on the staff of the Massie Memorial Hospital, Paris. He was a member of Bourbon Post No. 30, American Legion and a veteran of World War I. He had lived in Paris for the last five years. Preceding that time he practiced medicine in Harrisonburg, KY. The body arrived in Ashland Saturday afternoon and was taken to the John Steen Funeral Home where funeral services were held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. John G. Whitt officiating. Before coming to Ashland he lived at Willard, KY. He was a member of the First Christian Church, a past master of the Masonic Lodge at Willard and a member of the Maysville Commandery No. 18, Knights Templar. Millard Berry, 47 years old, died suddenly Tuesday evening following a heart attack at his home near Yatesville, KY. son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Berry, he was a veteran of World War I. BURTON, David A.

David A. Burton, 49, of Mansfield, OH, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Burton of Huntington died in a Mansfield hospital Sunday. The body was taken to Huntington Wednesday for funeral services and burial was Thursday in the Harmon Cemetery near Louisa, KY. Dr. R. C. Cooer, 73, died at his home in Richmond, Monday. He was a native of Lee County and practiced here many years ago. He has been prominent in Kentucky medical circles since 1903. Robert M. Dean, 85, well-known former resident of Deering, Lawrence County, OH died Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. Earl Pratt of 306 South Fifth Street, Ironton. Mr. Dean, a native of Lawrence County, KY, near Louisa, had lived with his daughter for the past two years, and had been an invalid for 8 years. He was born February 27, 1862, a son of the late Judge James R. and Mrs. Emily Walters Dean, and was married October 17, 1905 to Miss Clarissa Moore. They moved to Ohio in 1921 and established their home near Deering. Surviving are three children, Mrs. Lafe Pratt and Shannon Dean, both of Ironton, one step-daughters, Mrs. Sam Derifield of Deering, a nephew, Jack Gartin, one brother, Stanton Dean of Simmons, MO, and one sister, Mrs. J. 1. F. Fields, 86, a retired farmer and merchant of Moree, Martin County, died Monday of last week at the home of a son, H. A. Fields of Beauty, KY. Mr. Fields was born in March 1861, a son of the late Preacher Billy Fields and Annie Bond Fields of Louisa, KY. He was a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church. James W. Hicks, 56, a retired merchant, of Martha, KY, died Sunday at 10 a.m. in the Veterans Hospital at Huntington, WV following an illness of four months. Mr. Hicks, a veteran of World War I, was born at Spann, KY, and came to the Blaine oil fields as superintendent in 1920, later entering the merchandising business, from which he retired one year ago. He had resided at Martha for 27 years. He was a member of Apperson Lodge No. 195, R.A.M. and the W O. Johnson Post No., 89 of American Legions. Four persons shot to death near Fort Gay, WV, May 3, were buried Thursday of last week in Dean Cemetery in Wayne county while 400 relatives and neighbors looked on. A Baptist preacher, 78 years old Rev. William (Uncle Billy) Carroll conducted funeral services in the Tabor's Creek Baptist Church near Fort Gay for Mrs. Oliver Hurley, wife of the man named as the slayer; her 3 year old son, Jay; Mrs. Nora Belle Skeens, Mrs. Hurley's sister, and Mrs. Skeens' 18 months old son, Lawrence. Oliver Hurley, names as the killer by a coroner's jury, and his brother, William, whom he was charged with having killed, were buried in a double grave Wednesday. Rev. Carroll speaking to those who attended the services, many of whom contributed to the funeral costs in a free-will offering, pleaded with the congregation to forgive Hurley. "We must say, as Christ said, "Forgive them, for they know not what they do.' We must be willing to follow Christ all the way." he added.

William Albert Lyon, 72, 3024 Central Avenue, Ashland, former groceryman, died at his home at 12:30 a.m. Monday following a short illness. Mr. Lyon, a resident of Ashland for 27 years, was born in Lawrence County, KY, March 25, 1875, a son of Colba and Phoebe Jane Lyon. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the United Baptist Church in Whitehouse, KY, with the Rev. Alonzo Wright officiating. Burial was made in the family cemetery. MCKENZIE, Oakley

Funeral services were conducted Monday and Tuesday for the two victims who were burned to death Sunday morning about 2 a.m. when the McKenzie home caught on fire at Martha, KY. William Sparks, Jimmie Sparks, Everett Sparks and Oakley McKenzie had attended church in Elliott County and had returned to the home of Oakley McKenzie, which is just about 100 yards from the Elliott County line. Fire broke out in the house about 2 a.m. Sunday morning. Everett Sparks and Jimmie Sparks escaped. They tried to get one of the other boys out but the  flames were so intense that they were unable to get back into the house. Lowell Edwards, Justice of the Peace, of Blaine, held the inquest. Funeral services were conducted Monday morning at 10:30 a.m. for William Sparks, Jr., son of Rev. William and Bertha Barker Sparks form the home of his parents with Rev. G. W. Sparks officiating and burial was made in the Barker Cemetery. Mrs. Della McCoy Simpkins, about 65, who had made her home the past 12 years with a brother, Sailor McCoy of Matewan, died Sunday morning at 10:15 a.. in the Matewan clinic. She suffered a stroke Friday night and was admitted to the hospital on the following morning. Mrs. Simpkins, whose husband, Elwood Simpkins, died several years ago, was a daughter of the late William Anderson and Sarah McCoy Anderson. She had resided in the Matewan section most of her life time. She spent several years in Louisa, KY where she became a member of the Baptist Church. John Lee Steele, 13 months old son of Paul and Lolene Rogers Steele of Houckville, KY, was killed instantly Wednesday morning when his grandfather, Forrest Rogers, backed over him with a truck. Mrs. Elizabeth Coomer Thorpe, 81 died at her home near Canyon Falls, Thursday, May 1. Funeral services were held at the home of her son, John Thorpe, Saturday, by the Rev. Roy Adams. Mrs. Thorpe was a daughter of the late Jack and Eliza Coomer and was born June 20, 1866. In 1883, she was married to Jackson Thorpe, who died in 1940. She was a member of the Methodist Church. BANFIELD, Virginia (VanHoose)

