Funeral services for Jeff Austin, 96, route 1, Louisa, who died Friday, were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Meades Branch Free Will Baptist Church by the Rev. Gallie Isaac. Burial was in the family cemetery. Mr. Austin was born October 31, 1878, in Louisa, a son of the late Frank and Cynthia Austin. He was a retired farmer and railroad employee and a member of the International Order of Oddfellows. His wife, Virginia Austin, died in 1914. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Gypsy France of Columbus and Mrs. Bessie Bell of Delaware, OH; 9 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. The body was at the Heston Funeral Home. Infant Sonja Lynn Ball, daughter of Ernest and Sherry St. Clair Ball of Fort Gay, WV was dead at birth at 10 p.m. Tuesday in Louisa Community Hospital. Surviving in addition to her parents are a half sister, Miss Elizabeth Ann Fuller, at home, and the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Garnet Elizabeth St. Clair of Fort Gay. Funeral services for Phillip Bartram, 31, of Huntington, formerly of Louisa, were conducted Tuesday in Heston Funeral Home. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jack Painter, Dr. Paul T. Brizendine, Dr. Joe Carter, Jr., L. T. James, Larry McDowell and I. C. Rach. Mr. Bartram died at the residence last Saturday. He was born April 2, 1943, in Clifford, KY, a son of James Bromley Bartram of Philadelphia, PA and Ruth Peters Bartram of Louisa. He was a member of the Louisa Freewill Baptist Church and a member of the Teamsters & Chauffeurs Union 505. Survivors include one daughter, Miss Crystal Bartram, of Ashland, KY, one sister, Mrs. J. Mrs. Dova Bentley, 82, route 1, Webbville, died at 4:30 p.m. Friday in a Columbus, OH hospital. Mrs. Bentley was born December 21, 1892, at route 4, Louisa, a daughter of the late Frank and Julia Carroll Coburn. Her husband, Joseph Bentley, died in 1954. Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. Opal Altmeir and Mrs. Charlene Terryman, both of Columbus, Mrs. Catherine Thompson of Webbville, Mrs. Juanita Collins of South Webster, OH, Mrs. Lahonia Reisinger of Lafayette, OH, and Mrs. Adrian Wells of Grove City, OH; a son, Joseph C. Bentley of Willard; three sisters, Mrs. Hazel Bush of Louisa, Mrs. Birdie White of route 1, Catlettsburg, and Mrs. Shirley White of Ashland; two brothers, Dennis Coburn of route 4, Louisa and Ed Coburn of Boomer, WV; 21 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. Services for Mrs. Brumfield, 51, of 700 N. Evergreen Street, Plymouth, MI, who died December 15 were held in the Schrader Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul M. Cargo officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery. Mrs. Brumfield was killed in a December 15 auto accident in Northville, MI. She is survived by her husband, Paul; daughter, Lori, son Michael Coburn of Virginia; three brothers and one grandson. She was born August 15, 1893 at Morgan Creek, a daughter of the late Tom and Meally Stewart Christian. Her husband, George Burchett, died in 1973. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Charley Burchett of Morgan's Creek area; two sons, Lee and Okie Burchett, both of Morgan Creek, a sister, Mrs. Florence Hall of Norfolk, VA; 28 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Mrs. Childers died at 9 a.m. December 23 at the Louisa Community Hospital.Mrs. Childers was born Aug. 16, 1894, at route 2, Louisa, a daughter of the late Newton and Vicie Johnson Price. Mrs. Childers was a retired Lawrence County school teacher, and was preceded in death by her husband, Reck Childers, in 1947. