AUSTIN, James Winton

1873-1956

James Winton Austin, 82, Fallsburg, KY, died at his home at 1:40 a.m. Tuesday after an illness of several days. He suffered a stroke of paralysis last Saturday. He was born March 6, 1873, at Prichard, WV, a son of the late Henry Calvin and Mary Thomas Austin. He had been a member of the Methodist Church 48 years. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday (today) at the Fallsburg Tabernacle, the Rev. Lloyd Jordan and the Rev. Gallie Isaac will officiate, and burial will be in the Austin Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mollie Heaberlin Austin, one sister, Mrs. Mary French of route 4, Louisa, two brothers, J. C. Austin of Fallsburg and W. F. Austin of Route 4, Louisa. BOGGS, Cora (Boggs)

1881-1956

Mrs. Cora Florence Boggs, 74, of Martha, KY died at her home Sunday morning following a long illness. Funeral rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday (today) at Cains Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. John Pelfrey and the Rev. Willie Sparks. Burial will be in  Boggs Cemetery at Blevins, KY. Mrs. Boggs was born at Sacred Wind, KY, on August 23, 1881, a daughter of the late Washington and Miranda Edwards Boggs. She was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church. Her husband, Hannibal H. Boggs, died 30 years ago. Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. Clifford Baker of Burnsville, WV, Mrs. Orbin Dial and Mrs. Bernard Griffith of Reynoldsburg, OH, Mrs. William Pickrell of Louisa, Mrs. Hargis Ferguson of Martha, KY and Miss Sylvia Boggs, at home; four sons, Ora Boggs of Blaine, Russell Boggs of Pueblo, CA, U. S. Army; two sisters, Mrs. Harry Griffith of Hannah, KY and Mrs. George Mattox of Cherokee, KY, five brothers, Troy Boggs of Ashland, Charles Boggs of Hilliards, OH, Henry Boggs of Ohio, Harry Boggs of Hannah and John Boggs of Martha. BOYD, Cora (Johnson)

1875-1956

Mrs. Cora Johnson Boyd, 80, of Louisa, formerly of Ulysses, died in a local hospital Sunday. In Louisa she had made her home with a son, Bascom Boyd, for the past few months. Her husband, Henry H. Boyd, preceded her in death 30 years ago. Funeral rites were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Bell's Chapel  Free Will Baptist Church. Burial was made in Boyd Cemetery at Ulysses. Mrs. Boyd was born at Charley, KY, March 3, 1875, a daughter of the late Thomas and Lucinda Muncy Johnson. Surviving in addition to the son, Bascom Boyd, is a foster son, Denver Compton of Louisa route 1. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Curtright Funeral Home. CURNUTTE, David M.

1875-1956

David M. Curnutte, 70, of Route 1, Prichard, WV, (Queen's Creek), died at his home at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, January 5. He was born at Fort Gay, September 26, 1875, a son of the late J. H. and Margaret Moore Curnutte. He was a retired farmer and had lived at Prichard for the past 29 years. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at the Baptist Church Forks of Hurricane, with the Rev. Harry Christian officiating. Burial was made in Lakin Cemetery on Big Hurricane. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Nan Eatley? of McDermott, OH; one brother Ott Curnutte, of Route 1, Prichard and several nieces and nephews, The body remained at the Curtright Funeral Home until time for the services Sunday. DAVIS, Tenie (Wallen)

1896-1955

Mrs. Tenie Davis, 59, of route 2, Louisa (Walbridge) died at 9 p.m. Friday at her home after a heart attack. She had resided in Lawrence County 15 years. She was born January 30, 1896, at Water Gap, (Floyd County), KY, a daughter of the late Joe and Mary Belle Calhoun Wallen. She was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church 20 years. Her second husband, Charlie Davis, died January 1, 1943. The deceased is the mother of the late Curtis Sizemore, first World War II Marine soldier, to be returned to the U. S. A. for burial. Funeral services were conducted Monday at Water Gap, near Prestonsburg, KY, with the Rev. Willie Moore and the Rev. Gallie Isaac officiating. Interment was made in the Sizemore Cemetery, under the direction of the Young Funeral Home. Surviving are her first husband, Russell Sizemore, one daughter, Mrs. Charlie York of Long Beach, CA, two sons, Joe W. and Thomas C. Sizemore, both of route 2, Louisa, one sister, Mrs. Jack Boccilrio of San Fernando, CA; three brothers, Sam and Lee Wallen of Wheelwright, KY and Scott Wallen of Lancer, KY and three grandchildren, January 6, 1956

 

FANNIN, Tennie (Price)

1879-1956

Mrs. Tennie Hicks Fannin, 76, died at the home of a son, Herbert Hicks, 1113 Rice Street, Louisa Sunday following a heart attack. Mrs. Fannin had been living with her son for the past three months. She was formerly of Richardson, KY. She was born march 27, 1878, at Patrick, KY, a daughter of the late Cleve and Nancy VanHoose Craft (Note: this should be PRICE). Mrs. Fannin had been a member of the Missionary Baptist Church for 42 years. Her husband, Emory Fannin, died in 1937. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at the Richardson Methodist Church with the Rev. J.C. Hager officiating. Burial will be in the Price Cemetery at Richardson. The body will remain at the Curtright Funeral Home until 9:30 Wednesday when it will be taken to the church. Surviving are one son, Herbert Hicks, three sisters, Mrs. Pearl Shepard of Denbigh, VA, Mrs. W. M. Daniels of Richardson, and Mrs. Ed Parks of Rt. 4, Ft. JORDAN, Norman

1955-1956

Norman Jordan, 6 month old son of Mr. and Mrs. George Jordan of Chapman, KY, died in a Huntington hospital Thursday after an illness of five days. He was born July 18,1955, at Louisa. The body was removed from the Curtright Funeral Home to the residence Friday afternoon where friends called. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Chapman Methodist Church with the Rev. Gallie Isaac officiating. Burial was made in the Jordan Cemetery. He is survived by his parents, two sisters, Cidney Ellen and Pansy; two brothers, James Earl and Bobby George, all at home, the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Carter of Gallup, KY. LAYNE, Martha Ellen (Austin)

1861-1956

Mrs. Martha Ellen Layne, 94, of Louisa, route 4, died Saturday night at the home of a daughter, Mrs. H. C. Caines of 3412 Central Avenue, Ashland where she had been for the past six weeks. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Buchanan Chapel by the Rev. W. W. Moore and the Rev. Lloyd Jordan. Burial followed in the chapel cemetery. The body was taken to the home of a son, Leslie Layne of Louisa, route 4, at 3 p.m. Tuesday from the Curtright Funeral Home. Mrs. Layne was born in Lawrence County, OH, on March 27, 1861, a daughter of the late H. C. and Mary Thomas Austin. She was a member of the Methodist Church for 71 years. Her husband, William S. Layne, preceded her in death 36 years ago. Surviving besides the son and daughter, are two other daughters, Mrs. S. N. Stewart of Ashland and Mrs. J. E. Potter of Grover, CO; a sister, Mrs. Mary French of Louisa, route 4, two brothers, Wyley Austin of Louisa route 2, and John C. Austin of Fallsburg, KY, one brother James Austin, passed away Tuesday following his sister's death Saturday. Eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren also survive. MCKENZIE, Lillie Jane (Spence)

1876-1956

Mrs. Lillie Jane McKenzie, 79, of Torchlight, KY, died at 1:30 p.m. Saturday following an extended illness. Mrs. McKenzie was born at Georges Creek, KY, January 31, 1876. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the residence with the Rev. Gallie Isaac and the Rev. G. York officiating. Burial was made in the family cemetery at Torchlight. Mrs. McKenzie's second husband, Floyd McKenzie, died December 11, 1955. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Tom Collins of Detroit, Mrs. Florence McKee of Portsmouth, OH, Mrs. Lafayette Vincent of Route 2, Fort Gay, WV, Miss Alice and Miss Chloe Williams, both of California. Five sons, Clyde, Willard, and Edward McKenzie, all of route 1, Louisa, Lawrence and Floyd, Jr., both of Detroit, and Walter Williams of Bluefield, WV; one half brother, Mose Damron of Huntington, also survives. PRINCE, Genoa (Thompson)

1877-1955

Mrs. Genoa Thompson Prince, 78, of Louisa, route 3, Irad, died at the home at 8:50 p.m. Saturday night following an illness of four months. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Dry Ridge Methodist Church by the Rev. S. B. Ball. Burial followed in Thompson Cemetery at Adams, KY. The body was at the Young Funeral Home and was taken to the church at 1 p.m. Monday. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Her husband, Ulysses G. Prince, died March 23, 1950. Mrs. Prince was born March 25, 1877, at Ellen, KY, a daughter of the late Isaac and Rebecca Berry Thompson. Surviving are a granddaughter, Mrs. Edward Diamond of Louisa, route 3, two great grandchildren and two brothers, Milton Thompson of Adams and John Thompson of Ellen. Bee Saulsbury, 86, of Potter, KY, a retired Chesapeake & Ohio Railway employee, died Tuesday morning at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Mary Moore, Kenova, WV. He had been in ill health for the past year. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday (today) at the Curtright Funeral Home, with the Rev. J. C. Hager and the Rev. Willie W. Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery. He had been a Kenova resident for three years and was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church. He was born June 5, 1869, a son of the late William and Jennie Martin Saulsbury. His wife, Mrs. Ersula Waller Saulsbury died in 1950. Surviving in addition to Mrs. Moore are three other daughters, Mrs. Sid Hayes of Louisa, Mrs. T. J. Vance of Ashland and Mrs. J. J. Myers of San Diego, CA; a son, Wesley B. Gwendolyn Joyce Travis, 9 month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy B. and Mildred Moore Travis, of route 2, Mechanicsburg, OH, died Monday, January 2, at the Mercy Hospital, Urbana, OH. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday (today) at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Lucien Mounts of South Vienna, OH, officiating. Burial will be made in the Travis Cemetery near Wilbur, KY. Survivors include the parents; five sisters, Minnie Bell, Nancy Jane, Lola Jean, Virginia Mae, and Patricia Ann Travis; six brothers, Bert, Richard, Roy, Jr., Donald, Robert Lynn and Danny Travis, and the maternal grandparents. Jay and Kay Wallace,, infant twin son and daughter of Milzie and Eliza Jane Pridemore Wallace, died in a local hospital Friday, January 6, one day after birth. Graveside services were conducted Saturday, January 7, at the McClure Cemetery, Gallup, KY at 2 p.m. Survivors include, besides the parents, three sisters, and the grandparents, Lon Wallace, Ulysses, KY and John Pridemore, Gallup, KY.   1. S. Workman, 88, died at 12:15 a.m. Wednesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Arthur Kitts, route 2, Fort Gay, WV, (Paddle Creek section), where he had resided for the past seven months. The deceased, a carpenter, and farmer, was born March 7, 1867 at route 2, Louisa, where he had resided for 86 years. He was a son of the late Stephen and Celie Artrip Workman. He had been a member of the Baptist Church for 30 years. His wife, Jane Artrip Workman preceded him in death 27 years ago. The body will be removed from the Curtright Funeral Home Thursday at 3 p.m. to the home of the daughter, Mrs. Kitts, where funeral rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. Interment will be made in the Workman Cemetery, Route 2, Louisa, KY. Survivors include four other daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Rowe of Huntington, WV, Mrs. Luther Kitts, Mrs. Dorcus Castle and Mrs. Garnet Stucker of Fort Gay, three sons, Clyde, George and Jay Workman, of B??, WV and one sister, Mrs. Jemima Crawford, route 1, Louisa. CARTER, Seebert Ethern

