BOOTH, James
Rev. James Booth, for 71 years a minister in the United Baptist Church and believed to be the oldest resident in the Big Sandy Valley, died last Saturday night at his home on Wolf Creek in Martin County 21 days before his 100th birthday. Booth was a native of near Louisa and was a brother to Daniel Booth of Eloise. After the first of his four marriages, he moved to Mason County, WV and resided on a farm for some years before returning to Kentucky to enter the ministry in Martin County. Booth, who married his fourth wife on his 94th birthday and boasted that "he beat her in a foot race after the ceremony," observed simple rules to which he attributed his longevity. They included: Don't worry and don't add tomorrow's troubles to today's problems; walk at least a mile a day with head and shoulders back, and lastly plant a garden each spring and watch it grow--There is no better antidote for worry and old age."

Booth, a picturesque rural minister, achieved wide publicity last year when he was reunited with a son, Sidney V. Booth, 76 year old grocer of Huntington, WV. for 60 years the two men had lived only 80 miles apart, neither knowing of the other's whereabouts. Booth and his first wife, by whom he had 2 sons, separated before his return from Mason County, WV to Martin County, KY and the father and sons lost trace of each other. The father and one son, the Huntington grocer, were reunited in March of last year after the son saw a picture of his father in connection with a feature story of the aged minister in a Huntington paper. Sidney investigated, found the elder Booth unable to talk because of a paralytic stroke and said he couldn't be certain they were related. The father recovered, he related incidents which occurred on the Mason County farm definitely establishing his parentage and the 2 discovered that for more than 60 years they had been separated only by the 80 miles between Huntington and Lovely. Funeral for the aged minister was conducted near Warfield, Monday, but there were no flowers at the last rites. One of Rev. Booth's last requests was, "Tell my friends to send no flowers. Tell them to sue the money to buy food for hungry children." He is survived by his wife, and his other son, Harvey of Westerville, OH. Big Sandy News, Mar 28, 1941