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Cecil Price and Mrs. Raymond Stepp, both of Louisa, and Mrs. Joseph Tuccirone of Bedford, VA; a son, Ronald Childers of Mt. Charles J. Derifield, 49, Valley City, OH, formerly of Clifford, was dead on arrival Tuesday at Valley City Hospital, following a sudden illness. Mr. Derifield was born June 12, 1925, on route 5, Louisa, a son of the late Millard and Ellen Hammond Derifield. He was an employee of Ford Motor Co. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Audrey Tackett Derifield; two sons, Greg and Joe Derifield, both at home; four sisters, Mrs. Sarah James and Mrs. James Ratcliff, both of Clifford, Mrs. Oma Caudill of Florida and Miss May Derifield of Covington, GA; and four brothers, George Derifield of Logan, OH, Bill Derifield of Covington, and Frank and Obie Derifield, both of Clifford. Burial was in Skaggs Cemetery at Martha. Mr. Griffith died January 8 at Belles Chapel Church following an apparent heart attack. Young Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Griffith was born March 6, 1893, at Blaine, a son of the late Letch and Nancy Jane Boggs Griffith. He was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church for six years and a veteran of World War I. She died January 2. Mrs. Harrison was born July 3, 1886 in Washington County, OH, a daughter of the late Cyrus J. and Laura Fleming Minnick. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Louisa and of the Betsy Ross Rebekah Lodge and has been a member of the Order of Eastern Star for more than 50 years. Her husband, Lloyd L. Surviving are a brother, Thomas Compton of route 1, Rush, and a sister, Miss Dixie Compton of Catlettsburg. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Buchanan Chapel by the Rev. Funeral services for Mrs. Stella P. Moore, 94, of Louisa, were conducted January 16, at Heston Funeral Home by the Rev. Eston Calvert. Burial was in Pine Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Moore was born June 14, 1880, at Irad, a daughter of the late James and Jane Prince. She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Louisa. She was the person for whom Stella Moore Field, south of the city, was named after she aided the community to build the baseball field through and exchange of land. Mrs. Moore, active in little league, allowed play on her property, and later sold the land for this use. Survivors include a daughter in law, Mrs. Oscar Moore of Coldwater, OH; a granddaughter, Anna Mary Moore, a daughter, Mrs. Lucille Carter of Chillicothe, OH; and two grandchildren. Pallbearers were Dr. James M. Smith, Dr. James M. Vaughan, Russell Wells, Jim Walker, Robert Brown, Randy Keeton, Don Carter and Chester Salyer. Ruye Kavins, Burial was in Plummer-Christian Cemetery route 1, Fort Gay. Mr. Plummer died January 7 at his residence, following an extended illness. Mr. Plummer was born April 10, 1918 at Offutt, a son of the late Eddie and Edith Williamson Plummer. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War and was a member of the V. F. W. Post 1021 at Fort Gay. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Patsy Combs and Miss Kathleen Riffe, both of Dayton, OH and Mrs. Dixie Thompson of Ironton; four sons, Alton, V. B. and Hetarl Riffe all of Fallsburg and R. T. Mrs. Betsy Bivens, 65, of Cincinnati, a Lawrence native, died at 4:30 a.m. January 13, at the Bethesda North Hospital, in Cincinnati, following a short illness. Mrs. Bivens was born May 10, 1909, at route 1, Louisa, a daughter of the late Sam and Mary Isaac Fletcher. She was a member of the Calvary Pentecostal Church, in Cincinnati, for 37 years, and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include her husband, Robert Bivens, three sisters, Audrey Meade, Cincinnati, Oma Payne, Columbus, and Georgia Kennard, St. Petersburg, FL, one brother, William Fletcher of Cincinnati. Mrs. Bowling was born May 24, 1906 at route 2, Louisa, a daughter of the late Mart and Plina Bowe Rowe. FITCH, Johnny Joe