Seebert Ethern Carter, 53, died at the home of a brother, Clyde Carter, Columbus, OH, Friday afternoon following an illness of one year. Mr. Carter was a former Louisa resident. He was born June 16, 1902, at Louisa, a son of the late James and Lyda Jane Moore Carter. He had been a member of the Free Will Baptist Church for 3 years. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Carter Chapel with the Rev. Gallie Isaac and the Rev. William W. Moore officiating. Burial was made in the Carter Cemetery, route 3, Louisa. The body remained at the Curtright Funeral Home, until time for the service. Surviving are one sisters, Miss Lura Carter of Utica, OH; one half-sister, Mrs. Sylvia Bevis of Logan, WV, two brothers, Harvey Carter, route 3, Louisa, Roy Carter, Columbus and 6 nieces and 2 nephews. DELONG, Eva (Setser)

1894-1956

Mrs. Eva Delong, 61, of Adams, KY died Saturday evening in a Huntington hospital of burns she suffered at her home early Saturday. L. Byron Young, Lawrence County coroner, said Mrs. Delong was standing in front of an open grate fire when her clothing became ignited. He said 85 percent of her body was affected by the burns. Her husband, James Delong, was in the barn at the home at the time of the accident. He heard her screams and rushed to the house. The family formerly lived on Johns Creek, Floyd County, Mrs. Delong was born August 15, 1894, at Edgar, KY, a daughter of the late William Jackson and Mary Burchwell Setser. She was a member of the United Baptist Church. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 10 a.m. from the residence. The Rev. Gallie Isaac and the Rev. Oscar Sagraves officiated. Burial was made in the Wells Cemetery at Auxier, KY. She is survived by her husband, James Delong; one daughter, Mrs. Joel Richmond of Van Lear, KY, four sons, James Edward, Alton and Elmer Delong of Columbus, OH and Arland Delong, a student at Morehead State College; three sisters, Mrs. Labe Simpson of East Point, KY, Mrs. Alta Delong of Busseyville, KY and Miss Lucy Setser of Van Lear; two brothers, James Setser, Auxier and Jake Setser of  Van Lear; and 9 grandchildren. FUGITT, Monroe

56, of Torchlight, a farmer, died at 8:30 p.m. Monday at his home of a heart attack. Funeral services will be conduced at 2 p.m. Thursday (today) at the residence by the Rev. Gallie Isaac. Burial will be in the Stratton Cemetery at Torchlight. Mr. Fugitt was born May 3, 1890, at Louisa, route 1, a son of Millard Fugitt and the late Mrs. Katherine Patrick Fugitt. Survivors include the father, of Louisa route 1, the widow, Mrs. Ethel Fugitt, five daughters, Mrs. Ed McKenzie and Mrs. Taylor York, Torchlight and Pauline, Daisy Lee and Betty Fugitt, at home; five sons, Manley Fugitt of Cleveland, OH, and Millard, Home, Guy and Ralph, at home; three sisters, Mrs. Marian Cochran of Louisa route 1, Mrs. Robert Judd of Beaver Creek, KY and Mrs. Willie York of Torchlight and three brothers, Sampson and William Fugitt of Louisa route 1 and Sherrill Fugitt of Betsy Layne, KY. HAGAMAN, Frank L.

1891-1956

Frank L. Hagaman, 65, a prominent and well-beloved citizen of 108 Wallace Street, Louisa, succumbed Sunday at 10:45 p.m. at his home after an illness of two months, suffering from a heart condition. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Methodist Church in Louisa, by the Rev. A. J. Roberts. Burial was made in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland. Mr. Hagaman had been agent for the bulk station of the Standard Oil Co., here for 14 years. Before that he was employed for 23 years as a lease foreman for the South Penn Oil Co. He was born January 23, 1891, at Farmers, KY, a son of the late James and America Carey Hagaman, and had lived in Louisa for 36 years. Mr. Hagaman was a faithful and active member of the First Methodist Church for 36 years. He was married 40 years ago to the former Ethel Louella Fowler, who survives. Additional survivors include two sons, John Hagaman of Ashland, and George Hagaman of Louisa; one sister, Mrs. J. B. Calvert, Sr., of Morehead, KY; three brothers, George Hagaman of Lynchburg, VA and Sherman and Bert Hagaman of Gauley Bridge, WV; and 5 grandchildren. HOPSON, Thomas J.

1879-1956

The Rev. Thomas J. Hopson, 76, former pastor of the Louisa Methodist Church, of 4201 Earl Street, Ashland, KY, a retired Methodist minister, died Tuesday in a Cincinnati hospital after a two months illness. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday (today) at 2 p.m. at the John Steen Funeral Home, Ashland, by the Rev. Frank C. King, pastor of First Methodist Church of Ashland. Burial will be in the Ashland Cemetery. Mr. Hopson moved to Ashland after his retirement six years ago. He held pastorates in West Virginia and Kentucky for 45 years. He was a graduate of Morris Harvey College. He was born at East Point, Johnson County, KY, November 13, 1879, the son of the late William L. and Delilah Music Hopson. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Margaret Walters Hopson; two sons, Carl D. Hopson, of Ashland, and Thomas J. Hopson, Jr., of South Fort Mitchell, KY; four daughters, Mrs. Kester Epling of Charleston, WV, Mrs. William Bailey of Lexington, KY, Mrs. Paul Browning of Falmouth, KY and Mrs. Loren Methany of Olney, IL; two brothers, William Hopson of Wheeling, WV and G. MARCUM, Viola

A prominent Fort Gay woman, who suffered severe burns at her home Wednesday afternoon of last week, died in a Huntington hospital at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, February 9. The victim was identified as Mrs. Viola Marcum, 66. An Attending physician said about 80 percent of the woman's body was burned. She suffered second and third degree burns. Attendants at the Curtright Funeral Home, here, said they were told the victim's dress caught fire from a gas heater in the home. The mishap occurred about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Meanwhile, Mrs. Alice Burnett, a daughter of the dead woman, suffered third degree burns of the hands and arms in an attempt to save her mother. Mrs. Burnett was treated at Riverview Hospital in Louisa and released. She was at her mother's bedside at St. Mary's Hospital, Thursday. Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Fort Gay Baptist Church with the Rev. Burl Taylor officiating. Burial was made in the Pratt Cemetery. Her husband, Enos Marcum died in 1943. Surviving in addition to Mrs. Burnett are two other daughters, Mrs. Oscar Crabtree of Fort Gay and Mrs. Everett Christian of Rittman, OH; two sons, Arthur and James Marcum of Columbus, OH and 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. MILES, Earl

1921-1956

Earl Miles age 34 years, formerly of Louisa, was bound dead Sunday afternoon in his room at 216 North Eighth Street, Richmond, IN. Officials set the time of death January 28, 1956 and the cause asphyxiation. The deceased had been employed by the C & O Railway Company for the past nine years as a welder. He was born in Louisa, December 29, 1921, a son of Mrs. Hattie Lou Pigg Miles and the late Jerome Miles. He was a veteran of World War II. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon, 2 p.m. at the Louisa Freewill Baptist Church with the pastor, the Rev. William W. Moore, officiating. Interment was made in Pine Hill Cemetery. The body was taken to the church one hour preceding the funeral, from the Curtright Funeral Home, where it had remained since arrival here Tuesday morning. Survivors include two children, Earl Willis and Jerry Stephen Miles, of Detroit, MI; the mother, Mrs. Hattie Lou Miles, Columbus, OH; one sister, Mrs. Eugene Boyd, Columbus, and one brother, Marvin Miles, Indianapolis, IN. Joseph C. Miller, 56, of Louisa route 1, (Meades Branch), died at 9:10 p.m. Sunday night at his home following an illness of three years. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Meades Branch Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Arlie Blackburn officiating. Burial was made in the Miller Cemetery. Mr. Miller was born May 20, 1899, at Louisa route 1, a son of the late Albert H. and Trinvilla Johnson Miller. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Leo Meade of Louisa and three brothers, Noah, W. H. and Benjamin F. Miller of Columbus, OH. MOORE, Laura (Church)

Mrs. Laura Ann Church Moore, 76, of Fallsburg, KY, (Long Branch), died at her home at 8:15 p.m. Friday of last week after an illness of two weeks. She was born at Buchanan, KY, July 18, 1878, a daughter of the late William and Mary Ann French Church. Her husband, the Rev. Martin Moore, died in September 1954. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. from the residence. The Rev. John Moore, the Rev. Felix Skaggs and the Rev. Muncey Cassidy officiated and burial was made in the family cemetery. Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Ida Austin of Ashland, and a number of nieces and nephews. ROBERTSON, Larry Joe and Jerry Lynn

1956-1956

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Oak Grove Baptist Church, Fort Gay, route 2, for Larry Joe and Jerry Lynn Robertson, infant twin sons, of Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Robertson of Fort Gay, route 2 who died Sunday in a Louisa hospital. The funeral rites were conducted by the Rev. Grant Raines. Burial was made in Robertson Cemetery. ROMANS, Cecil E.

1873-1956

Dr. Cecil Everett Romans, 82, native and lifelong resident of Fort Gay, WV, died at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday after an extended illness. Dr. Romans, a graduate of the Cincinnati Dental College, had practiced dentistry in Fort Gay during his entire professional career with the exception of one year in Huntington, WV, before his retirement. He was born October 17,1 873, a son of the late John and Tillie Steele Romans. He was married in 1898 to Miss Bertha Wellman who survives. Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. from the Fort Gay Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Andrews, pastor of the First Christian Church, Louisa, and the Rev. Burl Taylor, pastor of the Fort Gay Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be made in the Fort Gay Cemetery. Surviving in addition to the widow, are a daughter, Mrs. G. F. Workman of Cleveland, OH; two sons, Everett B . of Crawley, WV and Ernest R. of Wayne, WV; two half sisters, Mrs. Effie Beavers of Ocala, FL and Miss Lillie Frazier of Fort Gay; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. WITT, Mack

Mack Witt, 61, of Fort Gay, WV, died in a Louisa hospital at 9:55 p.m. Thursday of last week after having suffered a heart attack at his home early Thursday morning. He was born at Detroit, MI, February 24, 1895, where he lived for 50 years and had lived at Fort Gay for the pat 11 years. He was owner and operator of a taxi service. He was a member of the Lutheran Church, the W. O. Johnson Post 89 of the American Legion. He was a veteran of World War I. The body was removed from the Curtright Funeral Home to the residence Saturday morning. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in the Fort Gay Methodist Church with the Rev. Marcus Earp officiating. Burial was made in the Fort Gay Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, one foster daughter, Mrs. Reuben Copley of Rittman, OH, five sisters, Mrs. Michael Kaninski of Detroit, Mrs. Norman Prunean, Atlanta, MI, Mrs. Wayne Garlick, Wayne, MI, Mrs. Roy Allen and Mrs. Martin Allen of Belleville, MI; four brothers, Stanley of Detroit, Mike, Mt. WURTS, Emma (Thompson)

Mrs. Emma Thompson Wurts, of 1613 Lexington Avenue, Ashland, died at her home at 7 a.m. Tuesday, January 24, following a brief illness. She was born at Webbville, KY, a daughter of the late Martin and Elizabeth Webb Thompson. she was a member of the First Baptist Church and was active in church organizations and was president of the Women's Missionary Union of the Greenup Baptist Association. She was associated in business with her husband, Dr. C. F. Wurts prior to his death in April 1954. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Joe Hicks of Ashland, Mrs. W. R. ALLEY, Luke S.

