RAY, Claude Leo
An 18 year old youth met death on the highway, Tuesday night at about 11 p.m. when he was struck by a tow truck driven by Wayne D. Cole of Ashland. The youth, Claude Leo Ray, accompanied by John Paul Robinson, had been hiking toward his home at Pikeville, on highway 23, near Ulysses, when he and his companion became sleepy. He went to sleep in the center of the highway and woke up by the noise made by the approaching truck and bewildered in his sleepy condition, darted in front of the truck. The driver and his companion rider, Henry Gullett, had come over a slight incline in the road and thought that the sleeping boy in the middle of the road was a sack which had fallen off a previous truck until the "sack" jumped up and ran in front of the truck, which was traveling about 35 miles an hour. Cole said he was too close to stop the truck in time to save the youth's life. Had the young fellow remained in his sleeping position he would still have been alive, because he was not in the path of the truck until he jumped up and ran toward the center of the right hand lane.
The driver and his companion stopped about 117 feet from the scene of the accident but did not go back because they saw the other boy and "heard voices" which made them think it was a hijacking stunt. Cle, however, stopped Emmett Boling, who came driving down the road, and he in turn called, H. Curtright, of the Curtright Funeral Home, who sent an ambulances to the scene. Cole and Gullett then drove the truck to Louisa where they contacted Sheriff Proctor Fyffe who returned with the men to the place of the accident. Ray, who was still alive, upon arrival of the ambulance, died on his way to the Riverview Hospital. An inquest was held at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning at the office of Sheriff Fyffe, Acting Coroner, Dorothy Van Meter, presiding. County Attorney W. D. Sparks conducted the inquiry, which brought out the material facts stated above. R. P. Reid, of the Curtright Funeral Home, stated the condition of Ray following his death: "Badly hurt, one ear torn off, the other ear partly torn off, face and body injuries, any of which might have proven fatal." Sheriff Fyffe testified to the correctness of Cole's statements regarding reporting the accident to him and the length of track marks of trucks stopping.
The coroners Jury which was composed of Bee Riffe, Mack Preece, Luther Gartin, Sheridan Ward, J.H. Preece, and Ed Johnson returned a verdict of "Unavoidable accident" in less than fifteen minutes after deliberations started. It may be added that the victims pal, Robinson, said at the hearing that he had warned his friend against sleeping in the center of the road, but that Ray had insisted on sleeping there. There was no drinking involved in the accident. Funeral services are schedules to he held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Regular Baptist Church at the mouth of Chloe Creek. Rev. Joe Hopkins officiating. The body was removed to Pikeville yesterday by the Curtright Funeral Home. He is survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Kinsey Ray, two brothers, two sisters, and a maternal grandmother.