1924-1975

A Richardson man, charged with beating to death his neighbor, was released Monday on $10,000 bond. Burl Burgess is charged in the Sunday death of 50 year old Joe Fitch, also of Richardson. He died on the operating table at Louisa Community Hospital. Coroner John Ryan said the incident occurred Saturday, noting that Fitch's deathbed statement implicated Burgess. Burgess was arrested by the sheriff's office and was released by County Judge James Martin on $10,000 bond. The case will be presented to the grand jury, which is in session.

Ray H. Miller, 54, formerly of Louisa, died early Sunday morning in a fire in his apartment at Columbus. Fire officials said Miller had apparently dropped a cigarette into his couch before going to sleep. He died of asphyxiation. The fire occurred about 12:05 a.m. About $1,000 damage was reported for the apartment building. Three other resident had been evacuated, but only smoke damage was reported for the other apartments. BRANHAM, Elizabeth (Ellis)

A Perry Street woman burned to death Sunday evening in a blaze at the residence which also injured her husband. Lawrence County Coroner John Ryan said Mrs. Elizabeth Ellis Branham, 39, died in the upstairs bedroom, when her bed caught fire. The body has been sent for a post mortem at King’s Daughters’ Hospital, which is routine in cased of violent death, Dr. Ryan said. Her husband, Curtis Allen Branham, a disabled construction worker, escaped the fire with minor burns. Mrs. Branham’s mother, Mrs. Elizabeth R. Ellis, was in her downstairs apartment at the time of the fire which occurred at about 7 p.m. Lt. Eldon Diamond of the Louisa Fire Department said firemen contained the blaze in about an hour. Damage to the bedroom and attic was reported. Lt. Diamond said a state fire marshal investigated the incident Tuesday. Cause of the blaze has not been determined. The body was found partially under the bed. Mrs. Ellis told the Big Sandy News that about 15 minutes prior to the blaze she took a soft drink upstairs to her daughter and son in law who had been ill with the flu since Thursday. She returned to her living quarters, and heard a sharp noise. She went into the downstairs hall that connects her apartment, and saw smoke from the upstairs. Her son in law was slumped on the top stair, shouting a warning about the fire. Mrs. Ellis said neighbors also smelled the smoke and Branham was rescued from the blaze by Aaron Moon, Bill Copley and Ed Sparks. Mrs. Branham was born January 7, 1936, in Ashland, a daughter of Mrs. Ellis and the late H.L. Ellis, principal at Ashland High School for more than 20 years. Additional survivors include five children, Tony Bocook, Rhonda Bocook, Christy Bocook, Larry Branham and Curt Branham and one brother, Lawrence Ellis of Huntington. Lawrence Coroner John N. Ryan ruled last week that 39 year old Mrs. Elizabeth Ellis Branham, died from carbon monoxide poisoning, as the results of a fire that damaged the bedroom of her apartment on Perry Street. Police Chief Dempsey Bradley said the state fire marshal’s office has not ruled as to the cause of the blaze that occurred in Branham bedroom March 9 where she died. Her husband, Curtis Branham escaped without serious injury. Coroner Ryan quoted Branham that his wife was smoking in bed when the blaze occurred. The both were able to escape, but she returned to the bedroom for $1,034 left in his wallet. She evidently was overcome by smoke, the coroner theorized. Firemen found the wallet with the partially burned money later in the week, and the money was turned over to city police officer Paul Auxier. Big Sandy News, March 19, 1975

