HIGGINS, Beatrice (Dean)

1919-1957

One of the worst tragedies in the history of Fort Gay, WV, occurred Friday, February 8, about 12:45 p.m. when five persons were killed when the Powhatan Arrow, a crack N & W passenger train struck an automobile at a crossing near the Louisa-Fort Gay bridge and less than an hour later, the same train demolished a truck on a crossing at Chatteroy, WV injuring one man.  The deaths at Fort Gay brought expressions of deep regret by engineer L. C. Chapman, 66, and it was the first time that any train in his hands had ever inflicted death in th 47 years of his railroading for the Norfolk and Western Railway. The train, reported traveling at 60 miles per hour, hit the 1954 model car, hurling it 220 feet through the air, blotting out the lives of Mrs. Beatrice Dean Higgins, 37, driver of the car, her daughter, Gladys Delores, 19, a junior and majorette in the Fort Gay High School band, Kenneth David Carroll, 15, of Fort Gay, Lois Ann Ratcliff, 16, and her sister, Dorothy Gail Ratcliff, 12, of Fort Gay, route 2. Mrs. Higgins was taking the group back to school after the noon lunch hour. Friends said that she often took the youngsters in her car, and had crossed the railroad at the same time every day. The train was 14 minutes late and evidently the driver assumed that it had already passed through the town and failed to notice the crossing warning signals, or hear the whistle of the train as it approached the crossing.

All the victims were thrown from the car, and their badly mangles bodies were strewn up and down the N & W tracks. The accident at Chatteroy injured Anderson Hager, 65, of McCarr, KY, a passenger on the back of the truck. He was removed to a Williamson, WV hospital and had been reported in fair condition. On the train was a group of high N & W officials, en route to Bluefield, WA and Roanoke, VA and as soon as the train stopped and the seriousness of the accident was determined, the president , Mr. R. L. Smith, ordered an investigation by H. B. McColgan, assistant superintendent of the Scioto Division. All Fort Gay schools were dismissed for the afternoon following the accident. The bodies of the victims were brought to Louisa funeral homes. The bodies of Mrs. Higgins and her daughter Gladys Delores, and the Ratcliff sisters, Lois Ann and Dorothy Gail, were taken to Curtright Funeral Home and the Carroll youth to the Young Funeral Home.

Funeral rites for the Ratcliff sisters, were conducted Sunday at 2:30 p.m. from the Forks of Hurricane Baptist Church with the Rev. J. C. Hager and the Rev. John Simpkins officiating. Burial was made in the Christian Cemetery, Hurricane.

Joint funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. from the Fort Gay Baptist Church for Mrs. Higgins and daughter, and the Carroll youth, with the Rev. Burl Taylor and the Rev. Audrey Lester officiating. Burial for Mrs. Higgins and daughter was made in the Workman Cemetery on Trace Branch, and the Carroll youth in the Wellman Cemetery at Fort Gay. Mrs. Higgins was born February 22, 1919, at Fort Gay, a daughter of Henry and Pricie Pack Dean. She was a member of the Greenbrier Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to the parents are three sisters, Mrs. Billie Billups of Barberton, OH, Miss Bonnie Dean of Fort Gay and Mrs. Sid Trauglin of Florida; and two brothers, James Dean of Cleveland and John Bert Dean of Fort Gay.
