MATNEY, Alfred

Foul play has been discounted as the cause of death of a 68 years old Daniels Creek man, Alfred Matney, who remains were found Monday afternoon at the residence. Sheriff David Compton was summoned Monday morning to the residence, owned by Bill Watts, located on an unpaved road near Daniels Creek. He was asked to check on Mr. Matney by his sister, Ellen, who hadn't heard from him in a month. When Sheriff Compton arrived with County Jailer Lindsey (Bo) Davis and Elliott Clark, the remains were found in the bedroom. About 15 dogs were running about in the residence, able to gain entry because the front door was ajar, Sheriff Compton noted. His billfold was found in a drawer containing some money, and several guns were found inside the house. Also his boots were found beside the bed. Although the inside was "in shamble" Sheriff Compton believed this was caused by the dogs, and not unwelcome intruders. He said Wells told of taking Mr. Matney some groceries in early January and that the man was complaining of chest pains and his arm hurting. the remains were taken to Coroner Dr. John Ryan, who identified them as Mr. Matney. He plans to visit the site. He is survived by another sister. Young Funeral Home said funeral arrangements are incomplete. Big Sandy news, February 23, 1977

MEADE, Shirley

1920-1977

An anticipated fun-filled vacation for five Lawrence County women and a Boyd Countian in scenic, balmy Acapulco, turned into a horrible nightmare with the traffic death of 57 years old Shirley Meade of Louisa. Mrs. Meade, local civic and political leader, died Friday afternoon in an ambulance enroute to an Acapulco hospital. Local police reported she was struck and killed by at taxi cab in front of the El Presidente Hotel while her friends waited in two cabs preparing to return home to Lawrence county. It was the tragic climax of a week-long vacation in one of the most acclaimed tourist Meccas in the western world--95 degree temperatures for lounging on platinum beaches and a yacht cruise on the blue Pacific.

The six--Mrs. Meade, Mrs. Irene Myers, Mrs. Aileen Compton, Mrs. Mary Blankenship, Mrs. Rose Perry, all of Louisa and Mrs. Ruth Geyer of Catlettsburg, flew out of Louisville October 16 for Acapulco, via a change over in Dallas. They arrived October 17 amidst the excitement of a large convention of fellow Americans in the El Presidente Hotel conducted by Commonwealth Insurance. There was gala entertainment nightly in the hotel, which the group enjoyed and of course, sight seeing, according to Mrs. Blankenship. On the day of their departure, October 21, about noon Acapulco time (2 p.m. Louisa time), the Eastern Kentuckians were in the process of checking out of the hotel--summoning taxi cab and loading luggage. Mrs. Blankenship said Mrs. Meade wanted to buy some last minute items from a gift shop that was adjacent to the hotel. The others waited in the two cabs. Finally after a time lapse, they began to become concerned. One of their cab drivers told of a nearby accident in which an American woman dressed in a black suit and white blouse was struck by a car and picked up by an ambulance. Mrs. Blankenship pointed out they weren't concerned because Mrs. Meade was wearing a black suit and red blouse.

The wait continued, so the driver was asked to make a second inquiry, and when he returned it was then they found out the woman was wearing a red blouse and black suit. Several of the ladies went into the hotel requesting the manager make further inquiry, and he found out that Mrs. Meade was dead. Mrs. Compton informed the remainder of the group of Mrs. Meade's death and fainted on the hotel driveway. Mrs. Blankenship said Mrs. Compton was rushed inside, revived in the hotel and a doctor was called. The hotel manager contacted the U. S. Embassy and Mrs. Blankenship attempted to contact with the aide of a hotel travel bureau person, Mrs. Meade's relatives in Louisa, but to no avail.

She was able to contact the Louisa Community Hospital to get in touch with her brother, James Hager, and to notify the kin of the other ladies that they were all right. In frustration as to what to do next, they decided to seek out a Mexican guide who had befriended them during the trip. After several telephone calls the guide found out the whereabouts of the body and he identified her. Through a cab driver, they found out Mrs. Meade was struck by a Volkswagon taxi and the impact threw her across the hood into the windshield, Mrs. Blankenship, noted. Mrs. Meade suffered cuts of the head and neck, and the cab driver informed them that she died enroute to the hospital. It was at the police station that Mrs. Blankenship and Mrs. Compton filled out identification and background forms on Mrs. Meade and they learned that the driver of the death cab had been arrested and jailed. The Eastern Kentuckians left Mexico Saturday and got into Louisa the following day.

Mrs. Meade was administrator at Louisa Medical Clinic for 27 years and active in Democratic politics. She was past county Democratic chairwoman, associate director and past treasurer of the 7th Congressional District Democratic Women, and past president of Lawrence County Democratic Women. She was also county chairwoman of the Lawrence County unit of the American Cancer Society; chairman of county Heart Fund; member of Louisa Woman's Club, Rebekah Lodge; Kentucky Colonel, and Sunday school teacher at the First Baptist Church. She was born September 2, 1920, at Thealka, a daughter of the late James C. and Edna Sizemore Hager. Hager of Louisa and Arthur Hager of Kansas City, KS and one sister, Mrs. Florine Hampton of Louisa.
