KNIGHT, James A.

Services were held Sunday, May 14 for retired Circuit Judge James A. Knight, who died May 11 at his Paintsville residence after a long battle with diabetes. He was 63. Knight served as judge in Division II of the 24th Judicial Circuit for nearly 20 years. He took office in November 1980 and retired in January of this year. Knight served as Johnson County attorney before being elected circuit judge. Prior to becoming an attorney, he was a teacher and businessman. During is tenure as chief judge in the 24th Circuit, Knight issued hundreds of civil judgments and presided over numerous high profile criminal cases. Perhaps his most well known and controversial ruling was in the 1980’s when he decided that the four county Big Sandy Regional Jail Authority had the power to operate the regional detention center in Paintsville. His initial ruling led to several years of appeals. During his retirement reception last December in Johnson Circuit Court, Knight was remembered as a dedicated public servant who was impartial on the bench. “I believe here that both the circuit and the district courts are generally regarded throughout the state as courts of law, : fellow Judge Stephen N. Frazier said during the reception. “Not courts of local concern. Not courts of home cooking…It’s taken a long time for that kind of reputation to build over the years. There’s a succession of people who have made that happen, and the one who contributed the most is retiring. Frazier, also of Paintsville, was Knight’s law partner before they were both elected circuit judge. Current Circuit Judge Daniel Sparks of Louisa, who succeeded Knight, said last December that he “always maintained the greatest degree of respect and admiration” for Knight. Sparks said Knight once gave him a piece of advice: “Do what you think the right thing is to do, and, if you do that you will be doing your job well as judge”. Knight was born Feb 1, 1937, Letcher County, the son of the late Olen and Willa Mae Barker Knight. He is survived by his wife, Julia Conley Knight; 3 daughters, Jayme Runyon of Paintsville, Leigh Ann Furccolow of Charlotte,, N, and Beth Phelps of Paintsville; 2 brothers, Gary Knight and Wendell Knight, both of Paintsville and 4 grandchildren.