1873-1956

Funeral services for Luke S. Alley, 82, prominent resident of route 4, Louisa, succumbed Friday at 1:10 p.m. were conducted Sunday at 11 a.m. at Myrtle Chapel, route 4, with the Rev. Polk Pial, of Huntington, officiating. Burial was made in the family cemetery near the residence Mr. Alley was born in Pike County, a son of the late Peter and Sarah Stanley Alley. He had lived here 47 years and had operated the L. S. Alley Dairy for 33 years. He was a member of the Christian Church in Pike County, but for many years had worked untiringly in the Union Church at Myrtle Chapel. He served as Sunday School superintendent and was a trustee of the church there for many years, and helped very generously to support it. But he remained faithful to the church of his faith, and though not active in church work here in the Louisa First Christian Church, he gave generously to its support. He wa instrumental in organizing the first farm bureau here, and was a member at the time of his death. Surviving are the wife, Mrs. Angeline Smith Alley; five daughters, Mrs. Ezra Adkins of Branchland, WV, Mrs. Jay Piost, Shelbyville, KY, Mrs. Claude B. Diamond, Columbus, OH, Mrs. J. D. Thompson, Thurmond, NC, and Mrs. Bennie Fugate, at home; two sons, Thomas Alley of Pikeville, KY and Lester Alley, of route 4, Louisa; one sister, Mrs. Sarah Deskins of Borderland, WV; two brothers, George Alley of Williamson, WV and H. B. Alley of Borderland, 18 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. The body was taken from the Young Funeral Home to the church where it remained for one hour preceding the funeral. William R. Auxier, 90, of Louisa, a retired farmer and lumber dealer, died at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday of last week in a Louisa hospital after an illness of six weeks. Mr. Auxier was born at East Point, KY, August 4, 1865, a son of the late Samuel and Jane Wellman Auxier. He had been a member of the Methodist Church for 50 years. Before moving to Lawrence County eight years ago, Mr. Auxier had lived in Johnson and Lewis Counties. His wife, Mrs. Eliza Burgess Miller Auxier, died in 1937. Funeral services were conducted Friday 1:30 p.m. at the Curtright Funeral Home with the Rev. Felix Skaggs, pastor of the Christian Baptist Church officiating. Burial was made in the Miller Cemetery route 1, Louisa. Survivors include one son, C. R. Mrs. Lutie Alice Booth, 75, a well-known and beloved Fort Gay resident, passed away Sunday in a Louisa hospital after an illness of about one week. Mrs. Booth was born at Fort Gay, August 27, 1880. She was a daughter of the late Amon C. and Pherby Roberts McComas. Funeral rites were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Fort Gay Baptist Church with the Rev. Burl Taylor officiating. Burial was made in the Fort Gay Cemetery. Survivors include the husband, Andrew J. Booth, a son by a former marriage, Cecil Watts, of Fort Gay, a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Richardson, of Hawthorne, CA; a brother, the Rev. John C. McComas of Fort Gay; two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The body was removed from the Young Funeral Home to the church to lie in state one hour preceding funeral time. Ora Borders, 57, formerly of Ulysses, Kentucky, died March 29, 4:30 a.m. at 6345 South High St., Columbus, OH.  Death came suddenly from a heart attack.  He had been working at Riverside Motel, Dublin, OH for about eight months.  Mr. Borders was born February 2, 1899, at Ulysses, KY, a son of the late Anderson and Geneva Burton Borders.  His wife was Ada Puckett Borders, to who he had been married for thirty-eight years.  He was a member of the Chandlersville Masonic Lodge, No. 868. Funeral services will be held at the Walnut Grove Freewill Baptist Church, Ulysses, Friday March 23 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Grover Bevins and the Rev. Millard VanHoose officiating.  Burial will be made in the Borders Cemetery at Ulysses. The body was taken from the Curtright Funeral Home here to the residence Wednesday at 5 p.m.  Surviving are the wife; three sisters, Mrs. Chas. BURTON, Luther A.

Luther A. Burton, 64, prominent native of Blaine, KY and a former cashier of the Blaine bank, who had resided in Louisa for the past few years, died suddenly Thursday of last week as he was preparing to leave his office at the Farmers' Livestock building here, where he was employed as bookkeeper. His death was attributed to a heart attack. Mr. Burton was born January 8, 1892, a son of the late Judge Samuel and Ellen York Burton. He was formerly a member of the staff of teachers for Lawrence County schools, and later became cashier of the Bank of Blaine, and served in that capacity for 23 years. He resigned his position with the bank and for a while was connected with the Burton Realty Company, Ashland, before coming to Louisa. He was a member of the Christian Church of Blaine and of the Jake Rice Masonic Lodge, No . 606, Blaine. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Julia Grubb Burton; two sons, Charles Burton, at home, and Scott Burton, Ashland, KY, two sisters, Mrs. J. D. Sturgill and Mrs. G. N. Wellman, of Ashland and one brother, Dr. C. C. Burton, West Liberty, KY. The body remained at the Young Funeral Home where funeral rites were conducted at 2 pm Saturday with the Rev. W. W. BUTLER, Emma (Conley)

Mrs. Emma Conley Butler, 90, one of Louisa's oldest and most beloved women, succumbed at 12:45 Saturday morning at the Riverview hospital. Her death was attributed to a cerebral hemorrhage which she had suffered a few days prior to her death. Mrs. Butler, a former resident of Paintsville, KY, had lived with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Butler in Louisa, since the death of her husband, Colfax "Dick" Butler, ten years ago. The deceased was born in Paintsville, March 5, 1866, a daughter of the late Hiram E. and Clorinda Rice Conley. She was the only daughter, and the last survivor in a family of eleven children. Three of the sons were pioneer Baptist ministers. Mrs. Butler had been a devout member of the Baptist Church for 70 years. Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 P M Sunday at the First Christian Church with the Rev. William W. Moore officiating. Burial was in the Cyrus Cemetery, Route 3, Louisa. Survivors include the son, John Butler, and several nieces and nephews. Her only daughter preceded her in death a few years ago. Mrs. Nora Barricks Cardwell, 45, of Fort Gay, WV, died at her home at 5:40 p.m. Saturday. She had resided in Fort Gay 22 years. Mrs. Cardwell was born February 15, 1911 in Carter County, a daughter of the late Bert and Malinda Stanley Barricks. She was married 24 years ago to John Howard Cardwell, who survives. Mrs. Cardwell was employed as a clerk in the McQueen Grocery Store. She was a member of the Baptist Church 17 years. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at the Fort Gay Baptist Church with the Rev. Carvel Grant and the Rev. Buell Taylor officiating. Burial was made in the Billups Gap Cemetery. Surviving are the husband, two daughters, Mrs. William Haddaway, of Dunbar, WV and Miss Izetta Jane Cardwell at home; two sons, Joseph Howard and John Franklin Cardwell, both at home; eight sisters, Mrs. Joe Prichard of Rush, KY, Mrs. Willie White, Mrs. James Nesbett, Mrs. Leslie Cox, Mrs. Jack Christian, Mrs. Dewey Flutz, all of Morehead, KY, Mrs. Ann Abbott of Olive Hill, KY and Mrs. Maggie Click, of Haldeman, KY; two brothers, Charlie Barricks of Morehead and Henry Barricks of Chicago and one granddaughter, Jane Ellen Haddaway. William David Castle, 74, of Calf Creek, KY, a retired employee of the N & W Railway Co., succumbed in a local hospital Wednesday, March 14, after an illness of several years. Mr. Castle was born at Inez, KY, January 1, 1882, a son of the late Richard and Hester Fitzpatrick Castle. About 50 years ago he moved to Calf Creek, where he had since lived. He was a member of the United Baptist Church for many years. He is survived by his wife, Mary Fluty Castle; two sons, Richard Castle of Warfield, KY and Laban T. Castle of Calf Creek; five daughters, Mrs. Hester Hall, Williamson, WV, Mrs. Elsie New, Fort Gay, WV, Mrs. Blanche Stewart, Columbus, OH, Mrs. Jacqueline Horn, Columbus, OH and Mrs. Pauline Conn, of Crum, WV. Also surviving are one brother, Joshua Castle, Inez, KY and one sister, Mrs. Minnie Pack of Job, KY. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at the family residence, with the Rev. Ballard Copley and Rev. Homer Mills officiating. John Chapman, 89, died at the home of Leander Miller on Mead's Branch at 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, after an illness of six months. He was a retired farmer and had resided at the Miller residence for the past 25 years. He was born in Lawrence county, March 15, 1867, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Chapman. He was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. Funeral services were conducted Friday at 1 p.m. from the Miller residence. The Rev. Willie Moore officiated, and burial was made in the Miller Cemetery. The body was removed from the Curtright Funeral Home to the Miller residence on Wednesday. Surviving are one step-brother, Henry Miller, route 1, Louisa, one niece, Mrs. Charlie Kise, route 1, Louisa, and two nephews, Gordon Chapman, Springfield, OH and Price Chapman of South Charleston, OH.   1. W. Dawson, 80, died from a heart attack after suffering 17 days at 4 p.m. Sunday at his residence, route 1, Fort Gay, WV. A lifetime Fort Gay resident, he was born in Pike County, KY, a son of the late John R. and Mary Ellen Fyffe Dawson. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the residence by the Rev. Burl Taylor, pastor of the Fort Gay Baptist Church. Burial was made in the Dawson Cemetery. The body was taken to the residence from the Curtright Funeral Home in Louisa. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Julia Doss Dawson, whom he married 45 years ago; one daughter, Miss Corene Dawson at home; one son, J. R. EDWARDS, Edith (Nickells)

1875-1956

Mrs. Edith Edwards, 80, Blaine, KY, died Wednesday of last week at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Russell Sparks of Minford, OH. Mrs. Edwards had been ill since suffering a shoulder fracture February 16. Before moving to her daughter's home in February, she had been a life-long resident of Blaine. She was born in Johnson County, KY, April 4, 1875, a daughter of Miles and Mary Katherine Salyers Nickells. She was married to Winfield Scott Edwards, who preceded her in death March 5, 1949. She was a faithful member of the Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, Charles M. Edwards of Danville, KY; six daughters, Mrs. Henry Griffith of Blaine, Mrs. W. M. Norris, Salt Lick, KY, Mrs. R. L. Parker, Frankfort, KY, Mrs. Roberta Barnett, San Francisco, CA, Mrs. Hermie Nickols, West Portsmouth, OH, and Mrs. Sparks; a brother, W. S. Nickells of Saratoga, TX; 26 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Friday, March 17, at 2 p.m. at the Blaine Church of God, with the Rev. Willie Moore, and Rev. EVANS, Joe Ashby

Joe Ashby Evans, 75, retired civil engineer, who helped construct the Panama Canal, died Saturday at his home, Mt. Sterling, KY, at 2:30 p.m. He was the father of Mrs. M.S. Rice of this city. Mr. Evans was employed on the canal construction project from the time it was started until it was completed. He also worked on projects in South America. A native of Richmond, KY, he had resided in Mt. Sterling for 38 years and for a number of years operated the Mt. Sterling Laundry with his brother O. C. Evans. He later was  connected with the used construction equipment farm of Evans and Evans. He was a member of Lodge No. 23, F and AM; a 32nd degree Mason, and a member of the First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Minnie W. Evans, two sons, Joe A. Evans, Jr., and Owenton C. Evans, Mt. Sterling; two daughters, Mrs. Frank Sower, Frankfort and Mrs. M. S. Rice, Louisa; a sister, Mrs. T. H. Pickels, Mr. Sterling and nine grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Mitchell-Douglas Funeral Home by the Rev. Harry G. Mrs. Katheryn Lorraine Hall, 34, of Clifford, KY, died at 1:45 a.m. Sunday in a Huntington hospital after an illness of one week. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Clifford High School Gymnasium. The Rev. Willie W. Moore officiated, and burial was made in the Maynard Cemetery on Louisa, route 2. Mrs. Hall was born November 2, 1921 at Glenhayes, WV, a daughter of James and Enid Kidd Maynard of Clifford. She was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are the husband, George Leon Hall; three daughters, Sharon Joy, Gaynell and Shelia Anita Hall; at home; three sons, Bruce Leon, Bennie Dale, and Guy Roy Hall, at home; the parents, two sisters, Mrs. Douglas D. Craig of Mealey, WV and Miss Loretta Maynard of Clifford; five brothers, Charles Maynard of Mansfield, OH, Harold Maynard of Columbus, OH, Lucian, Ronnie and Calvin Maynard of Clifford. HAMMOND, Jimmy Ray

1932-1956

Two young fathers, former residents of Louisa, were killed and a third man seriously injured early Saturday, when their car crashed into an oncoming truck on a curve on U. S. Route 23, near Columbus, OH, where they resided. The dead are Roscoe N. Moore, 24, of 638 North High Street, Columbus, who died at the scene of the accident, and Jimmy Ray Hammond, 23, of 251 Betz Road, who died later at the Mercy Hospital, Columbus. Lucian Moore, 33, Columbus, passenger in the car, was hospitalized, but was reported by attaches of the University Hospital, Columbus, to be in fair condition. State Highway Patrolman, J. L. Cooper, of Circleville, who reported the accident, said that the car, driven by the young men  and headed north, struck a southbound truck on a curve as the driver of the truck swerved it toward the shoulder of the road to avoid collision. Patrolman Cooper said that Roscoe Moore, apparently the driver, was thrown 48 feet from the car. He died of a crushed chest. Both Hammond and Lucien Moore were trapped in partly opened right hand doors of the auto, and had to be pried free. Hammond was taken to Mercy Hospital, died of a fractured skull, crushed chest and multiple lacerations.