Wayne Henry Jones, 46, Browns Mills, NJ, died at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Walson Army Hospital at Fort Dix, NJ following an apparent heart attack. Mr. Jones was born November 18, 1928, at Louisa, a son of the late James E. and Ollie Caines Jones. He was retired from the U. S. Army after 27 years service and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. While serving in Vietnam, he received the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Silver Star, a good conduct medal and the Vietnamese Silver Cross. Funeral services for Lawrence County native Virgil Childers, 62, of Fairborn, OH were conducted April 5 at the Miami Valley United Baptist Church, with burial in Byron Cemetery. Conducting services were Elders Jim Sturgill, Glen Arrowood and Charles Asform. Mr. Childers died in Kettering Memorial Hospital April 2. He was born in Lawrence County, a son of the late William Childers and Mrs. Mintie Childers of Richardson. He and his wife, Sarah Childers, operated an IGA Foodliner and Mel-O-Dee Restaurant in Fairborn. They moved from Richardson to Ohio in 1954. He was a veteran of World War II and a charter member of the Miami Valley United Baptist Church, where he was also treasurer and deacon. Mr. Hardwick was born June 2, 1918, at route 1, Louisa, a son of James M. and Geneva Thompson Hardwick of route 1, Louisa. He was an auto mechanic. Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Mrs. Maude Vaughan Hardwick, two sons, Larry Wray Hardwick of Louisa and Don Harold Hardwick of Louisville; two sisters, Mrs. Charles P. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Anna K. Thomas of Ashland, three sons, Elliott (Coke) Jones and Curtis Spencer Jones, both of Louisa and James Allison Jones of Philadelphia, PA; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The Rev. Floyd Workman, 81, of Eureka Star Route, Gallipolis, OH, died at 6:30 a.m. March 23 in Holzer Hospital. He had been in poor health for the past two years. A retired minister and chief engineer at the Gallipolis Dam, Rev. Workman was born May 14, 1893, in Lawrence county, a son of the late Alfred and Sarah Crawford Workman. He had resided in Gallia County, OH since 1943 and retired from the Gallipolis Dam in 1955. He is survived by his wife, Jenny Pauley Workman, six daughters, six sons. One infant son preceded him in death. Other survivors include one sister, two brothers, 39 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren. Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death. Funeral services were held at Crown City Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Lusher and Rev. Chester Lemely officiating. Burial was in Ridgelawn Cemetery near Mercerville, OH. Rev. Born August 22, 1901, in Webbville, KY, he was the son of Joseph and Della (Tolliver) Caldwell. He was married in 1925 to the former Dovie Kitchen who survives. He was a member of the Hayden Run Baptist Church. Also surviving are 8 children, Dock Jr., Ova, Elwood, Jack and Mrs. Kay Whitt, all of Marysville, Bobby Joe and Mrs. Patty Lingrel of Byhalla; and Homer of Columbus; 20 grandchildren and five great grandchildren; one brother, Troy, Plain City, three sisters, Mrs. Betty Blevins of Plain City and Mrs. Nanna Dunning, Columbus, and Mrs. Pansy Young of Hilliard, OH. She was the daughter of Bud and Nannie Swetnam. Her husband, Jim Haney, died in 1963. She was a former teacher in Lawrence County. Prior to moving to Ohio she resided in Charleston, WV, where she was an employee of the Diamond Department Store. Dr. Frederick A. Millard, 85, Mt. Sterling, died Tuesday morning at his home, after a long illness. He was a resident of Louisa for 32 years, and a retired dentist. Dr. Millard was a member of the Mt. Sterling Christian Church. He served as president of the State Dental Association and was a life member. He was also a life member of the Rotary Club and the Eastern Bluegrass. Survivors include his wife, Florence Eaton Millard and one daughter Mrs. O. S. Moore, both of Mt. Sterling. Mrs. Christian was born March 18, 1896, in Lawrence County, a daughter of the late Robert and Alphoretta Sloan Skeens. She was a member of Unity Baptist Church and had resided in Ashland 56 years. He was a retired lock master, a member of the First Baptist Church and a veteran of the Spanish-American War. His wife, Mrs. Viola Crabtree Copley, died in 1962. Mrs. Anne Peters Johns, age 79, of Daytona Beach, FL, formerly a resident of Louisa, KY and Huntington, WV, died of a heart attack at her home June 14. Funeral services were held Sunday, June 15, at Haige-Black Funeral Home in Ormand Beach, FL. The body was taken to Arlington Cemetery in Virginia where memorial services were held. She was the daughter of the late James B. Peters and Jennie Belle (Bartram) Peters, who later lived in Louisa and were in the hardware business. She was also a resident of Huntington for several years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Taylor Johns, February 1958, entombed in Arlington Cemetery. She was born October 26, 1895 at Clifford, KY. Mr. and Mrs. Johns were married in Louisa, KY, by the Rev. H. B. Huelett. Shew as a member of the Eastern Star of Louisa and received her 50 Year Service Pin, she was also a member of the D.A.R. of Ormond Beach, FL. Mrs. Caroline Tackett, 61, Willard, OH, formerly of East McDowell, died Tuesday, June 24, in the Wayne County General Hospital in Wayne, MI following an extended illness. Mrs. Tackett was born February 16, 1914 in Orkney, a daughter of the late Monroe and Susie Mosley Moore. Her husband, Arville Tackett died in 1973. Tonie Webb, 85, of route 1, Webbville, died at 5 a.m. Sunday in a Lexington hospital following a lengthy illness. Mr. Webb was born February 24, 1890, at route 1, Webbville, a son of the late George Washington and Mary Wells Webb. He was a retired merchant and farmer. WHITES, David Butler