Injuries received in an automobile accident Sunday afternoon were fatal to Mrs. Virginia Banfield, 34, of 166 East Second Avenue, Williamson, WV. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Perry VanHoose of Louisa. The accident occurred on the Brushey Fork road of Big Creek at Varney, KY. Mrs. Banfield, wife of Everett Banfield, a Pond Creek colliery employee, was driving an automobile belonging to Steve Doka of New Camp, Pike County, Doka was treated at a hospital in Williamson for contusions of the head and arm. Mrs. Banfield suffered internal injuries and died at a Williamson hospital a short time after she was received for treatment. An investigation of the accident by the Kentucky state highway patrol revealed that the automobile left the narrow gravel road and overturned four time down the mountainside. The mishap occurred near the home of Emmett Case of Varney and the injured were taken to the hospital by Case and a neighbor. Mrs. Banfield is survived by her husband, her parents, four brothers, Ed VanHoose of New Camp, Charles V. and Leon VanHoose of Louisa, and Walter V. VanHoose of Walen; four sisters, Mrs. Grace Bellomy and Mrs. Otis Webb of Fort Gay and lassie and Billie Jo VanHoose of Louisa. Fred Picklesimer, 83, former resident of Louisa for 44 years before moving to Ray, OH 20 years ago, died Friday, May 30th, at the home of a daughter, Mrs. John Petry, of Ashland, following an illness of 7 years. The son of the late John and Catherine Bayes Picklesimer, he had been at the home of Mrs. Petry for six months. His first wife, Mary Holley Picklesimer, died in 1923, and in 1926, he married Miss Hallie Pack. Mr. Picklesimer was a member of the Methodist Church at Busseyville, KY for several years. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 2:30 p.m. from the Freewill Baptist Church in Louisa with the Rev. William W. Moore officiating. Burial was made in the Pine Hill Cemetery under the direction of the Curtright Funeral Home. He is survived by his widow; five daughters, Mrs. Petry, Mrs. Taylor Billups of Fort Gay, WV, Mrs. O. B. Helton of Ashland, Mrs. L. D. Jones of Ironton, OH, Mrs. Clyde Curnutte of Louisa; one son, C. E. Picklesimer of Ashland, 13 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. REDWINE, Talmadge B.

Talmadge B. Redwine, 54, Sandy Hook merchant and candidate for the Democratic nomination for State Representative in Lawrence and Elliott county district, died Tuesday, June 17. Funeral services were held Thursday morning at the Sandy Hook Methodist Church with the pastor, Rev. Charles Vansant, officiating. Mr. Redwine was a son of Mrs. Belle Greene Redwine and the late Matthew M. Redwine. He was a member of the Methodist Church and of the Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his mother; his wife, Mrs. Faye Greene Redwine; three sons, John, Carl and Curtis Redwine and a brother, Virgil Redwine of Sandy Hook. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. SAMMONS, Emma (Maynard)

Mrs. Emma Maynard Sammons, 78, well-known resident of Clifford died Friday evening, June 6, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hobart Bush of 3428 Greenup Avenue, Ashland. She had been residing at the Bush home for the past three weeks. Mrs. Sammons' first husband, Lark Maynard, died 41 yeas ago, and her second husband, Londsey Sammons, died 20 years ago. She was a member of the United Baptist Church for over 50 years. Funeral services were conducted Monday at 2 p.m. from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Curtis Griffith, of Clifford, with the Rev. Nelson Hughes officiating. Burial was made in the Maynard Cemetery under the direction of the Curtright Funeral Home. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Bush and Mrs. Griffith; two sons, Taylor Maynard and Clifford Sammons; one sister, Miss Narie Frazier of Clifford; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mrs. Ruth Ellen Scott, 81, of Fort Gay, died Tuesday at 1 p.m. at her home after an illness of five years. She was the daughter of the late Wesley and Mattie York Childers, and was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. She is survived by the husband, Cain Scott; three daughters, Mrs. S. G. Bryant, of Sciotoville, OH, and Mrs. Mattie Billups and Mrs. Lace Workman of Fort Gay; and four sons, Edward Chapman of Fort Gay, Carmel Chapman of Williamson and Archie Chapman of Lenore, WV. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 27, at the Methodist Church in Fort Gay, the Rev. Scraggs and the Rev. J. C. Hager officiating. Dr. William Edison Sparks, 73, Sandy Hook, Elliott County, KY died Saturday night at the home of a son, Will Ed Sparks, Bruin, KY following an illness of four weeks. Dr. Sparks was graduated from the Louisville Medical College in 1907 and was a practicing physician for 40 years, three years of which he spent in Grayson, He was born May 16, 1874 at Martha, this county, a son of the late Dr. Levi and Mary Gambill Sparks. He was married to Tabitha Moore of Blaine, KY and to this union were born three children, Oscar, Mary and Will Ed. A veteran of the Spanish-American War, Dr. Sparks was a member of the Sandy Hook Methodist Church and the state medical association. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Daisy Sparks, one son, Will Ed Sparks, a daughter, Mrs. Mary McGrannahan, Paducah, KY, one brother, Dr. M. L. Sparks, Bloomington, NB and sic grandchildren. Hiram Wellman, 72, a retired employee of the Norfolk & Western Railway Co., died suddenly Saturday morning at his home in Fort Gay, WV. A life-time resident of Fort Gay, Mr. Wellman was a son of the late John and Caroline Crabtree Wellman. Funeral services were conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at the Baptist Church at Fort Gay. Burial was made in the Fairview Cemetery. Mrs. Emma Jane Wilson, 76, died Monday at 6 p.m. at her home on Pea Ridge Road, near Huntington. She was a life-long member of the Pea Ridge Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Charles E. Wilson; two sons, Earl F. Wilson and Charles E. Wilson, Jr., of Huntington, route 2; three daughters, Mrs. Cline Doss and Mrs. Henry Grady of Huntington, route 2 and Mrs. C. D. Whitling of Huntington; four sisters, Mrs. R. D. Rucker of Milton, Mrs. Wayne Dean and Mrs. Floyd Pelfrey of Wayne and Mrs. Robert Rowe of Fort Gay; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Herbert Young, 46, 309 Perry Street, Louisa, a veteran of World War I, died Thursday, June 5, in the Veteran's Hospital at Huntington, following an illness of one month. Mr. Young was born and reared in Louisa where he spent most of his life. He was the son of A. B. and the late Rebecca Isaac Young of Kenova, WV. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 3:30 p.m. from the Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. W. W. Moore and Rev. J. C. Hager officiating. Andrew Adkins, 73, died at 10:45 a.m. last Friday at his home in Yatesville after an illness of eight weeks. He was a prominent farmer in this area and a lifelong resident of Yatesville. He was a son of William and Louverne Adkins. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Rachel Marcum Adkins; five daughters, Mrs. Jay Fitch, Ft. Clinton, OH, Mrs. C. W. AKERS, Robert A.