 

Hammond, an attendant at the Oak and 4th Pure Oil Station, Columbus, was the son of Jarrett and Wilma Maynard Hammond of Louisa, KY. He was born November 3, 1932, at Clifford, KY. Survivors in addition to the parents, include the wife, Mrs. Alberta Hall Hammond; two sons, Johnny and Dannie, at home; a sister, Mrs. David Bentley of Louisa, a brother, Dan J. Hammond of Columbus and a grandmother, Mrs. Nannie Hammond of Clifford.

 

Mr. Moore was the son of Walter and Genia Miller Moore of Adams, KY. He was a steel worker. Survivors in addition to the parents, are his wife, Betty Ball Moore; a son, Larry, 6 months, a sister, Miss Della Mae Moore of Adams; four brothers, Lace and Homer Moore of Adams, Calvin Moore of Johnstown, OH, and Ransom Moore, with the Army at Fort Hood, TX; a grandfather, Jim Miller of Piketon, OH and a grandmother, Mrs. Mae Thompson of Adams.

 

Funeral services for Hammond were conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Friendship Church at Clifford with the Rev. Ray Fluty and the Rev. Sammy Branham officiating. Burial was made in the family cemetery at Clifford.

 

Funeral services for Moore were conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Spencer Church at Norris, KY, with the Rev. Freddie see and the Rev. Gallie Isaac officiating. Burial was made in the Judd Cemetery. The Young Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Big Sandy News, March 1, 1956

 

HAYES, Elijah

Elijah (Lige) Hayes, 84, of Mechanicsburg, OH, died there at 8:45 p.m. Monday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Mont Ball. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m.  at the Freewill Baptist at Charley, KY. The Rev. William Moore and the Rev. Arlie Blackburn officiated and burial was made in the Hayes Cemetery at Charley. The body was at the Young Funeral Home and was taken to the church to lie in state one hour preceding the funeral services. Mr. Hayes was born April 12, 1871, at Charley, a son of the late Basil and Ardelia Bolling Hayes. He was one of 28 children. He had been a member of the Freewill Baptist Church for 15 years. Additional survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Ed Blair of Mechanicsburg, Mrs. Robert Terry of London, OH, Mrs. Everett Young of Ashland, KY, Mrs. Ida Green of Columbus, OH and Mrs. Hershell Williams of Logan, WV; a son, Roy Hayes of Mechanicsburg; a brother, Matt Hayes of Columbus, 30 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. JOHNSON, Mary Elizabeth (Hinkle)

1875-1956

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Johnson, 80, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Shirley Blackburn at 5:40 p.m. Thursday of last week. She had been ill a year. Mrs. Johnson formerly resided at Meades Branch on route 1, Louisa but had resided with her daughter here 11 years. Mrs. Johnson was born at Meades Branch, October 10, 1875, a daughter of the late Allen and Betty Spencer Hinkle. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Young Funeral Home here with the Rev. Charles Perry and the Rev. Jay Hinkle officiating. Burial was made in the family cemetery at Meades Branch. Mrs. Johnson had been a member of the Freewill Baptist Church since childhood. Her husband, Douglas, died in June 1929. Besides Mrs. Blackburn, Mrs. Johnson is survived by two other daughters, Mrs. T. M. Arrington of Russell, KY and Mrs. Emma Gose of Detroit; one son, Mont Johnson of Huntington, 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Hampton Maynard, 85, retired farmer of Clifford, KY, died of a heart attach at 12:30 a.m. Monday in a Louisa hospital. He was born on August 9, 1871, at Clifford, KY, a son of the late Elijah and Minerva Frazier Maynard. He was a member of the United Baptist Church at Clifford for 51 years and had served as a deacon since 1913. Funeral services will be conduced at 1 p.m. Thursday (today) at the Mt. Olive Church by the Rv. C. E. Counts, the Rev. H. F. Fry, the Rev. George Atkins, and the Rev. Andrew Perry. Burial will be in the Maynard Cemetery at Clifford. His wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Sammons Maynard died in 1940. Surviving are three daughters, (the rest is unreadable) Big Sandy News, March 1, 1956

Graveside rites were conducted Friday at 2 p.m. for John Randall Michael, infant son of Ralph C. and Margaret Ann Wellman Michael, who died at St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington, Thursday of last week. The parents are former resident of Fort Gay, WV, who now reside in Huntington. The Rev. Burl Taylor, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Fort Gay, officiated and interment was made in the Wellman Cemetery, Route 1, Fort Gay, under the direction of the Young Funeral Home of Louisa. MOORE, Farris

1889-1956

Farris Moore, 86, of Mattie, KY, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Hunter, 114 E. Lock Avenue, Louisa, Tuesday, March 13, at 7:20 a.m. after an illness of about a year. He had lived in Louisa about two years. Mr. Moore was born at Adams, KY, July 6, 1889, the son of the late Joseph and Trinvillie Lester Moore. His wife, Mrs. Nola Cordle Moore died August 1954. Mr. Moore had been a farmer all his life. Funeral services will be held (today) Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Cordell Freewill Baptist Church, with Rev. W. S. Boggs and Rev. Gallie Isaac officiating. Burial will be in the Cordle Cemetery on Brushy Creek. The body was taken from the Curtright Funeral Home Wednesday at 2 p.m. to the home of the daughter, Mrs. Hunter. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Hunter, Louisa, and Mrs. Coburn Rigsby of Catlettsburg, two sons, Mitchell of Indianapolis, IN and Russell of Columbus, OH; two sisters, Mrs. Jay Smith, Catlettsburg and Mrs. Theodore Hicks, Dayton, OH; one brother, Jim Moore, Louisa,, route 1, and two grandchildren and one great grandchild. MOORE, Rebecca (Mullins)

1872-1956

Mrs. Rebecca Moore, 84, died Sunday at her residence here after an illness of six weeks. A lifetime Louisa resident, she was born at Inez, KY, on June 1872, a daughter of the late Ambrose and Tabitha Maynard Mullins. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Free Will Baptist Church in Louisa by the Rev. Willie W. Moore and the Rev. W. S. Boggs. Burial was made in the family cemetery, route 4, Louisa. A member of the Freewill Baptist Church for 10 years, she was the wife of Link Moore, who died on January 13, 1953. The body was taken to her home Monday afternoon from the Young Funeral Home. Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. Oliver Newsom of Catlettsburg, KY, Mrs. Allen Lambert of Fallsburg, KY, Mrs. Levisa Diamond of Boonville, Ark., Mrs. Angeline Bradley of Louisa, Mrs. Lester Alley of route 4, Louisa and Mrs. W. D. Ford of St. Albans, WV; four sons, Roscoe of Dade City, FL, Samuel B. and McKinley of Anchorage, KY, and Andrew of Albany, OH, and 42 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. MOORE, Roscoe

Two young fathers, former residents of Louisa, were killed and a third man seriously injured early Saturday, when their car crashed into an oncoming truck on a curve on U. S. Route 23, near Columbus, OH, where they resided. The dead are Roscoe N. Moore, 24, of 638 North High Street, Columbus, who died at the scene of the accident, and Jimmy Ray Hammond, 23, of 251 Betz Road, who died later at the Mercy Hospital, Columbus. Lucian Moore, 33, Columbus, passenger in the car, was hospitalized, but was reported by attaches of the University Hospital, Columbus, to be in fair condition. State Highway Patrolman, J. L. Cooper, of Circleville, who reported the accident, said that the car, driven by the young men  and headed north, struck a southbound truck on a curve as the driver of the truck swerved it toward the shoulder of the road to avoid collision. Patrolman Cooper said that Roscoe Moore, apparently the driver, was thrown 48 feet from the car. He died of a crushed chest. Both Hammond and Lucien Moore were trapped in partly opened right hand doors of the auto, and had to be pried free. Hammond was taken to Mercy Hospital, died of a fractured skull, crushed chest and multiple lacerations.

 

Hammond, an attendant at the Oak and 4th Pure Oil Station, Columbus, was the son of Jarrett and Wilma Maynard Hammond of Louisa, KY. He was born November 3, 1932, at Clifford, KY. Survivors in addition to the parents, include the wife, Mrs. Alberta Hall Hammond; two sons, Johnny and Dannie, at home; a sister, Mrs. David Bentley of Louisa, a brother, Dan J. Hammond of Columbus and a grandmother, Mrs. Nannie Hammond of Clifford.

 

Mr. Moore was the son of Walter and Genia Miller Moore of Adams, KY. He was a steel worker. Survivors in addition to the parents, are his wife, Betty Ball Moore; a son, Larry, 6 months, a sister, Miss Della Mae Moore of Adams; four brothers, Lace and Homer Moore of Adams, Calvin Moore of Johnstown, OH, and Ransom Moore, with the Army at Fort Hood, TX; a grandfather, Jim Miller of Piketon, OH and a grandmother, Mrs. Mae Thompson of Adams.

 

Funeral services for Hammond were conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Friendship Church at Clifford with the Rev. Ray Fluty and the Rev. Sammy Branham officiating. Burial was made in the family cemetery at Clifford.