1927-1975

Funeral services for ex Lawrence county judge were conducted Saturday afternoon in the First Louisa United Methodist Church by the Rev. Lowell Langefeld. David Butler Whites, 48, who was elected county judge at the age of 26 in 1953, was killed Wednesday when the van he was driving was crunched by a southbound train. The incident according to the Kentucky State Police Trooper Clyde Johns, occurred at 5:50 p.m. at a railroad crossing, near the Kentucky Power Co. Big Sandy Plant, about 7 miles north of Louisa. The van, police said, was traveling east off a private drive of his ex-mother-in-law, Mrs. Thurston Hurt, where he had left off his young son Pierce. Police said although the van was overturned Attorney Whites, native of Mississippi, was able to escape. He died 20 minutes later enroute to Cabell-Huntington Hospital. Police said engineer of the Chessie System manifest was L. M. Venters of Bellefonte. A second train was halted on the northbound track located between US 23 and the Big Sandy River at the time of the incident. Whites was born January 31, 1927, in Louisville, Miss., a son of the late David B. Whites and Mrs. Ann Bess Peterson Whites, who resides in Louisa. The family moved to Louisa in 1938. He was a 1945 graduate of Louisa High School and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1952 from the University of Kentucky School of Law. He served with 100^th U. S. Army Airborne in Germany and France, attaining the rank of Lieutenant. He opened his law office in Louisa in 1952. Whites, active in Democratic politics more than 20 years, was an officer in the state Young Democratic organization. He was employed with the Kentucky Legislative Research Commission as statute revisor, and was chief attorney for the Kentucky Tax Commission under the administration of Gov. Bert Combs. Whites was the leader and coordinator of the Kentucky Youth Conference; founder of the Greater Louisa Industrial Foundation; commander of the local American Legion Post; member of VFW and the First Louisa United Methodist Church. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Ann Bess Peterson Whites of Louisa, two sons, Timothy G. Whites of Steamboat Springs, CO and Pierce B. Whites of Louisa; one daughter, Anne Lawson Whites of Louisa and one brother, Wyatt R. Whites of Louisa. Mr. Fitzpatrick was born August 4, 1877, at route 2, Louisa, a son of the late Reece and Elizabeth Smith Fitzpatrick. He was a member of the United Baptist Church for 53 years. Her husband, Roy Jordan, died in 1957. Clara Warnock Kinner, 96, of West Liberty, KY, died Monday in the Appalachian Regional Hospital in Morgan County. Mrs. Kinner was born in Greenup, July 8, 1879, a daughter of the late Matthew Scott Warnock and Emma Gibbs Warnock. She was reared in Greenup County and was a graduate of Greenup County High School. She spent most of her life at the Kinner farm at Catalpa, KY in Lawrence County. She was a member of the West Liberty Methodist Church and a widow of the late Fred B. Kinner of Catalpa who died in 1947. Surviving are West Liberty Newspaper Publisher, Earl W. Kinner, former editor of the Big Sandy News. She was residing with Publisher Kinner at the time of her death. Other survivors are John D. Kinner of Ashland, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Two sons, preceded her in death, Maxwell D. Kinner and Frederick B. Kinner. She will be buried in the Durney Cemetery at the mouth of Blaine Creek in Lawrence County. Funeral services for Mrs. Liddie McKinster, 88, route 1, Louisa, who died November 23, were conducted November 25, at the Mary Emily Freewill Baptist Church at route 3, Louisa, by Gallie Isaac and Kay Thompson, ministers. Burial was in Short Cemetery on route 3, Louisa. Mrs. McKinster was born January 14, 1887, at Cordell, a daughter of the late Isiah and Katherine York Short. Her husband, Milton McKinster, died in 1965. Surviving are a step daughter, Mrs. Molly Williams of Marlette, MI; two stepsons, Merel and Mitchell McKinster, both of route 1 Louisa; 6 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. ROBERTSON, Fannie (Robertson)