Robert A. Akers, 65 years old of Oliver Springs, TN, where he had resided during the past four years, died in a hospital in Sparta, TN, Sunday following an automobile accident Friday, July 25. Born in Louisa, the son of the late John and Mary Jane Greek Akers, he married to Mary Elizabeth See, who died in 1916. Mr. Akers was a carpenter and contractor. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the IOOF. The body arrived in Louisa Monday afternoon and was taken to the Curtright Funeral Home where the funeral was conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. Rev. L. M. Rogers officiated and burial was made in the Shannon Cemetery on Lick Creek. He is survived by four daughters, Miss Louise Akers of Cleveland, OH, Mrs. John H. Neff of Woodsdale, WV, Mrs. John D. John Wesley Allen, 59, a retired C & O clerk and farmer of Georges Creek died at his home Friday morning after a brief illness. Mr. Allen, a son of the late Alex and Elizabeth Stephen Allen, was a native of Floyd county. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Masonic and Odd Fellows Lodges. George Burgess, colored, an employee in the car cleaning department of the Norfolk and Western Railway Company, died Thursday at his home on West Third Avenue in Williamson, WV. Born June 21, 1883 at Lawrence County, KY, he was a son of William and Martha Burgess and the husband of Birdie Reed, of Louisa, who preceded him in death. He had resided in Williamson for 43 years. He is survived by two sons, Robert and George Francis Burgess of Louisa, a brother Will Burgess, Louisa; three sisters, Laura Polley, Louisa, Fannie Loer, Fort Gay and Emma Kibby, Ashland. Mrs. Mona Lee Thompson Butler, 23 years old, died in a Columbus, OH hospital Monday evening at 6:15 p.m. after an illness of five days. She was the wife of William Butler and daughter of Mrs. Margaret Ellen Butler and the late John J. Butler of Busseyville, KY. The body was returned to the Young Funeral Home Tuesday and then removed to the home of her mother in Busseyville. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. from the Carter Chapel with the Rev. Arlie Blackburn and the Rev. William W. Moore officiating. Burial was made in the Carter Chapel Cemetery. Mary Lena Crabtree, 27, a daughter of N. T. Crabtree of Fort Gay and the late Elizabeth Boyd Crabtree, died at 7 a.m. Monday in a Huntington hospital. She was a member of the Baptist Church for 15 years. Surviving are her father, four sisters, Mrs. Arthur Lukas of Williamson, Mrs. Jeff Varney of Detroit, Mrs. Newton Lambert of Road Fork, KY, and Miss Lorraine Crabtree of Fort Gay and two brothers, Goble Crabtree of Fort Gay and Woodrow Crabtree of Road Fork. FUGETT, Joe

Joe Fugett, 49, former resident of Louisa, was killed instantly Sunday afternoon, June 29, near Sheridan, WY, when the car in which he was riding struck loose gravel and overturned on a curve. The other occupant of the car, Earl Winston, Fugett's 17 years old son, escaped, with minor bruises. Fugett, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James W. Fugitt, was born at Blaine and had resided in this county most of his life. He was a member of the W. O. Johnson Post American Legion and a veteran of World Wars I and II. Funeral services were held at Sheridan Wednesday, July 2. HAWS, Hezekiah

Dr. Hezekiah Haws, 74, of Freeburn and a former resident of Lawrence County, was killed last Thursday when his jeep collided with a train near Matewan, WV. Dr. Haws was a native of Warfield, KY, and was associated with a Matewan Clinic for several years. Dr. O. P. Hodge, an associate in the clinic said the victim was partly deaf and apparently did not hear the approaching train. He was a graduate of the University of Louisville School of Medicine and had practiced in Warfield, Inez and Stone. At the time of his death he was a physician for the Emperor Coal Company at Freeburn. He is survived by his wife and one daughter. HURLEY, Everett

Everett Hurley, 32, Prichard, WV, died at the veterans hospital in Huntington Monday at 1 p.m. from injuries received after being struck by a train at Hubbardstown, WV on July 18. He was a son of Mrs. Minnie Ellis Hurley, Hubbardstown and the late John Hurley. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Bellomy Chapel at Hubbardstown, conducted by the Rev. Jim Harvey. Interment was in the Ellis Cemetery. The body was removed from Curtright Funeral Home Tuesday morning to the home of Mrs. Hurley. KIRK, Walter Cain

Walter Cain Kirk, 65 years old of Ashland, KY, formerly of Louisa, died in an Ashland Hospital Friday, July 18, following a stroke Sunday. Mr. Kirk lived 29 years in Charleston, WV before moving to Ashland a year ago. He was a plumbing contractor and inspector of Charleston for a number of years. He was born at Inez, the son of John L. and Alice M. Cain Kirk. The body was removed from the Curtright Funeral Home Saturday to the home of his sister, Mrs. George W. Hale of Kermit, WV. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 2:30 from the Methodist church in Inez, with burial in the Kirk Cemetery. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lenora Mae Copley Kirk; one daughter, Mrs. Elex Larmon of South Charleston, WV; one sister, Mrs. George W. Hale of Kermit, WV, four brothers, E. W. SALYERS, Lowell Franklin

1937-1947

Lowell Franklin Salyers, 10, a son of Mrs. Zella G. Salyers of Adams and the late Jay Salyers, was decapitated in an auto-truck collision on the Blaine road Monday evening between 6:30 and 7 p.m. The accident occurred in front of Morgan Wheeler's house near Adams. The car was driven by Willard Salyers, 18, and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Salyers, Lowell and Frances Salyers. Mrs. Salyers and Frances received minor cuts and abrasions in the collision. Only occupant of the truck was Emmett Norris. At the coroner's inquest which was held Tuesday morning at 10:30 both witnesses and occupants of the auto testified that neither vehicle was traveling at excessive speed, but that the car and truck collided before either driver could act to avert the accident. Dr. Henry S. Young, county coroner, conducted the inquiry.

The edge of the left side of the truck bed penetrated the side of the car eleven inches beginning at the windshield, striking young Salyers who was sitting in the rear on the left side. The accident occurred on a curve and an investigation by Sheriff Proctor Fyffe established that the truck was on its side of the road. The child, a fourth grade student, is survived by his mother; two sisters, Marie and Frances and a brother, Charles, and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Salyers. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Low Gap Church on Brushey with the Rev. Arthur Morse and the Rev. Emerson Collier officiating. Big Sandy News, July 4, 1947

Mrs. Emma Smith Slone, 51 years old, Louisa, route 2, on Donithan Creek, died at her home Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. She was born near Williamson, WV and had resided at Louisa route 2 for the past 4 years. 1. C. Swetnam, 78, of Wilbur, KY, passed away in a Louisa hospital Sunday afternoon following an illness of 27 days. He was the son of M. F. and Lyda Ann Bitner Swetnam. He was a retired farmer and a merchant of Wilbur for 62 years and a very prominent citizen in Lawrence County. He was a member of the Christian Church for a number of years and a charter member of the Jake Rice Lodge at Blaine, KY, and the Louisa chapter of the F & AM. Heanon Triplett, 74, Webbville, route 1, died at 10 p.m. Monday night in a local hospital. He was a son of Franklin and Rosie Sparks Triplett. WALTER, Luther M.