 

Funeral services for Moore were conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Spencer Church at Norris, KY, with the Rev. Freddie see and the Rev. Gallie Isaac officiating. Burial was made in the Judd Cemetery. The Young Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Big Sandy News, March 1, 1956

 

 

REED, Pauline (Harris)

1865-1956

Mrs. Pauline (Aunt Pline) Harris Reed, 90, Louisa's oldest and beloved negro resident, succumbed at 9:30 a.m. Monday, at her home, following an illness of five months. "Aunt Pline" as she was affectionately known, was born August 13, 1865. In speaking of her age to friends, she always dated it by the assassination of President Lincoln. She was born in August following the assassination in April, in Pike County, KY, which she left in 1869, coming to Louisa with her mother, Mrs. Mary Harris, a former slave. She and her mother walked part of the way, caught rides in ox carts and push boats. At an early age she married the Rev. Samuel Reed, a circuit riding preacher, and barber, who later became the first pastor of the St. James Methodist Church here, of which Mrs. Reed, was a faithful member for 75 years. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday from the St. James Methodist Church, with the Rev. Cecil Hill of Huntington, a former pastor of the church here, officiating. Burial was made in the Beaire Cemetery, Fort Gay, WV. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Charles Justice and Mrs. Neva Ewing of Columbus, OH; a son, Cecil Reed of Pikeville, KY; 23 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. The body was remained at the Curtright Funeral Home until one hour preceding funeral time, when it was removed to the church to lie in state until funeral hour. Big Sandy News, March 1, 1956

 

SAVAGE, Dee

Dee Savage, 66, of Louisa route 4, died Saturday morning in a Huntington hospital. Funeral services were conducted at the Princess, KY Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Monday with the Rev. Bob Enkie officiating. Burial was made in the Coalton Cemetery. Surviving are: three daughters, Mrs. Dixie Purdue, Mrs. Erma Gillispie and Mrs. Ellen Ray, all of Huntington; three step daughters, Mrs. Ermalou Burton of Rush, KY, Mrs. Anna Howard and Mrs. Violet Grudnler, both of Baltimore, MD. Two stepsons, Elmer Thornsbury, of Stone, KY and Ellis Thornsbury of Rush, KY; three sisters, Mrs. Mura Holbrook, Mrs. Sopha Taylor and Mrs. Effie Thornsbury, all of Louisa; three brothers, Wirt and John of Louisa, and Babe of Rush, KY; one grandchild and two great grandchildren, also survive. SKAGGS, Harmon

1891-1956

Harmon Skaggs, 64, of Terryville, died at 8 p.m. Sunday night in a Louisa hospital following an illness of six months. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the home of a niece, Mrs. Nannie Skaggs, Terryville. Burial was made in the family cemetery there. Mr. Skaggs was born July 12, 1891, a son of the late James H. and Elizabeth Lester Skaggs. He was a member of the Christian Church. Additional survivors include a sister, Mrs. Cora Fannin of Simon, ID and a brother, Rufus Skaggs of Garrison, KY.   1. C. Adams, 95, a retired farmer, died Sunday at 2:40 p.m. at the home of a son in law, Lawrence Gillum, route 1, Rush, KY after an extended illness. Mr. Adams was born March 5,1 861, in Lawrence County, a son of the late Fisher and Elizabeth Griffith Adams. He had resided in Boyd County for ten years and was a member of the Wilson Creek Baptist Church. Surviving are one son, Ernest Adams of Chillicothe, OH, one daughter, Mrs. Mattie Henry of Coal Grove, OH; three brothers, John Quincy Adams of Olive Hill, George Adams of Milton, WV and William Adams of Detroit, MI. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Wilson Creek Baptist Church on route 60. the Rev. Dan Newsome officiated and burial was made in the Gillum Cemetery on Mile Branch. Bill H. Burgess, 87, of Louisa route 1, died at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, in a Louisa hospital following an illness of two years. Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Curtright Funeral Home with the Rev. J. C. Hager officiating. Burial was made in the Beaire Cemetery at Fort Gay. Mr. Burgess, a retired farmer, was born on July 21, 1868, at Route 1, Louisa, a son of the late William and Martha Garred Burgess. He was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church. CURRIN, J. M.

1891-1956

Mr. J. M. Currin, 64, prominent business man of Louisville, KY, died Tuesday, 6:45 p.m. at the Louisa General Hospital from a heart attack he suffered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James O. Watson, where he and his wife and daughter, Miss Mary Elizabeth, had arrived on Monday for a visit in the Watson home while en route to Fairmont, WV, their former home. Mr. Currin, a native of Scotland Neck, NC, was born July 31, 1891, a son of the late Eugene G. and Lu Randolph Currin. He was a director of the Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corporation, Louisville, for the past thirty years, retiring January 1, 1954. He was a Lieutenant in the U. S. Army in World War I and had been a lifelong member of the Baptist Church. His widow, Mary Watson Currin, to whom he had been married 25 years, is a sister of Mr. James O. Watson, Louisa. The body was removed from the Curtright Funeral Home Wednesday to the McIssac Funeral Home, Fairmont, where funeral rites will be conducted Thursday at 4 p.m. with the Rev. M. C. Johnson officiating. Interment will be made in the Woodland Cemetery, Fairmont. Survivors include the widow; two daughters, Mrs. Charles I. Mrs. Clestia Jane Denney, 29, of Columbus, OH, died at 6:15 a.m. Monday at her home. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Dry Ridge Church by the Rev. S. B. Ball. Burial will be in Jordan Cemetery. Mrs. Denney was born at Adams, KY, a daughter of Dave and Lulu Moore Pack. She was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Charles Denney; two sons, two daughters, the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Pack of Adams; two sisters, Mrs. Ray Hayes and Mrs. John Roberts, both of Columbus; and two brothers, Bert and Elwood Pack of Columbus. Funeral services for Martin V. Dixon, 88, of Ellen, who died Wednesday of last week, were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Low Gap Church at Ellen by the Rev. Lucian Mounts of South Vienna, OH. Burial was made in the Carter Cemetery at Ellen. The body was at the Young Funeral Home here. Mr. Dixon, a retired farmer, was born August 7, 1867, at Ellen, a son of the late Martin V. and Angeline Hayes Dixon. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Rosie V. Survivors include the parents, one brother, Billie Eugene, at home; the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Dalter Davis of route 1, Fort Gay. GAMBILL, Arbie L.

Arbie L. Gambill, 70, a native of Blevins, KY, passed away April 5, at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Edgar Boggs of Pickerington, OH, where he had been visiting for some time. Mr. Gambill had spent his entire life at Blevins, except for the past year or so, when he and his wife, the former Miss Cynthia Sparks, went to Jackson, KY to reside after the old "N. O. Gambill" home, where they lived, was consumed by fire. He was a retired farmer. Survivors include the wife; three daughters, Mrs. Okie Boggs, Ashland, KY, Mrs. Estill Slone, Jackson, KY, Mrs. Talmadge Johnson, Groversport, OH; three sons, Olga Gambill, Pickerington, OH, Ora Gambill, Jackson, KY and Arbie E. HAYES, L. Scott

1882-1956

Dr. L. Scott Hayes, 72, prominent Louisa  physician, succumbed Sunday morning, April 22 at 10:15 a.m. after an illness of six months, at the Louisa General Hospital, which he founded more than 25 years ago. Dr. Hayes was born September 27l 1882, at Adams, KY, a son of the late Martin R. and Mary Dean Hayes. He was a graduate of the Kentucky School of Medicine, now the School of Medicine, University of Louisville. He was a veteran of World War I serving as captain in the U. S. Army. In addition to his heavy duties as a physician and surgeon, Dr. Hayes found time for hobbies and also time for an invaluable service to the community. He not only served as head of several civic and fraternal organizations, but w3as also mayor of Louisa for a term of four years. He was Past Master of Apperson Lodge 96?, F & AM, Past President of the Louisa Rotary Club, Past Commander of the W. O. Johnson Post 89? Of the American Legion and at the time of his death he was secretary of the Lawrence County Medical Society. He was president of the Lawrence County Board of Health, and was a member of the Kentucky State Medical Society. The body remained at the Young Funeral Home where funeral rites were conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. C. L. Neff and Rev. Charles Perry officiating. Interment was made in Pine Hill Cemetery. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Bertha Spencer Hayes, to whom he was married forty-eight years ago, two daughters, Mrs. T. W. Greer, of Route 4, Louisa, and Mrs. J. W. HOLBROOK, Josephine (Thompson)

Mrs. Josephine Holbrook, 87, of route 1, Webbville, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Perry, in Grove City, OH at 12:20 a.m. Thursday, April 12. Mrs. Holbrook had been ill about five months. She was born at Webbville, March 20, 1869, a daughter of the late Green and Celina Jane Wright. Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Dennis Chapel with the Rev. Jack Perry officiating. Burial was made in the Holbrook Cemetery, route 1, Webbville. Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Perry, a foster son, Roscoe Daniel of Webbville; two sisters, Mrs. Jane Hammond of Webbville and Mrs. Wattie Marburger of Grove City, OH; three brothers, Millard Thompson of Columbus, OH, Grover Thompson of Webbville and Green Thompson of Greenfield, OH. JUSTICE, Strother

Strother Justice, Jr., 38, of Spokane, WA, formerly of Louisa, died Tuesday of last week in a Spokane hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Justice was born in Louisa, a son of the late Strother and Ruth Stokey Justice. He was an employee of the Milwaukee Railway Co., and was a veteran of World War II. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Young Funeral Home with the Rev. J. C. Hager and the Rev. William W. Moore officiating. Burial was made in the Greenlawn Cemetery. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Ottie Lesley of Middletown, OH and three brothers, James Justice of Columbus, John Justice of Louisa, and Spencer Justice of Spokane. Mrs. Amanda Bayes Lawson, 75, of Louisa, route 4, died Sunday in an Ashland hospital following an illness of two months. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Baker Church by the Rev. Leslie M. Rogers of Catlettsburg. Burial was made in Pine Hill Cemetery here. The body was at the Young Funeral Home here. Mrs. Lawson was born July 30, 1880 at Glenwood, KY, a daughter of the late William Riley and Julina Bayes. She was a member of the Christian Church. Her husband, Lark Lawson, died April 24, 1948. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. H. E. Benedict, Huntington, WV, Mrs. Thurston Hurt of Zelda, KY, and Mrs. Earl Trimble, of Ashland, a son, Preston Lawson of Ironton, OH, three sisters, Mrs. J. L. Fannin of Ironton, Mrs. Jim Fuller of Catlettsburg and Mrs. John Fields of Rush, KY; a brother, Y. C. Bates of Webbville and 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. MCKENZIE, Virginia Victoria (Murray)

Mrs. Virginia Victoria McKenzie, age 89, died April 10, 10:45 pm at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Herbert Blair, Route 4, Louisa, where she had resided for the past year. Her husband, Henry P. McKenzie, preceded her in death February, 1950. The deceased was born at Flat Gap, KY in 1867, a daughter of the late George and Dicie Salyers Murray. She had been a member of the Baptist Church for 65 years. Funeral services will be conducted Friday 10:30 am at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Blair, with the Rev. Harry Salyers and Rev. Bruce Daniels officiating. Burial will be made in the Sparks Cemetery at Flat Gap. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Roscoe Salyers, and Mrs. Herbert Blair of Route 4, Louisa, and Mrs. Wade McKenzie of Red Bush, KY, three sons, H. L. McKenzie and Charles McKenzie of Paintsville, and E. H. McKenzie, Volga, KY, two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Ramey of OH and Mrs. Emily Salyers, Ashland, KY, one brother, Tom Murray of Kerz, KY, 33 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. MEADE, Ardelia

1876-1956

Miss Ardelia Meade, 78, died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Arrington of Route 1, at 12:05 a.m. Monday.  She had been ill for the past year. She was born on Route 1, July 17, 1877 and has spent her entire life in this community.  She was reared by Mr. and Mrs. Lee Garred.  She was a member of the Methodist Church. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Young Funeral Home here.  The Rev. Charles Perry officiated and burial was made in the Garred Cemetery on Route 1. NOLAN, John

John Nolan, 55, of Louisa, died Monday evening at the Riverview Hospital where he had been a patient for the past three weeks. He had been in ill health for the past two years. Mr. Nolan was an employee of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway for 31 years but had been retired for the past nine years. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church here by the Rev. O'Ray Weeks. Burial was made in the Pine Hill Cemetery. The body was a the Curtright Funeral Home and was taken to the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday at lie in state until funeral time. Mr. Nolan was born in Louisa, a son of the late Rube Nolan, and of Mrs. Jennie Diamond Nolan, who survives and now lives at Catlettsburg. He and the former Maxie Carter, who survives, were married 37 years ago. He was a member of the First Baptist Church here. Surviving in addition to the mother and widow, are two daughters, Mrs. Ed Fyffe and Mrs. Oscar Edwards of Louisa; a son, John Nolan, Jr., at home; three sisters, Mrs. Marshall Dixon and Mrs. Hubert Elliott of Catlettsburg and Mrs. Lee King of Ashland, and two grandchildren. James O. Pigg, 88, of route 1, died at the home of a son, Joe Willis Pigg, Sunday at 6:30 p.m. after an illness of one week. He was a retired farmer and had lived with his son for the past five years. He was born at Blaine, KY, October 2, 1867, a son of the late Willie and Louisa Berry Pigg. His wife, Mrs. Cora Belle Hutchinson Pigg died in 1915. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Young Funeral Home. The Rev. S. B. Ball and the Rev. A. J. Roberts officiated, and burial was made in the Hutchinson Cemetery on route 3. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Wilson Roberts of Adams, KY; two sons, Joe Willis Pigg, Louisa route 1, and Lonnie Pigg of Columbus, OH; one sister, Mrs. Louvina Barnett of Route 3, Louisa, 8 grandchildren and one great grandchild. THOMPSON, Lena (Walter)

