COLE, Willie

A gunman sent up from Lawrence County after staging a 19 cent holdup, dived head first 40 feet to his death Sunday just after being found hiding with three other prisoners atop the boiler room at La Grange, KY State Reformatory.  Warden Renald L. Whaley reported Willie Cole, 32, darted to the edge of the building roof and jumped head foremost to the concrete paving below. Whaley said it definitely was suicide. Cole entered La Grange last November to serve a 21 year sentence for armed assault. He was convicted of holding up and beating William Fletcher Smith, 73, of route 2, Louisa. The holdup yielded only 19 cents, the Lawrence County sheriff's office said. Incidentally, Smith was killed in a bus accident last September 2 between Louisa and Inez. Cole made his break as several guards were taking the four prisoners from the roof--where they apparently had hidden about 48 hours. Officials said the four early Friday morning cut through a restroom grating. At first it was believed they fled over the prison wall. But instead they mad their way to the boiler room roof. Two other prisoner earlier Friday fled over the wall amid a hail of shots. One of these was captured Saturday. Just after daybreak yesterday, the warden said, a guard detected movement atop the boiler room. Guards then found the four prisoners. Warden Whaley said Cole had told his companions he would not be taken alive. Cole had lived in "The Point" section of Lawrence County. The sheriff's office said Cole's estranged wife and several children reside in Louisa. The other found with Cole on the boiler room roof were listed as Larry Sammons, 27, Pike County, serving five years for grand larceny, James North, 23, Hazard, 17 years for voluntary manslaughter, and Ed Meade, 30, Lawrence County, five years for grand larceny. CORDLE, Jay

Jay Cordle, 22, Blaine, KY, died Thursday shortly after noon in Grant Hospital, Columbus, as a result of injuries received in a fight with Robert Thompson, 18, Cordell, KY, Monday evening at a wood-cutting camp near Honey Forks, OH. On charges filed by Edmund Cordle, Cordle's father, in Justice of Peace Sam Whikehart's court, a warrant for Thompson's arrest was issued to Sheriff A. J. Waldron Thursday afternoon. Although the fight occurred around 8:30 Monday evening, Sheriff Waldron was not notified until after 9 Tuesday night. Upon investigation, he learned from Jess Chaffin, Blaine, KY, and Paris Tackew, Wilbur, KY, witnesses of the fight and fellow workers of the two men, that Cordle and Thompson had had several arguments during the day over a disagreement concerning Cordle's wife. Several times a fight started, but each time it was broken up by Chaffin and Tackew, according to the witnesses. They said that Cordle and Thompson had been drinking during the evening and after another argument, the fight began in earnest.

During the fight, Chaffin and Tackew said, Thompson picked up something and hit Cordle over the head with it. This something found by Sheriff Waldron Wednesday, proved to be a wooden stake used on open trucks to prevent the load from sliding off. the stake was three inches in diameter and18 inches long. Cordle's father, who is a foreman of the outfit, returned to camp Tuesday morning from Logan where he had been staying. Finding his son unable to go to work, he and the three others went to work as usual. When they returned at noon, they found younger Cordle unconscious and an ambulance was called to take him to the Hocking Valley Hospital.

The Logan hospital reported his condition as being very serious and Wednesday night he was taken to Grant Hospital in Columbus, where he was admitted at 12:45 a.m. Thursday. an examination revealed that Cordle's skull was fractured in several places and that he had suffered brain injuries. An operation was performed Thursday morning. His death occurred at 12:25 p.m. Coroner Dr. Evans has not yet released an official verdict as to the cause of death.

Cordle's father had meanwhile fired Thompson from the job and brought him into Logan, instructing him to return to Kentucky. He said that he didn't want Thompson to cause any more trouble. Thompson's brother is the elder Cordle's son in law. This was before the extent of the younger Cordle's injuries were known, and partially explains the delay before Sheriff Waldron was contacted which was not until after Cordle had been taken to the hospital and Thompson had presumably returned to Kentucky. When the elder Cordle learned of the death of his son he filed charges with the justice of the peace on the grounds that Thompson had unlawfully and maliciously caused the death of his son. big Sandy News, October 4, 1951