1890-1975

Mrs. Fannie Robertson, 84, route 2, Fort Gay, WV, died Sunday, November 30, in Louisa Community Hospital. Mrs. Robertson was born December 11, 1890, at route 2, Fort Gay, a daughter of the late William and Nancy Smith Robertson. Her husband, Freelin Robertson, died in 1936. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Alice Thompson, Mrs. Julia Akers, Mrs. Blanche Akers and Mrs. Thursie Robertson, all of Fort Gay; five sons, George Robertson of Louisa, Bill Robertson of route 1, Fort Gay, James Robertson of Fort Gay, Wayne Robertson of Mansfield, OH, and the Rev. Willie Robertson of route 1, Prichard, WV; a brother, William R. Robertson of Toll Gate, WV; 76 grandchildren, 142 great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, December 3, at the Oak Grove Church at Route 2, Fort Gay by the Rev. Gallie Isaac. Burial was in Robertson Cemetery at route 2, Fort Gay. SMITH, John C.

Funeral services for John C. Smith, 75, who died Saturday at the Louisa Community Hospital after a brief illness, were conducted Tuesday December 9, at the Heston Funeral Home by the Rev. William L. Teems officiating. Burial was in the Smith family cemetery at Chapman, KY. Mr. Smith was born September 15, 1900, in Lawrence County, KY, the son of the late James and Belle Perry Smith. He was a retired telegraph operator for C & O Railroad and New York Central and a member of the Cherryville Baptist Church. His wife, Thelma Bishop Smith died in 1936. Survivors include, four daughters, Mrs. Francis Aikman of Lancaster, OH, Mrs. Loraine Pratter of Columbus, and Mrs. Michelle Durham of San Hose, CA; two sons, Walter Smith of Columbus and John C. Smith, Jr., of Bell, WV; one brother, George Smith of route 5, Louisa, 2 half brothers, Clyde and William S. SPENCER, Ella

Funeral services for Miss Ella B. Spencer, 80, of Charley, who died December 11, were conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, December 18, at the Young Funeral Home in Louisa by the Rev. Lowell Langefeld. Burial was in the Spencer Cemetery at Charley. Miss Spencer was born April 9, 1895, at Charley, a daughter of the late Davis and Martha Jane Moore Spencer. STRATTON, Ray C.

1907-1975

Ray C. Stratton, 68, retired vocational educational instructor of West Liberty and Lawrence native died December 6 in St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington a day after undergoing surgery for blocked coronary arteries. Mr. Stratton became ill December 2, and was removed to the hospital Thursday. His condition required surgery to relieve the arteries hat supplied the heart, and survived until the next day. His death came as a shock to his legion of friends. Mr. Stratton came to Morgan County in the late 1930's as instructor of welding in the National Youth Administration program, and had resided in West Liberty since then. Earlier, he had been employed by the C & O Railway and Ashland Oil Co. As instruction in vocational education, Mr. Stratton had motivated and trained hundreds and hundreds of youth to become journeymen craftsmen, and they now are employed in many states and some of the Alaskian pipeline project.