1878-1956

Mrs. Lena Walter Thompson, 77, well-known Louisa resident, succumbed Monday in the Louisa General Hospital, following an illness of five months. She was the widow of Dr. D. J. Thompson, of Webbville, KY, who preceded her in death June 25, 1942. Mrs. Thompson was born at Blaine, KY, May 24, 1878. She was a daughter of the late Monroe M. and Anna Patrick Walter, a pioneer family of the Blaine section of Lawrence County. She was a member of the Louisa Methodist Church and the O. E. S. Chapter, Grayson, KY. She has been in residence here for the past three years. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, 1:30 p.m. at the Louisa Methodist Church with the pastor, the Rev. Charles Perry, and Rev. J. H. Finch of Jenkins, KY officiating. Burial was made in the Webbville, KY Cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. W. A.   1. C. Vanhoose, 70, died at his home at Fort Gay at 4:15 a.m.  Sunday after an illness of two years. He had lived at Fort Gay for the past 58 years. He was born at Paintsville, KY, October 14, 1885, a son of the late William J. and Nancy Turner Vanhoose. He was married to Miss Sue Weddington 45 years ago. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Fort Gay Methodist Church. The Rev. Marcus Earp and the Rev. Burl Taylor officiated and burial was made in the Bartram Cemetery. The body was removed from the Curtright Funeral Home to the residence Monday and taken to the church one hour preceding the funeral service. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sue W. Vanhoose; two daughters, Mrs. Donovan Baker of Barstow, CA, Mrs. Edwin Lane of Detroit, MI; two sons, Russell Vanhoose of Allen Park, MI and Charles C. WORKMAN, Usher

Usher Workman, 85, of Ironton, OH, formerly of Fort Gay, WV died Thursday, April 12, in an Ironton hospital following an illness of five weeks. Mr. Workman, a former employee of N & W Railway, had been retired since 1936. His first wife, Elizabeth Workman, mother of the Workman children, died in 1938. He was a son of the late Alfred and Esther Bowen Workman. Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Fort Gay Baptist Church with the pastor, the Rev. Burl Taylor, officiating. Interment was made in Fairview Cemetery, Fort Gay. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Eustatia Hall Workman, whom he married 10 years ago; four daughters, Mrs. C. E. Bayes of Peebles, OH, Mrs. James Hess of Portsmouth, OH, Mrs. Ellis Daniels of Franklin Furnace, OH and Mrs. Denver Vaught of Eggleston, VA; four sons, R. B. Workman of Circleville, OH, Lace and Lucian Workman of Fort Gay and Harry H. Workman of Mansfield, OH and 35 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Will Yong, 80, died at 12:45 p.m. Monday, March 26, at the home of a nephew, Johnny Young of Webbville, route 1, (Irish Creek). Mr. Young, a retired farmer, was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. He was born on June 25, 1875, at Webbville, route 1, son of the late William and Fannie Adkins Young. Additional survivors include the widow, Mrs. Louisa Holbrook Young, three daughters, Mrs. E. A. Pfost, Mrs. Dora Horn, and Mrs. Lon Griffith of Columbus, OLH, two sons, Jonah and Milt Young of Columbus and a brother, Mart Young of Webbville route 1. The body was at the Young Funeral Home and was sent to the O. R. Woodyard Funeral Home in Columbus, where funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday March 28. Angeline Smith Alley, 86, of route 4, Louisa, died at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at her home after an illness of 13 years. She had resided on route 4, for 47 years. Mrs. Alley was born December 16, 1869 on John's Creek, Pike County, a daughter of the late Mark and Nancy Jane Maynard Smith. She was the widow of Luke S. Alley, who died March 9, 1956. Mrs. Alley had been a member of the Christian Church here for 59 years. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Myrtle Chapel with the Rev. Polk Dial of Huntington, WV officiating. Burial was made in the family cemetery on route 4, Louisa. The body was at the Young Funeral Home until one hour before services when it was taken to the church to lie in state until funeral time. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Ezra Adkins of Branchland, WV, Mrs. Jay Pfost of Shelbyville, KY, Mrs. Bennie Fugate at home, Mrs. C. B. Diamond of Columbus, OH and Mrs. J. D. BARKLEY, Alben W.

Senator Alben W. Barkley, 78, a great Kentuckian and a great American, collapsed and died Monday of a heart attack on the stage at Washington & Lee University, Lexington, VA, while delivering the keynote address at the Democratic mock convention, an annual event sponsored by the students of the Democratic party attending the University. The sudden death of the Senator and former vice president who had been a prominent figure on the state and national level for the past 43 years, brought expressions of grief from members of both political parties. The Senator's last words were "I would rather be a servant in the house of the Lord, than sit in the seat of the mighty". He then fell to the floor and died immediately. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning in the Foundry Methodist Church, Washington, where he served his state and nation for so long. Interment will be made Friday in his hometown, Paducah, KY. Governor A. B. Chandler, who will name a successor to fill the vacancy in the United States Senate until the November election, said when contacted, "There would be no appointment made until after the burial Friday."   1. L. Boys, 84, died at the home of his son, Ballard, at route 1, Fort Gay, WV at 2 p.m. Wednesday of last week. He had been visiting his son eight days. Mr. Boys formerly lived on Big Hurricane, WV. He was born October 18,1871, in Russell County, VA a son of the late Isaac and Elizabeth McCloud Boys.  He was a retired farmer. His wife, Suzanne Noble Boys, died in 1935. Mr. Boys was a member of the Greenbrier Baptist Church. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Forks of Hurricane Baptist Church with the Rev. J. B. Akers and the Rev. J. C. Simpkins officiating. Burial was made in the Christian Cemetery on Big Hurricane. The body was taken from the Curtright Funeral Home here to the home of his son, Ballard, at 11 a.m. Friday.   1. E. Bradley, 76, prominent citizen of Yatesville, died at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday in a Louisa hospital after an illness of two years. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday (today) at the residence by the Rev. Kelly Patton and the Rev. Fred VanHorn. Burial will be in the Bradley Cemetery at Yatesville. Mr. Bradley was born on January 12, 1880, so of the late Sylvester and Elizabeth Waldeck Bradley. He was a retired merchant and farmer and was a member of the Yatesville Methodist Church and Apperson Masonic Lodge of Louisa. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War. James M. Bromley, 75, of 712 Adams Ave., Huntington, WV, a former deputy assessor and former member of Huntington City Council, died Thursday afternoon of last week in a Huntington hospital. Mr. Bromley served as deputy assessor under W. M. Martin for a number of years and was on the Council for four terms. He was a retired Ohio Valley motorman. Mr. Bromley was a member of the West End Business Club and of the Louisa, KY Baptist Church. Robert Andrew Carter, 80, a native and lifelong resident of Lawrence County, died at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon at his home in Chapman, KY. His death followed an illness of the past five weeks. Mr. Carter was born on route 2, Louisa, September 27, 1875, a son of the late James O. and Elizabeth Hudson Carter. He was a retired farmer and had been a member of the Free Will Baptist Church for 29 years. Surviving are his wife, Ellen VanHoose Carter to whom he was married in 1914; two daughters, Mrs. Elmer Carter of South Vienna, OH and Mrs. George Jordan of Chapman, KY and 13 grandchildren. CHAPMAN, Priscilla (Waller)

Mrs. Priscilla Waller Chapman, 78, of Huntington, WV, died Friday morning in a Huntington hospital, after an illness of several weeks. She was the widow of George W. Chapman and they were former residents of Louisa, having moved to Huntington in 1930. Mrs. Chapman was a daughter of the late Asbury and Catherine Maynard Waller, of this county. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary, in Huntington, with Dr. James T. Browning, pastor of the Johnson Memorial Church, officiating. She had been an active member of that church for a number of years and was active in her circle of the Women's Society of Christian Service. She was laid to rest in the Ridgelawn Cemetery at Huntington. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. W. G. Chapman and Mrs. A. H. Snyder of Louisa, Mrs. Nara Miller of Fort Lauderdale, FL and Mrs. A. J. Kitchen of Huntington; and one son, George E. Chapman, of Louisa, three grandsons, Dr. F. Burgess Kilgore, of Huntington, A. H. Snyder, III, of Ashland, and George E. Chapman, Jr., of Louisa, two granddaughters, Miss Dee Kitchen of Huntington and Miss Julia W. Chapman of Louisa, and three great grandsons. Also surviving are a brother and a sister, Mr. Dennie Waller of route 4, Louisa, and Mrs. William McWhorter of Memphis, TN. Mrs. Willie Burgess Conley, 85, prominent former resident of Louisa, succumbed Thursday night, May 24 in a Plainfield, NJ hospital, after an illness of three years. She had resided with a son, Neil B. Conley at Plainfield, for the past six years. Mrs. Conley was born April 13, 1871, at Louisa and was a daughter of a pioneer family here the late Cornelius H. and Julia McClure Burgess and was in residence here for 70 years before going to Plainfield. She was preceded in death sixteen years ago by her husband, Milton F. Conley. She was a member of the Louisa Methodist Church and was active in all its organizations during her residence here. Funeral services were conducted Sunday 2 p.m. at the Curtright Funeral Home, with the Rev. Charles Perry, pastor of the Louisa Methodist Church officiating. Interment was made in Pine Hill Cemetery. Survivors include the son, Neil B. Conley, one brother, George R. Burgess of Louisa; three granddaughters, Mrs. Claude Ferguson of St. Joseph, MO, Mrs. William G. Kenney of Cleveland Heights, OH, and Miss Haney Mayhen of Roanoke, VA and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Roberta Jo Garvin, 40, died suddenly at 9 o'clock Tuesday of last week at her home, 1416 Maryland Parkway, Ashland, KY, after suffering a heart attack. Mrs. Garvin was born on May 1, 1916 in Louisa, KY, a daughter of Frederick Moore Dixon and Herma Waller Dixon. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ashland and had been a resident of Ashland for the past 32 years. Mrs. Garvin and her husband owned an interest in the Garson Drug Store, Catlettsburg and she had been active in the operation of the business. Surviving are the parents who reside at 1314 Montgomery Avenue, Ashland and her husband, Cecil H. Garvin. Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the John Steen Funeral Home with the Rev. M. D. Morton officiating. Catherine Sue Hall, new born daughter of James L. and Sarah Etta Hughes Hall, died in Munich, Germany May 11, 1956. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 2, at 11 a.m. at the home of Nelson Hughes, route 1, Webb, WV, near Clifford, KY with the Rev. Hughes officiating. Surviving are the parents, one sister, Susette Hall and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Hughes, Catlettsburg, KY route 1. The body arrived at the Curtright Funeral Home here Wednesday from Germany and will be taken Friday morning 11 a.m. to the Hughes home. HARRISON, Lloyd D.