Luther M. Walter, 70, a nationally known attorney and former Lawrence county school teacher, died in his home in Chicago, IL Monday night, June 30. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ann Patrick Walter of Blaine. He was a graduate of the University of Kentucky and Valparaiso College at Valparaiso, IN and had received several high honorary degrees in law from other universities in recognition of his services in the national government. Mr. Walter was called the father of the Interstate Commerce Commission, having served a number of years as a commissioner. He served as a legal adviser to President Theodore Roosevelt in Washington and became an expert in interstate commerce affairs.

He left the commission to begin private practice as a commerce specialist and at the time of his death he was the senior partner of Walter, Buchmore and Collins Law Firm of Chicago. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Helen W. Munsent, an attorney in Chicago, a son, Paul B. Walter, an attorney in Washington, D.C., two brothers, R. F. and A. H. Walter, both lawyers in Washington, D.C., three sister, Lina, widow of Dr. D. J. Thompson of Webbville, Amanda, widow of dr. C. L. Thompson of Wilmore, KY and Pearl the wife of Dr. B. H. CORDLE, Earl Edwin

A one day illness of poliomyelitis claimed the life of 8 years old Earl Edwin Cordle, of Adams. He died at 12:15 Friday afternoon in a local hospital. A few days prior to the child's death a report had been issued by the State Board of Health that infantile-paralysis cases in  Kentucky have dropped sharply this year. His was the 15th case of polio reported in the state this year in comparison with 52 cases at a corresponding period last year. There were 12 polio deaths in the state last year, but this is the first fatality reported this year. This was the first case of polio in Lawrence County in three years, the second case in five years, Elm Grove School, where the child was a pupil was closed for two weeks as a precautionary step to combat a possible spread of polio, County Health department officials said. Private funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Cordle family cemetery with the Young Funeral Home in charge. Members of the immediate family have been place under quarantine. Eli Hatcher, 63 years old, passed away at his home in Fort Gay Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. where he had lived for one year, prior to this he lived 13 years at Kermit, WV. Born near Fort Gay the son of the late Edmond and Rhoda Turpin Hatcher, Mr. Hatcher had worked for the N & W Railroad 42 years before retiring last year and had been a member of the Tabors Creek Baptist Church 39 years. Mrs. Effie Meade Adkins, 34, Route 1, Louisa, died Thursday, August 28, in a local hospital after an illness of three weeks. Mrs. Adkins, the wife of Earl Adkins, was a daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Miller Meade and the late Leo Meade.  She had been a member of the Methodist Church for the last 20 years. John Burchett, 103, of Yatesville, one of Lawrence County’s oldest residents died last Wednesday evening at 7:50 p.m. after a three day illness. BURTON, Ernie

Ernie Burton, 51, Georges Creek farmer and veteran of World War I, was accidentally shot and killed by his son, Staff Sgt. John E. Burton at 7 a.m. Monday while the two were on a squirrel hunting trip near their home. This was the second accidental shooting while squirrel hunting to occur in the county within ten days. James Simpson, Louisa, was injured Friday morning, August 29, in a similar accident. The son, who is home on a 30 day furlough from Camp Lee, VA, said he and his father became separated and that he saw something red moving a short distance up the hill from where he was, He opened fire thinking it was a squirrel. Seeing his mistake, he rushed to the side of his dying father who lived but 20 minutes. Following an inquest conducted by Dr. Henry S. Young, Lawrence county coroner, a verdict of accidental death was returned. The coroner said Mr. Burton had shotgun wounds in the abdomen, let hand and left arm. A member of the Freewill Baptist Church, Mr. Burton, was a son of Mrs. Julia Castle Burton and the late Milton Burton. The body was removed from the Curtright Funeral Home to the Burton home Tuesday afternoon. Funeral services will be conducted today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. at the Walnut Grove Freewill Baptist Church by the Rev. William W. Moore, the Rev. W. S. Boggs and the Rev. Jay Preston. Interment will be in the Borders Cemetery at Ulysses. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Mona Fraley Burton, the mother, two daughters, Dimple and Nona Burton at home; one son, Staff Sgt. John E. Mrs. Nora Kennison, formerly of Louisa, died Tuesday, September 2, at the Masonic Widows and Orphans home in Louisville where she had been a resident for  several years. Mrs. Kennison was the widow of the late Prof. Edward M. Kennison, one of the founders of the Kentucky Normal College here a number of years ago. Prof.Kennison was active in the operation of the college for mamy years and was a widely known educator in this county. MILLER, Gusta

1908-1947

A gasoline explosion on the Yoxthelmer strip mine project near Anita, PA, Friday, September 5, was fatal to Gusta Miller, 39, formerly of Lawrence County. Miller died September 8 in a Punxsutawney, PA hospital of burns of the face, arms, hands and upper body. Twelve men were hospitalized by the blast and two died. Miller was born May 16, 1908 in Lawrence County, a son of Peter and Anna Gambill Miller, and was married to Blanche Williams on September 23, 1939. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and had lived in the Punxsutawney area for the past two years. He is the uncle of Mrs. Claude Fyffe and Mrs. Russell Robyns. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Robert, 17, and Paul, 7, and the following brothers and sisters: Roscoe Miller, Prestonsburg, Oscar and ARvie Miller, Jenkins, Curtis Miller of Portsmouth, Harrison, Hollywood, CA, Charles Miller, Cincinnati, Anderson, Walnetchi, WA, Mary Miller, Dawson, NB and Maxine and Norman Miller, Martha, KY. John Ruggles, 83 years old, died Tuesday evening at his home in Fallsburg after an illness of four years. He had resided at Fallsburg for the past six months and prior to this he lived at Bear Creek. Mr. Ruggles, a retired farmer, was the son of the late Robert and Elizabeth Stewart Ruggles, and was a member of the Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. for James H. Skaggs, 82, retired farmer and produce dealer who died at 7:45 p.m. Friday night after an illness of ten days. Rev. Phillip Skaggs conduced the services at the residence and burial was in the family cemetery under the direction of Young Funeral Home. Mr. Skaggs had been a resident of Louisa for the past 25 years, having been born and reared at Skaggs, KY. He was a son of James and Polly Holbrook Skaggs. Mrs. Louvena Catherine Berry, 87, widow of the late Greenville T. Berry died at 6 p.m. Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. W. Burton of Ellen, following an illness of two weeks. Mrs. Berry came to Lawrence County from Grundy, VA when she was 17 years old and had lived here since that time. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Funeral services were conducted Monday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. S. B. Ball at the daughter’s home. Burial was in the family cemetery under the direction of Young Funeral Home. Amos Curnutte, 33, died at a Lexington hospital Tuesday afternoon at 5 p.m. after an illness of four months. H was a proprietor of a grocery and service station for several months preceding his illness. A native of Louisa, He was a son of Mrs. Bess Curnutte. George B. Roberts, 59, former resident of Louisa, and a brother of Mrs. Ira See of Ashland, died Sunday night at his home in Memphis, TN, following a heart attack suffered while attending church. Mr. Roberts, a member of the firm of Lehman & Roberts with offices in Memphis and Lexington, KY, had been in the contracting business for about 35 years. He was born in Louisa, VA and moved here when a boy with his parents, Thomas H. and Mary Ester Roberts. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Maxie Carey Roberts, one son, Phillip Roberts; a daughter, Mrs. James A. Madison, Memphis; a brother, Jesse R. SARGENT, L. W.