Mr. Stratton was a member of Apperson Lodge No. 195 of Louisa and a member of the West Liberty United Methodist Church. Funeral services were conducted in the Methodist Church, December 9 by the pastor, Rev. Charles R. Humphrey. Mrs. Herbert Lawrence Wells sang "How Great Thou Art", accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Lynn Nickell. Interment was in the Ezel Cemetery under direction Herald and Stewart Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Henry Ray Perkins, Robert Boggs, Norman Gullett, Neil Hunley, Stanley Franklin, Russell Brown, Norman Sheets, and Earl W. Kinner. Masonic rites were conducted Monday night at the funeral home chapel by Highland Lodge of West Liberty. Mr. Stratton was born September 19, 1907, near Louisa, a son of Emerson E. and Lona Akers Stratton and attended Louisa schools. He is survived by the wife, Virgie Wellman Stratton; one daughter, Mrs. Jerry Murphy of Ezel; a sister, Mrs. Luther Landis of Michigan, and a brother, Albert H. Graveside services for William S. Terry, 73, of Louisa, were conducted Saturday by the Rev. Fred Vanhorn at Workman Cemetery. He died December 2, in the Veterans Administration in Lexington. Survivors include one son, Oakley Terry of Tempe, AZ. He was born January 2, 1902 in Elliott County, a son of the late William Terry and Mary Wiley Terry. A veteran of the U. S. Army he served from July 23, 1942 until July 30, 1943. Participating in graveside rites were the local American Legion Post, Veterans of Foreign Ward and Disabled Veterans. Funeral services for Mrs. Frankie Meek Wellman, 86, of route 1, Louisa were conducted at 2 p.m. December 10 in Heston Funeral Home by the Rev. Kay Thompson, Jr. Burial was in Wellman Cemetery at Busseyville. Mrs. Wellman died Monday at 1 a.m. in Louisa Community Hospital following an extended illness. She was born August 1, 1889, in Lawrence County, a daughter of the late Fernando and Belle Baisden Meek. Her husband, John Wellman died in 1965. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Gladys Fugitt and Mrs. Blanche Davis, both of route 1, Louisa and Mrs. Leona Hall of Ashland; four sons, Jack Wellman of Williamson, WV, Cecil Wellman of Huntington, Vanton Wellman of Columbus and Melvin Wellman of route 3, Louisa; two sisters, Mrs. Bralla Perry of Pontiac, MI and Mrs. Pansy Weddington of Newark, OH; 42 grandchildren, 70 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Funeral services for Enoch Wheeler, 84, Blaine, who died December 16, were conducted December 19 at the Old Hood United Baptist Church by Elders Jessie Cordle and Burnso Wheeler. Burial was in Salyers Cemetery at Blaine. Mr. Wheeler was born October 12, 1891, at Blaine, a son of the late Andy and Jane Cordle Wheeler. He was a retired postmaster at Blaine and a former Lawrence County school teacher. He was a member of the Jake Rice Masonic Lodge 606 F & AM for over 50 years, a member of the Royal Arch Chapter of Louisa and a member of the Old Hood United Baptist Church for 70 years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Esther Ramey Wheeler; a daughter, Mrs. Mollie May of Blaine; a son, Andy Wheeler of Blaine, a sister, Mrs. Sarah Armstrong of Bethany, OK; five brothers, William, Elmer, Oceail and Herman Wheeler, all of Oklahoma City, OK and Walter Wheeler of Ashland; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was the husband of Myrtle Fyffe Young, to whom he was married for 50 years. He was a member of Louisa Freewill Baptist Church, a retired merchant, owner of Young's Grocery at Louisa for 30 years, a former postmaster at Skaggs, KY, and a Kentucky Colonel. Survivors include two daughters, Miss Darlene Young, at home, and Mrs. Tom McGee of Louisa; three sons, Joe A. Young and Maxwell Young both of Louisa and Matthew Young of Ashland, KY; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Sagraves of Tustin, CA, and Mrs. Elizabeth Osborn of Mount Sterling, KY; two brothers, Mayo Young of Cherokee, KY and Luther Young of Portsmouth, OH and four grandchildren.