Lloyd D. Harrison, 71, a well-known resident of Louisa, succumbed Saturday, 5:30 a.m. of a heart attack at his home here after an illness of two months. Mr. Harrison, born February 14, 1885, in WV, was a son of the late Samuel and Alice Tucker Harrison. He came to Louisa 36 years ago. He was a member of the First Methodist Church here and had been associated with the Marietta Torpedo Company for the past 43 years, retiring only four years ago. He was an active member of the Apperson Lodge No. 195 F & AM of which he served as master for three years and was known throughout this area for his unusual ability to lecture candidates for the Masonic order. He was a 32nd degree Mason with membership at Covington; a Shriner with membership at Ashland and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles at Marietta, OH. The Masonic Order here attended his funeral in body at the church and also the graveside rites. Surviving are his wife, Anna Minnick Harrison; one son, John A. Harrison; one granddaughter, one niece and two nephews. Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the First Methodist Church here with the Rev. A. J. Roberts officiating. Mont Hayes, 52, 3441 Blackburn Avenue, Ashland, KY, retired grocer, died at 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, May 23, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital following an illness of one month. He was born on June 10, 1903, in Lawrence County, KY, a son of the late John Hayes and Mary J. Hayes. He owned and operated a grocery on Blackburn Avenue for several years prior to his retirement in 1949. He was a member of the Unity Baptist Church, Poage Lodge No. 325, F & AM and Ashland Chapter No. 119, O. E. S.  Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Unity Baptist Church by the Rev. C. B. Coots and the Rev. L. H. Tipton. Burial was made in the Rose Hill Burial Park, Ashland, with graveside rites under the direction of Poage Lodge No. 325 F & AM. John Malcolm Moore, 92, of Lockwood, route 1, Catlettsburg, owner of Moore's Beach and a prominent farmer, died at 12:45 a.m. Saturday at his home following an extended illness. He was born February 3, 1864, at Louisa, a son of the late William F. and Margaret O'Brien Moore. He had lived in Boyd County for 82 years. He was a former member of the Louisa Methodist Church. PHILLIPS, Ray

Ray Phillips, son of Mrs. Melda Phillips of Louisa, failed to return from a fishing excursion on the waters of Licking River, near Alexandria, KY, May 6. When several hours passed, the family became alarmed and began a search which was unsuccessful until May 11, he was found, his boat having overturned, but definite details are not known why he failed to reach shore. Mr. Phillips was born near Louisa, April 25, 1915, one of six sons belonging to this family. His body was taken to a funeral home in Alexandria, where military rites were conducted, May 13. He is survived by the wife, who was Miss Louisa Lucas; his mother; one sister, Mrs. Elmer Adkins of Louisa; five brothers, Sterling Phillips of Sandy Hook, KY, William of Grayson, KY, John of Middleton, OH, Virgil of Lebanon, OH and Estill of Franklin, OH. Mrs. Jennie Maynard Ratcliffe, 83, of Louisa, route 2, died at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, at her home following an illness of two weeks. Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Clifford High School by the Rev. Sammie Branham. Burial was made in the Ratcliffe family cemetery at Clifford. Mrs. Ratcliffe was born December 2, 1872, daughter of the late Elijah and Minerva Frazier Maynard. She had been a member of the United Baptist church for 50 years. John R. Reid, 79, of the Peeled Oak section of Bath County, died at his home Sunday. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Eastin-Rickey Funeral Home at Mt. Sterling by the Rev. Kenneth Hopper. Burial was made in the Machpelah Cemetery. Mr. Reid was a retired farmer and mortician. A son, Richard P. Reid, is a mortician at the Curtright Funeral Home, Louisa. Clifford C. Waller, 29, of Fort Gay, WV died in the Veterans Hospital at Huntington, WV at 1:30 a.m. Saturday. He had been ill about a year. Mr. Waller was born August 15, 1927, at Webb, WV, a son of Charles and Cora Bowen Waller. He was employed by the Merchant Marine about a year ago when he joined the Army. He was discharged because of ill health. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Church of God, Fort Gay, by the Rev. Willard Jarrell. Burial was made in the Copley Cemetery at Webb, WV. Surviving are his parents; one sister, Mrs. B. e. Fields of Huntington; four brothers, Charles, Jr., in the U. S. Mrs. Versa Williams, 49, of Edsel, KY died late Sunday in a Huntington hospital. The body was taken tot he home of a brother in law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Williams, at Blevins, KY where funeral services were held Tuesday, 10:30 a.m. by the Rev. Jet Blevins. Burial was made in the Boggs Cemetery under the direction of Young Funeral Home, Louisa. Mrs. Williams was born May 30,1 906, at Edsel, a daughter of Harry and Emmalee Johnson Triplett, who survive and live at Edsel. She and her husband, Delbert Williams, were married 30 years ago. She was a member of the Baptist Church. Surviving are the parents; the husband; three daughters, Mrs. Fred Caldwell of Dehue, WV, Mrs. Sammy O'Neil of McConnell, WV and Miss Betty Jo Williams, at home; two sons, Harry and Billie Williams, of Columbus, OH; two sisters, Mrs. Virgie Riggs of Logan, WV and Mrs. Melissa Robertson of Frankfort, KY and 4 grandchildren. BLACKBURN, John Harlan

1891-1956

John Harlan Blackburn, 65, Louisa, route 1, Lick Creek section, died Tuesday in a Huntington hospital, after an illness of about one year. A son of Payton and Mary Rogain Moore Blackburn, he was born April 20, 1891, married about 20 years ago to Virgie Lee Shannon, who survives. Mr. Blackburn was a veteran of World War I, a retired merchant and farmer. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 8, at 2 p.m. at Moore's Chapel. The Rev. J. C. Hager and the Rev. S. B. Ball will officiate. Interment will be in the Blackburn Cemetery. He is survived by the wife; two daughters, Mrs. Cleo Haup, of Ludlow, KY and Miss Ann Blackburn at home; one son, Gene Blackburn of Louisa; three sisters, Mrs. John E. Latham, Clearwater, FL; Mrs. Davis Martin, route 1, Louisa, and Mrs. J. O. McAdams of Westerville, OH. The body will be removed from the Young Funeral Home to the residence Thursday afternoon, where it will remain until one hour before funeral services. Big Sandy News, June 7, 1956

 

BOWEN, Emma Jane (Hammond)

1865-1956

Mrs. Emma Jane Bowen, 90, died at 3 a.m. Tuesday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Oscar Rowe, 302 Water Street, Louisa. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Friendship United Baptist Church at Buffalo Horn by the Rev. Sammie Branham, the Rev. Columbus Tiller and the Rev. W. H. Preece. Burial will be in the Preston Cemetery near the church. Mrs. Bowen formerly lived in Martin County, and had lived in Louisa for 7 years. Her husband, Henry Bowen, died i 1936. She was born November 1, 1865, at Clifford, KY, a daughter of the late William C. and Betsy Fluty Hammond. Mrs. Bowen had been a member of the United Baptist Church for 60 years. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Rowe of Louisa, Mrs. Lewis Preston and Mrs. Rinda Spence of Martin County, and Mrs. Charles James of Sandusky, OH; three sons, John Bowen of Pittsburgh, Scott Bowen of Elk, WV and Roosevelt Bowen of Matewan; one sister, Mrs. Sally Shannon of Clifford and 49 grandchildren, 95 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. CAINES, Mary  (Salsbury)

1862-1956

Mrs. Mary Salsbury Caines, 93, died at 5:15 a.m. Monday, May 28, after an illness of one week. A resident of Louisa for many years, she had made her home with a daughter, Mrs. Minnie C. Kelley, 2604 Moore Street, Ashland, for the past 10 years. She was born in Floyd County, on June 11, 1862, a daughter of the late Robert and Jenny martin Salsbury. She was a member of the Louisa Baptist Church. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday Mary 30, at the John Steen Funeral Home, Ashland, by the Rev. Elwood Gibbs. Burial was made in the Caines Family Cemetery a Potters, KY. Surviving are three sons, R. H. and Harry Caines of Ashland, and W. W. Caines of Huntington, WV; two daughters, Mrs. Kelley and Mrs. J. F. CHURCH, T. J. (Dock)

1874-1956

  1. J. (Dock) church, 81, of Cadmus, KY, died May 31, 1956, at his home after an illness of six weeks. Mr. Church, a retired farmer, was born at Blaine, KY, October 8, 1874, a son of the late William and Rachel Church, and was a member of the Methodist Church. He was married to Sophia Ratcliffe, 56 years, who survives. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, June 2, 2 p.m. at the Green Valley schoolhouse, with the Rev. Fred Vanhorn officiating. Burial was made in the Adam Harmon Cemetery, near Cadmus. Survivors, other than the wife, include three sons, Jay and George Church of Columbus, OH, and Lon Church of Louisa; and two grandchildren. CREECH, Vocia Belle (Triplett)

1887-1956

Mrs. Vocia Belle Creech, 69, of Blaine, KY died at 5:15 p.m. Monday in a Louisa hospital after suffering a stroke Monday morning at her home. Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the residence by the Rev. Emery Ferguson and the Rev. Jett Blevins. Burial was made in the family cemetery at Blaine. Mrs. Creech was born on March 18, 1887 at Blevins, KY, a daughter of the late Calvin and Louvena Blevins Triplett. Survivors include the husband, Henry H. Creech; two daughters, Mrs. Hobson Blevins of Edsel, KY, and Mrs. Raymond Boggs of Martha, KY; a son, Lonnie Creech of Blaine; a brother, Harry Triplett of Edsel, and 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. The body was taken to the residence Tuesday afternoon from the Young Funeral Home. Big Sandy News, June 21, 1956

 

ESSELBURN, Samuel

Samuel Esselburn, 90, of Wooster, OH, a retired banker, was killed instantly Friday morning, June 22, when a car in which he was a passenger went out of control and upset on U. S. route 23 about 13 miles south of Louisa. Coroner L. Byron Young said a coroner's jury ruled that the death was accidental and unavoidable. The driver was identified as William Weisman of Wooster. He suffered minor injuries. Mr. Esselburn's death was attributed to a head injury. He and Mr. Weisman were enroute from Miami, FL to Wooster. Mr. Esselburn's body was a the Curtright Funeral Home and was taken to Wooster Friday. A bachelor, he is survived by one brother, Oliver Esselburn of Wooster. Big Sandy News, June 28, 1956

 

FANNIN, Millard

1878-1956

Funeral services for Millard Fannin, 80, of Louisa, KY, who died at 7:20 p.m. Friday after a three months illness, was conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at a granddaughter's home, Mrs. Bill Henson of 513 Lackey Avenue, Louisa. the Rev. J. C. Hager and the Rev. Fred Vanhorn officiated and burial was made in Myrtle Chapel Cemetery. Mr. Fannin was born in Martin County, KY and lived for 33 years in Fallsburg, KY. He was a retired farmer. He is survived by his widow, Perline Scott Fannin; one stepson, Marvin Scott of Louisa; a half brother, Dewey Fannin of Versailles, KY; two nephews, five granddaughters, Mrs. George Kokiko, Mrs. Charles Fitzgerald, Mrs. Bill Henson, Mrs. George Henson, of Louisa and Mrs. Charles Salliers of Bluefield; two grandsons and two great grandchildren. FERNQUIST, Beulah (Pfost)

1896-1956

Mrs. Beulah Fernquist, 59, a former resident of Lawrence County, passed away at her residence East 11th Avenue, Columbus, OH, June 1, of a heart attack. Mrs. Fernquist was born in Lawrence County near Louisa, in what is now known as the Five Forks Section, June 30, 1896, the oldest daughter of Warwick Bristow and Ida Ellen Pfost. She moved to Columbus in 1925, and has lived there since that time. She married Levi Hayton, to which marriage was born two daughters, Ida and Elsie Lee Hayton. She later married Mr. Fernquist in Ohio. She is survived by one daughter, Elsie Lee (Mrs. H. H. Britcher) 221 Wilson Drive, Columbus, one sister, Mrs. Mary Arrington of Hardy, KY; four brothers, Charles and Arnett of Columbus, OH, Jay Pfost of Shelbyville, KY and John Pfost of route 4, Louisa, and four grandchildren. Her daughter, Ida, preceded her in death several years ago. Funeral rites were conducted in the O. R. Woodyard Chapel at 10:30 a.m. June 4, 1956, with the Rev. Ira P. Day officiating. Burial was in the Greenlawn Cemetery where the daughter is interred. Mrs. Fernquist with her daughter and son in law, Mr. and Mrs. Britcher, were visiting the John Pfost family of route 4,  on May 27. Big Sandy News, June 28, 1956