1944. W. Sargent, 70, died in a Marietta, OH hospital last Wednesday evening following a short illness. Mr. Sargent was a resident of Louisa for 25 years before moving to Marietta. He was engaged in the oil well drilling business and was connected with a large drilling company until seven years ago when he retired. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at the Curtright Funeral Home by the Rev. H. J. Frances of Cincinnati, assisted by Rev. L. M. Rogers of Louisa. Burial was in the Pinehill Cemetery. Louisa Chapter 95 Royal Arch Mason conducted graveside rites. He was a member of the Louisa Methodist Church for 19 years, and a member of the board of stewarts for that church for  a number of years. He was a Mason, a Spanish-American War veteran and was always interested in civic projects. His wife, Minnie Convelton Sargent, preceded him in death in 1944. SIZEMORE, Curtis L.

The first of the nation’s war dead to be returned to this country arrived at San Francisco Friday afternoon aboard the transport Honda Knot. Pfc. Curtis L. Sizemore, 23, a son of Mrs. Tennie Davis of Louisa, route 2, and the late Russell Sizemore, is the first veteran of World War II from this county to be returned from an overseas cemetery. He was a board the Honda Knot and the remains will be brought to the Young Funeral Home here from Distribution Center No. 7 at Columbus, OH at an early date. Big Sandy news, October 16, 1947

SMITH, Curraleen

Miss Curraleen Smith, who was dean of women at Morehead State Teachers College from 1929 until 1943 and taught in the Richmond public school for many years, died suddenly last Wednesday at the home of a cousin on West Main Street in Richmond, KY of a heart attack. Miss Smith was well known in Louisa having been related to Mrs. M. S. Rice of this city and having visited the Rice family here last winter. TIPTON, Willie

Willie Tipton, 48, of Wilbur died yesterday afternoon about 4:30 of a broken neck received in an accident when the truck he was driving on the Blaine road plunged over a twelve foot embankment. Two other occupants of the truck, Walker Thompson, 45, Wilbur, and Andrew Howard, 25, Wilbur, suffered cuts and bruises. Thompson was taken to the Louisa General Hospital for treatment of cuts on the left side of his face, bruises and possible internal injuries. Howard was taken to his home after the accident, having suffered a cut on his dead. The three men had come to Louisa Wednesday on business and were returning home when the accident occurred on a sharp curve about 14 miles from Louisa near the home of Lindsey Thompson. Several persons, who witnessed the accident from Thompson’s yard said the truck hit a series of bumps and holes in the pavement on the curve and swerved down the embankment on the left side of the road. Funeral services were conducted Sunday for Willie Tipton, victim of a truck accident last Wednesday afternoon, at the home of his parents at Revena, KY. Services were conducted by the Rev. He was married to Miss Rhoda Thompson seven years ago. The body was removed from the Curtright funeral Home Saturday to the home of the parents. Dr. Edgar Poe Walters, 67, a native of Johnson County, who began his medical practice in 1907 at Charley, died at his home in Pikeville at 8:15 Monday October 20 of a heart attack. Dr. Walters, a son of Winfrey and Elizabeth Preston Walters, was a member of the Baptist church and was affiliated with the Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ada Walker Walters; three sons, one daughter; three brothers and two sisters. WARD, Luther M.

1898-1947

Luther M. Ward, 49, was fatally wounded about 10:30 Tuesday night after he shot and seriously wounded Lee Thompson, who had been deputized to aid in the arrest at Webbville. The shooting affray resulted when Thompson attempted to arrest Ward. Ward was taken to a local hospital where he died at Wednesday morning. He was shot in the right chest twice and once in the right knee between the knee and the ankle after opening fire and wounding Thompson in the stomach with a .68 calibre pistol.  Thompson was removed to the King’s Daughters hospital I Ashland Tuesday night and his condition was reported as critical. Lonnie Ward, 32, a brother of the deceased man was arrested by Deputy Sheriff Henry Smith and placed in the Lawrence County jail on a charge of drunkenness. He was tried Wednesday morning in County Court and was fined $21.50. County Sheriff Proctor Fyffe reported that the two Ward brothers had been disturbing the peace by shooting into the air while riding on horses up and down the road. When Thompson ordered Luther Ward to get down from his horse, Ward shot the Deputy. Thompson returned the fire and three bullets hit Ward. Mrs. Mary Burton, 93, Buchanan, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jack  Bryan at 1 p.m. following an illness of one year. A resident of Buchanan for 70 years, Mrs. Burton was born November 22, 1853, at Culbertson, KY. She was a daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Lovejoy Collinsworth. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew J. Burton, who died November 27, 1934. Funeral services were held Monday, November 7 at 2 p.m. at the Buchanan Chapel by the Rev. Jake Gallion, 55, a barber at the Henry Clay Hotel Barber Shop in Ashland, and a brother of Ossie Gallion, Webbville, was found dead at 8:15 p.m. Sunday night on the railroad track at Sixteenth and Front Streets in Ashland. A resident of Ashland for 37 years, Mr. Gallion was born in Elliott County, a son of Kess and Rena Williams Gallion. Prior to this she lived in Fort Gay, WV, daughter of the late Alfred H. and Hester Bowens Workman. She had been a member of the Fort Gay Baptist Church for 72 years. Her first husband, Anson Graves, died in 1918 and she was married to the Rev. Jess H. Holbrook in 1921. Rev. Holbrook died in 1944. The body will be removed from the Curtright Funeral Home Friday morning at 10 to her home in Louisa. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2:30 p.m. from the Fort Gay Baptist Church and burial will be made in the Fairview Cemetery in Fort Gay. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Joe Lacker of Marengo, IL, Mrs. J. H. Sparks and Mrs. Hester Porter of Louisa, Mrs. Elisha Crabtree of Logan, WV, and Mrs. W. F. Wilson of Columbus, OH, two sons, C. M. Graves of Portsmouth, OH, and J. W. HOLBROOK, James Norman

1896-1947

James Norman Holbrook, 51, formerly of Lawrence County, died at his home in Wellsville, NY, Wednesday evening, November 5 at 9:30 p.m. after a coronary illness of about two years duration. A son of Hygus and Linda Boggs Holbrook, he was born January 22, 1896, at Blaine. He attended Mayo College in Paintsville, business school in Valparaiso, IN and a mechanical school in Kansas City, MO and was a motor dealer in Kentucky before moving to New York. He had been  a resident of Wellsville for 14 years, having established a dealership there with a partner and later dissolving the firm and operating under the business name of “Jim Holbrook Garage”. Mr. Holbrook was a former secretary of the New York State Automobile Dealers Association and at the time of his death a member of the Allegany County and National Automobile Dealers Associations. He was a member of the Wellsville Lodge of Mason, Ismalia Temple of the Shrine, Coudersport Consistory and the Allegany County Shrine club. Active in community affairs, he had served as a director and vice president of the Wellsville Chamber of Commerce, He also belonged to the Wellsville Exchange Club, Wellsville Lodge of Elks and the Bolivar County Club. He was married January 7, 1928 to Ruth Moore who survives together with one son, James Holbrook, Wellsville, a sister, Mrs. Lon Gambill, Columbus, OH, and a number of relative in this county. Funeral services were conducted at the Christian Temple in Wellsville by the Rev. O. Blakely Hill at 2:30 p.m. November 9. Burial was in the Wellsville Woodlawn Cemetery. KEFFER, William H.

William H. “Bill” Keffer, 63 years old, vice-president and director of the Ashland Oil and Refining Company, died November 17 in the King’s Daughters’ Hospital, Ashland, following a heart attack. He had been ill for several days. Funeral services were held November 19 at the Lazear Funeral Home, in Ashland, with the Rev. C. E. Hawkins, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Ashland, officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Burial Park. Mr. Keffer was widely known in the oil industry, in which he had spent his entire life, and at the time of his death was in charge of pipe lines and crude oil production for the Ashland Oil and Refining Company. KINNER, Fred

Fred Kinner, 70, Louisa, route 4, died of heart trouble Tuesday afternoon at 3:45 p.m. in West Liberty at the home of his son, E. W. Kinner, who is a former editor of the Big Sandy News and manager of the Courier Publishing company in West  Liberty. Mr. Kinner, who had undergone major operations on May 8 and June 8, had suffered a bad heart condition for 8 years. He had been seriously ill for 8 weeks.  A son of L. F. and Elizabeth Durney Kinner, he had served two terms on the Lawrence county Board of Education. Mr. Kinner was born on route 4, August 28, 1870. He had been a member of the Louisa Methodist Church for a number of years. He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Clara Warnick Kinner four sons, M. D., Charleston, WV, E. W. and Fred B. both of West Liberty, and John D. of Ashland; one sister, Mrs. J. P. McCloskey, Cincinnati and one brother, John D. Kinner of Greenup. Funeral services were held this morning at 11 a.m. at the Louisa Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. L. M. Rogers, pastor of the church and the Rev. J. C. MILLER, Levi

Levi P. Miller 58 years old, passed away in a Columbus, OH hospital, Thursday, November 20, after being struck by an automobile. Mr. Miller, formerly a resident of route 1, Louisa, had lived in Columbus for the past four years and had been employed by the Buckeye Steel Casting Company. A son of the late Rev. A. H. and Trenville Johnson Miller, he had been a member of the Methodist Church for 20 years. The body arrived at the Curtright Funeral Home Saturday and remained there until 9:30 a.m. when it was taken to the Meades Branch Consolidated School where funeral services was held at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Dave Hewlett officiating. Burial was in the Levi Miller Cemetery. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Louisa Blackburn; two daughters, Mrs. James Shepard of Columbus, Mrs. Tom Stanton of Portsmouth, VA; two sons, Edgar Miller and Ray Miller both of Columbus; four brothers, Bill, Noah and Ben Miller of Columbus and Joseph Miller of Louisa, route 1, six grandchildren. PRESTON, Emmit, Jr.

The body of Pvt. Emmit Preston, Jr., the second serviceman to be returned here under the current program of returning servicemen from overseas cemeteries and the first to be buried in this county, arrived Monday morning at the Curtright Funeral Home. The body will remain at the funeral home until noon Saturday when it will be removed to the home of the parents at Georges Creek. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Borders’s Chapel, with the Rev. Henry Griffith and the Rev. Gertrude Preston officiating. Burial will follow in the Borders Cemetery. Pvt. Preston, a member of the Eighth Replacement Regiment Infantry, was killed in action during the battle at Henri, Belgium on December 3, 1944. He was born on June 22, 1923, at Stone, KY, a son of Emmit and Mary E. George Preston, Sr. Prior to entering the U. S. Army on May 18, 1943, Preston was employed by the American Rolling Mills at Ashland. The body was accompanied to Louisa by army escort T.Sgt. Robert T. Foster. Pvt. Mrs. Cynthia Ross, 65, wife of Mr. James L. Ross, died Monday, November 17, at 9:45 p.m. at her home at Blaine. Mrs. Ross had been in declining health for the past three years. She had been a member of the Enterprise Baptist Church for the past 37 years. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the home by the Rev. W. W. Moore. James S. Short, 74, a retired railroad construction worker, died at his home Saturday morning, November 22 at 9:30 after an illness of four months. A son of Silas and Elizabeth Powers Short, he was born at Coal, Johnson County, September 5, 1863 (should be 1873). Mr. Short had been a resident of Louisa for the past 27 years, having moved here from Patrick. He had been a member of the Methodist church for 43 years. Funeral services were held at the home at 2 p.m. Monday, November 24, conducted by the Rev. J. C. Hager, pastor of the Louisa Baptist Church and Rev. E. S. Swan, minister of the First Methodist Church. He was buried in Pinehill Cemetery Saturday morning under the direction of Young Funeral Home. He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Jennie Brown Short; two sons, James and Ollie Short, both of Louisa; a sister, Mrs. Jerry Hall and one brother, Grant Short, both of Buffalo, KY. SIZEMORE, Curtis L.

Special services were held on the courthouse lawn Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. for Marine Private Curtis L. Sizemore, 22, the first serviceman killed during the last war on a foreign battle field to be returned to this county. Rev. E. P. Swann, pastor of the First Methodist Church, opened the program with the invocation and was followed by the Rev. Ned Reneau, pastor of the First Christian Church, who read the scripture. Rev. L. M. Rogers, pastor of the Louisa Methodist Church, delivered the memorial address. The program was under the direction of the W. O. Johnson Post 89, American Legions. Ern Compton sang the official Marine Corps hymn and a religious hymn “Face to Face”, to the accompaniment of Mrs. Anna Mary Armstrong at the piano. Rev. J. C. Hager, pastor of the Louisa Baptist Church, gave the benediction.

The body arrived at the Young Funeral Home Sunday morning and it was returned there after the services. The body was taken to the home of the mother, Mrs. Tenie Sizemore Davis, route 2, Louisa, where it remained until Tuesday morning when the funeral party left for Prestonsburg. Memorial services were held at the courthouse in Prestonsburg Tuesday morning at 10:30 by the Legion there. Pfc. Sizemore entered the U. S. Marines in 1942 while residing in Floyd County. He was killed in action February 2, 1944, during the Marshall Islands campaign. He was returned to this country October 19 on the Honda Knot which entered port at San Francisco, CA. Funeral services were held at the New Hope Baptist Church Tuesday at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Roy Blevins, the Rev. Randall Gobel and the Rev. C. F. Conn. Burial was in the Sizemore Cemetery near Water Gap, Floyd County. Mrs. Maria Wright Warren, 83, oldest resident of the Buchanan-Kavanaugh community, died at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday at her home after a long illness. She was the widow of Charles Warren, a native of England, and was born March 27, 1854, in Buchanan. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Powell Wright. Mrs. Warren was a lifelong member of the Kavanaugh Chapel Church. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Stannard Smith, with whom she made her home in Buchanan; a grandson, Charles Warren Smith, Long Island, NY, and two great grandchildren; two nieces, Mrs. Kenneth McLeod of Buchanan and Mrs. Charles Rist of Catlettsburg, and a nephew, W. C. Wright of Catlettsburg. Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Kavanaugh Chapel Church by the Rev. O. P. Smith who will be assisted by Rev. T. P. Warren and Rev. Isaac Webster, 78, a retired farmer of the Webbville section and a resident of Louisa for the past two months, died in a local hospital at 11:45 a.m. Monday, November 17, after an illness of two weeks. A son of the late Frank and Lou Mooreland Webster, Mr. Webster was born at Truesville, Owen County, November 14, 1869. He moved to Gregoryville 35 years ago and had lived at Webbville for 13 years before moving to Louisa. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Webbville Church conducted by the Rev. Andy Kiser of Grayson. Burial was in the Everman cemetery at Gregoryville, Carter County, under the direction of Young Funeral Home. The body of Pfc. Glenn R. Copley, 25, who died in Belgium March 4, 1945, after having been wounded in action, was returned to Louisa Wednesday morning and taken to the Young Funeral Home where it will remain until 11 a.m. Friday morning. Funeral and burial services will be held at Copley cemetery at Webb, WV, Friday at 1 p.m. conducted by the Rev. Ballard Copley of Cassie, WV. An American Legion ceremony will be conducted by the Charles Vancouver post of Fort Gay. Pfc. Copley was wounded February 25, 1945 in Germany and was taken to the Belgium hospital where he died several days later. He was buried in the Henri Chapelle Cemetery in Belgium. He entered the service in 1943 and was assigned to the First Army. He is survived by the widow, Pauline Branham Copley. Harry C. Ferguson, 58, formerly of Louisa, KY, died of a heart attack suffered last Wednesday while at work as a machinist in the N & W roundhouse at Portsmouth, OH. He was the father of Harry Ferguson, Ashland and Mrs. Virginia Carriel and Mrs. Wyelda Maynard of Columbus. The widow, Mrs. Cynthia Cassell Ferguson, also survived. J. B. Crutcher of Louisa is an uncle of the stricken man. Mr. Ferguson was the son of Andrew and Amelia Johnson Ferguson and was born in Louisa. He moved to Portsmouth 35 years ago and was an N & W railroad employee 34 years. The body was removed from the Portsmouth family home Friday morning to the First Baptist Church in Louisa where funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday with the Rev. The Rev. Labe T. Griffith, 93, a Freewill Baptist minister and farmer of the Charley community, died in a local hospital at 2 p.m. Friday, December 5, after an illness of two weeks. A son of Mr. and Mrs. Reece Griffith, Rev. Griffith was born January 2, 1854 at Blaine. He was married to Mary Baker Griffith who died in 1940 and Millie Hickman who died in 1946. Millard Fillmore Hale, 81 years old, passed away at his home on Main Street, Louisa, Monday morning at 4:45 after an illness of one year. Mr. Hale was born in Louisa February 10, 1866, and was a son of the late Henderson and Julia Bowe Hale. He was married to Mariam Shamblin on August 14, 1890. Mr. Hale was a member of the First Methodist Church and the I.O.O.F Lodge of Louisa. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the First Methodist Church with Rev. E. P. Swann officiating and burial will be made in the Pinehill Cemetery under the direction of Curtright Funeral Home. Mr. Hale is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. E. B. MOORE, Richard

Funeral services for Richard Francis Moore, 29, a son of John M. and Mary Cyrus Moore, route 1, Catlettsburg, were conducted Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the home by Rev. Hisel, pastor of the Methodist Church at Vanceburg. Mrs. Byron Young, Louisa, presented the song service. Moore, a brother of J. F. Moore, county agent of Lawrence County was located in Louisa as a soil conservationist for a year following his discharge from the U. S. Army, after having served three years overseas. He was transferred to Vanceburg, KY where he has been engaged in soil conservation work for about a year. Mr. Moore was stricken last Saturday while on a hunting trip in Ohio and was taken to a Portsmouth hospital where he submitted to an emergency appendicitis operation. Complications developed and death occurred at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 26. He was born February 4, 1918 in Boyd County, the youngest of seven children in the family. He attended Catlettsburg schools and graduated at Catlettsburg High School, continuing his education at the University of Kentucky where he became the fifth member of his family to graduate. He entered the U. S. Army in 1941. He was united in marriage six weeks ago, on October 14, to Miss Garnet May of Vanceburg. The couple had made their home in Vanceburg since that time. He was a member of the Methodist Church of Kavanaugh. Surviving are the parents; his wife, three brothers, J. F. Moore, Louisa, John Moore, Jr., Columbus, OH and Laban T. Moore, route 1, Catlettsburg; two sisters, Mrs. D. H. Davenport, Kavanaugh and Miss Laura Moore, Dallas, TX; a brother, William Moore, preceded him in death. James Oney, 69, died suddenly at 8 a.m. Monday, December 1, in Fort Gay near Spears Restaurant, the victim of a heart attack. He was a resident of route 1, Fort Gay, during the past four years, having moved there from Lackeyville, KY. Mr. Oney was employed as a blacksmith for the Belfrey Coal Company at Belfrey, KY. A son of William Oney, he was born November 22, 1878 at Buchanan, VA. He had been a member of the Church of God at Lackeyville for several years. Funeral services for John F. Pelfrey, 69, Wayne, WV, route 1, Louisa-Echo Road, were conducted Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the Greenbrier Church by the Rev. Carman Crabtree. Mr. Pelfrey, who died Wednesday night in a local hospital following an illness of eight weeks, was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Ellen Huff Pelfrey, who died in 1911. Funeral services for T. A. Salmons, 78, of Webb, route 1, near Clifford will be held  at the home Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. conducted  by the Rev. C. C. Preece, the Rev. F. D. Kirk and Rev. Albert Elkins. Mr. Salmons died Monday, December 23, at 7 a.m. at his home following an illness of three weeks. A member of the United Baptist church for 65 years. He was a son of Jerry and Elizabeth Hammonds Salmons. Prior to taking up residence near Clifford, he had lived 23 years at Kermit, WV. SEE, Lucy (Maynard)

Mrs. Lucy M. See, 77 years old died at her home in Kenova, WV, Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. following an illness of one month. Her husband, Lonzo M. See, died in 1909. Mrs. See, a daughter of the late Jess and Sally Adkins Maynard, had lived most of her life at Glenhayes and had lived in Kenova for the past 16 years. She had been a life long member of the Baptist Church. The body was removed from the home to the Curtright Funeral Home Thursday afternoon where the funeral will be held Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. J. C. Hager officiating. Burial will be in the See Cemetery on the Point Road, route 3, Louisa. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. J. N. Fugate of Coraopolis, PA, Mrs. A. W. Goode of Stirat, WV, Mrs. Ralph Kessel of Kenova and Mrs. D. E. Moran of Hastings, NY; four sisters, Mrs. J. W. Hall of Louisa, Mrs. J. C. SKAGGS, Rilda (Collier)

Mrs. Rilda Collier Skaggs, 59, was found in her bed early Sunday morning shortly after having succumbed to a heart attack. Mrs. Skaggs, who had been in failing health for the past 3 years, died at her home about 7:30 a.m. December 14. A daughter of the late Edward and Lucinda Collier, Mrs. Skaggs was born at Mazie, KY, March 14, 1888. She had been a resident of Louisa for the past 30 years and a member of the Baptist Church for 45 years. She became the wife of Mr. Felix Skaggs 41 years ago. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Smokey valley Church, route 1, Louisa. The Rev. A. L. Baldridge of Sciature, OH and Rev. Willie Sparks of Martha officiating. Burial was in the Hay cemetery under the direction of Young Funeral Home. Paul Eugene Steel, ten year old son of Hurson and Nancy Hylton Steele, of Columbus, OH, died at the home of his grandmother, Mrs. Liddie Hylton at Gladys Wednesday night at 10:30 p.m. after an illness of two years. He had been at his grandmothers for the last three months. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Oak Hill School with the Rev. Osie Adams officiating. VANOVER, Jack

Funeral services for Jack Vanover, 71, a former resident of Mazie were held at the Mazie Christian Baptist Church Sunday morning, December 7 at 11 a.m.. Mr. Vanover died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at his home at Martha after having suffered a heart attack. A native of Johnson County, he had been a farmer in the Martha community for the past two years. He was united in marriage some 47 years ago to Miss Angie Lemaster. He is survived by his wife; seven daughters, Mrs. Acie Hay, Mazie, Mrs. Hardy Hay, Columbus, OH, Mrs. Joe Sparks, Martha, Mrs. Leonard Collier and Mrs. Kermit Adkins, both of Plain City, OH, Mrs. Lowell Fyffe, Martha and Miss Eve Vanover, Martha; three sons, William Henry Vanover, Mazie, James Vanover, Londonberry, OH, and George Vanover, Columbus; a sister, Mrs. Lant Keaton, Terryville and three brothers, Scott, Acey and Dewey Vanover, all of Terryville. WELLMAN, Shirley (Burns)

Mrs. Shirley Burns Wellman, prominent local civic leader and former member of the Republican State Central Committee, died at her home here on Friday evening at 11 p.m. after an illness of four years. Mrs. Wellman, a daughter of Attorney M. B. Burns and Mrs. Cora McKinley Burns, was born in Louisa and spent her entire life here. She was married to Harry Gambill Wellman in October 1917. During the war, Mrs. Wellman was chairman of the Lawrence County Chapter of the American Red Cross. She was instrumental in the organization of the Women’s club here several years ago and held the highest set position ???? time of her death. A former chairman of the Lawrence County Republican Woman’s Club, Mrs. Wellman took an active part in state politics during the administration of Felm D. Sampson about twenty years ago, when she was a member of the board of Charity and Correction of Kentucky. Mrs. Wellman was a graduate of Mt. St. Joseph College of Cincinnati and a member of the Louisa Methodist Church. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Louisa Methodist Church by the Rev. Bascom Lakin, the Rev. S. W. Funk, the Rev. Ned Reneau and the Rev. J. C. Hager. Burial was in the Burns mausoleum in Pinehill Cemetery under the direction of the Curtright Funeral Home. Mrs. Wellman is survived by her husband, a sister, Mrs. O. J. Vinson, Louisa, a niece, Sydney Burns Lindsey, Louisa, an aunt, Mrs. J. H. Reynolds of Louisa, and one cousin, Mrs. C. B. Ballard, Pittsburg, PA. Pallbearers were M.L. Marcum, G. E. Smith, L. B. Johnson, W. E. Kouns, W. T. Cain, Jr. and G. R. Burgess. Honorary pallbearers were member of the Louisa Women’s Club. WILLIAMSON, Thurza (Burns)

Mrs. Thurza Burns Williamson, 82, died Wednesday morning at 6 a.m. in a local hospital after having suffered third degree burns Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. in the bedroom of her home after a robe she was wearing caught fire. A daughter of R. T. and Caroline Hatcher Burns, Mrs. Williamson was born at Pikeville, KY, having moved to Louisa with her parents, when she was three years of age. Her husband, Dr. C. H. Williamson, died in Memphis in 1936 while he was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church there. Mr.  and Mrs. Williamson resided in Memphis for 21 years. She returned to Louisa two years after her husband’s death and had lived here for the past 9 years. Prior to her death Wednesday she was one of the oldest living graduates of the Cincinnati Wesleyan College. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Memphis and the Louisa Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Funeral services will be held at the Louisa Methodist Church Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. conducted by the Rev. L. M. rogers, pastor of the church, and Dr. George H. Vick, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Charleston, WV. The body will remain at the Curtright Funeral Home until one hour before the funeral. On Saturday the body will be removed to Memphis, TN with short funeral services being held there Sunday. Burial will be in the Forrest Hill Cemetery. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. F. S. Puller, Evanston, IL, Mrs. Eugene McGehee, Germantown, TN, Mrs. Jack Worthington, Ocean Side, CA, Mrs. Thomas E. Hughes, Albuquerque, NM; three sons, W. Rowland Williamson, Memphis, C. H. WOODS, Andrew J.

Andrew J. Woods, 58, passed away in a Huntington hospital Thursday December 11, after an illness of a year. He resided at Cadmus, KY, and was the son of the late John and Minerva Woods. He was a veteran of World War I. His wife, Myrtle Rice Woods died in 1936. Funeral services were conducted Sunday 2 p.m. from the Dennis Chapel with the Rev. Lloyd Jordan and Rev. Fred Vanhorn officiating. Burial was made in the Vanhorn Cemetery under the direction of Curtright funeral Home. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Damer McCormick and Miss Lillian Woods of Catlettsburg and Miss Ruth Woods of Cadmus; three sons, Andrew J.