 

FITZPATRICK, James

1880-1956

James Fitzpatrick, 75, a retired N & W Railway employee died Friday, June 8, at 12:10 a.m. at his home , Clifford, KY after an illness of six months. Mr. Fitzpatrick a lifelong resident of Clifford, was born December 12, 1880. He was a son of the late Ulysses and Betty Maynard Fitzpatrick. He was married 45 years to Catharine Farra Fitzpatrick, who survives. Funeral services were conducted at the home Sunday, June 10, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Sammie Branham officiating. Burial was made in the Fitzpatrick Cemetery at Clifford. Survivors include the wife; one daughter, Mrs. Alvis Maynard, Clifford, one son, Curtis Fitzpatrick, also of Clifford; three sisters, Mrs. Minerva Crum , Glenhayes, WV, Mrs. Sallie Damron and Mrs. Andy New, both of ??, 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. FLETCHER, Sam

1893-1956

Sam Fletcher, 62, of Louisa, route 1, died at 5 a.m. Monday in a Huntington hospital following an illness of one year. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Cynthia Chapel on Louisa route 1, by the Rev. Grant Raines. Burial was made in the Isaac Cemetery. Graveside rites were conducted by W. O. Johnson Post 89, American Legion. Mr. Fletcher, a farmer, was born May 14, 1893, on Louisa, route 1. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of Legion Post 89. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Bessie Hughes Fletcher; a son, Tom Fletcher, Memphis, TN; the mother, Mrs. Edna Isaac of Louisa, route 1, a sister, Mrs. Marie Harris of Woodland, CA; a brother, Lindsey Fletcher of Woodland; and a half brother, Rufus Isaac of Fairmont, WV. GEORGE, Julia Catherine (Davis)

1867-1956

Mrs. Julia Catherine George, 86, died at 6:45 p.m. yesterday at the Ulysses, KY home of her son, Will, following an illness of one month. She was born December 1, 1867, in Richardson, KY., a daughter of the late Joseph and Edith Borders Davis.  Mrs. George, a resident of Ulysses for 60 years, was the widow of Jessie George. Surviving are four sons, Will, Ulysses; Edward, Route 1, Louisa; Joseph, Louisa, and Omar, Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Effie Davis, Ulysses and Mrs. John George of Georges Creek; two brothers, R.B. Davis, Richardson, and Walter Davis, Route 1, Louisa; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. The funeral was held at the home of her son, Will, at 2:00 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. JOHNSON, W. F.

  1. F. Johnson, formerly of Adams, KY, but for many years a resident of Maysville, KY died Saturday June 2 at 9 p.m. from a heart attack. His wife was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Justice deceased. Later her mother remarried and was known here as Mrs. Emma Cooner. She is a relative of Mrs. John M. Moore of Louisa. MCINTIRE, Anna (Bayles)

1889-1956

Mrs. Anna Bayles McIntire, 67, wife of E. F. McIntire of Milton, WV succumbed at the Cabell-Huntington Hospital Tuesday at 3 p.m. after a 10 day illness. She had been in poor health for some time, but became acutely ill 10 days prior to her death. The McIntires were formerly resident of Louisa but several years ago moved to Allegan, MI where they lived until two years ago, they moved to Milton, WV, where a daughter, Mrs. Ray Harbour, lived. Mrs. McIntire was born May 2, 1880 at Bevin, OH, a daughter of the late Leander and Laura Goddard Bayles. The couple were married 48 years. Funeral services will be held at the First Methodist Church of Louisa, Friday, June 8 at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. A. J. Roberts, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial will be in Pine Hill cemetery. Mrs. McIntire had been a life-long member of the First Methodist Church and a charter member of the Old Star Mothers' Club of America. The body will remain at the Curtright Funeral Home until one hour before the service. Surviving are the husband; three daughters, Mrs. A. B. Cyrus, Allegan, MI, Mrs. Ray R. Harbour, Milton, WV, and Mrs. J. N. Marcum, Jr., of Louisa; three sons, Everett L. McIntire and Jack G. McIntire, of Allegan, MI and Arthur F. MOORE, James S.

1869-1956

James S. Moore, 86, of the Nunly Pike section of Fallsburg, KY, died at 8:30 p.m. Saturday night at the home following an illness of two weeks. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the graveside at Moore Cemetery by the Rev. Lloyd Jordan. the body is at the Curtright Funeral Home here. Mr. Moore was born at Busseyville, KY, on October 17, 1869. He had lived at Fallsburg most of his life. His parents were the late J. C. L. and Martha Castle Moore. He was a retired farmer. His wife, Mrs. Victoria Tomlin Moore, died in 1945. Surviving are a son, Lon Moore of Jackson, OH; a sister, Mrs. Kay Frasher of Zelda, KY; a brother, the Rev. O'NEAL, Jean Vinson (Spencer)

1894-1956

Mrs. Jean Vinson Spencer O'Neal, of 2705 Panola Street, Catlettsburg, died Thursday, June 14, at the home of a cousin, Mrs. John Calvert, 4006 Piedmont Road, Huntington, WV, shortly after suffering a heart attack at 6:30 p.m. Mrs. O'Neal had been visiting at the Calvert home a week. She was born in Lawrence County, KY a daughter of the late David and Josephine Castle Spencer. She had been a Catlettsburg resident for 35 years, and was a member of the First Methodist Church. She was a charter member of the Catlettsburg Woman's Club. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Kilgore-Collier Funeral Home, with the Rev. L. M. Rogers and the Rev. A. P. Keyser officiating. Burial was made in the Catlettsburg Cemetery. Survivors include one son, William D. O'Neal, Catlettsburg city councilman; two daughters, Mrs. E. C. McDowell of Gulfport, MS and Mrs. Karl Barber of Catlettsburg; three sisters, Mrs. H. P. Madsen of Rivera, CA, Mrs. F. D. RATCLIFF, Mrs. John F.

1866-1956

Mrs. John F. Ratcliff, prominent pioneer of Louisa, succumbed at her home here at 9:15 Thursday morning, June 21, after an illness of several weeks. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Curtright Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Perry and the Rev. J. C. Hager officiating. Burial was made in the Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington, with Dr. S. Roger Tyler, of St. John's Episcopal Church officiating.  Mrs. Ratcliff's late husband and the late Hugh B. Hagan, Sr., were partners for many years in the Hagan-Ratcliff Grocery Co., Huntington, WV. Mrs. Ratcliff, known affectionately to friends and relatives as "Aunt Chub" was born in Louisa on September 5, 1866, the daughter of the late Major and Mrs. B. J. Burchett. Following their marriage, she and Mr. Ratcliff lived for a time in Louisa, then moved to Huntington. Eighteen years ago she returned to Louisa and since then had made her home with a sister, Mrs. Adelaide Burchett Biggs. Mrs. Ratcliff was a member of Johnson Memorial Methodist Church, Huntington. She and her husband were the parents of two children, the late Anna Louisa Long, wife of the late Luther T. Long of Huntington, and Jack Ratcliff of New York City, widely known writer. He visited his mother here just one week ago and sailed recently with his family for Italy where he planned to spend 16 months doing research and writing. Surviving in addition to her son and the sister are 8 grandchildren: Mrs. Ernest Peyton of Dallas, TX; Mrs. Frank Thornburg of Knoxville, TN; Luther T. Long, Jr., of Hot Springs, AR, Miss Ann Long of Little Rock, AR, and Lydia, Alex, John and Tony Ratcliff all of New York City. ROBERTS, Walter B.

News was received Saturday morning by Mrs. George Hayes, that her nephew, Walter B. Roberts, of Fort Walton Beach, FL had succumbed to a heart attack early Saturday morning. Walter is the son of W. J. Roberts, of Huntington, WV and his wife, Ella, who died some years ago. He had been for many years a member of the State Unemployment Commission of West Virginia, but in 1954 went with his wife and son, Rickie, to Florida, where he has since been engaged in business for himself. Death was sudden and unexpected. He suffered an attack and was taken to a local hospital, where his condition was reported as satisfactory. Then a second attack, following soon after, was fatal. Burial arrangements had not been completed at the time the news was received. But is was agreed that he would be buried in Florida. His sister and brother in law, Mr. and Mrs. John Moss of Huntington, and Mr. and Mrs. Burns Roberts of Beckley, WV left Saturday to attend the last rites. Big Sandy News, June 28, 1956

 

WOODS, Elizabeth (Lewis)

1904-1956

Elizabeth Lewis Woods, 52, of Zelda, KY, died in a Louisa hospital at 8:50 p.m. Tuesday, June 12. She had been ill about 5 years. Mrs. Woods was born January 6, 1904, in Beckley, WV. She was a registered nurse and a member of the Buchanan Methodist Chapel. She was the wife of Charlie Woods of Zelda, whom she married 16 years ago. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Buchanan Methodist Chapel by the Rev. J. C. Hager. Burial was made in the Buchanan Chapel Cemetery. Surviving are her husband; one sister living in Canada and one brother living in England. The body was at the Young Funeral Home. Big Sandy News, June 21, 1956

BATES, Murlie (Rule)

1890-1956

Mrs. Murlie Kazee Bates, 66, Blaine, KY, died at her home at 5 a.m. Saturday of a heart attack. She was born in Johnson County, KY, March 27, 1890, a daughter of the late John and Minnie Stafford Rule. She had lived in Blaine for the pat 37 years. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Oshal Murray, Ashland, and Mrs. Gus Scarberry, Catlettsburg; two sons, John K, Kazee, Plain City, OH and Scott K. Kazee, Blaine; one sister, Mrs. Virgie Flippan, Mingo Junction, OH; 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The body was at the Young Funeral Home in Louisa where it remained until 9 a.m. Monday. At that time it was taken to the Blaine Church of God for the service at 10:30 a.m. conducted by the Rev. BORDERS, Clarence

1882-1956

Clarence Borders, 74, of Richardson, KY, died at his home, at 2:30 a.m. Saturday after a long illness. He was a retired farmer. Mr. Borders was born at Richardson January 27, 1882, a son of the lat Art and Mary Preston Borders. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the New Mount Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Art Thompson, the Rev. Earl Meade and the Rev. Tommy Dalton. Burial was in the Borders Cemetery at Richardson. Survivors are his wife, Cora Daniels Borders; two sisters, Mrs. Sam Stapleton of Richardson and Mrs. Nathan Meade of Hellier, KY; one brother, Bill Borders of Richardson. BURTON, Charles

1931-1956

Charles Burton, of Thealka, KY, was the victim of accidental death at Dewey Lake, Friday of last week, making the thirteenth victim of the lake since its impoundment in 1949. Burton, 25, was driving along the edge of the lake near the Stratton Branch swimming area, when he, according to reports, lost control of the auto he was driving, and plunged into the lake. Buddy Daniels, 21, also of Thealka, a nephew of Burton, was thrown from the car and rescued by parties a the lake. He was admitted to a Paintsville hospital, suffering from shock. Burton, a graduate of the Paintsville high school, was a student at the Mayo Vocational Training School and would have completed his course in Business Administration the latter part of this month. He was a son of Mrs. Foster Burton, of Thealka, and the late Mr. Burton, and a grandson of Mrs. Al Burton. The Burton families are natives of Blaine, KY. Funeral rites for the victim were conducted at the home of the mother, with whom he had been living, Monday. The Rev. Claude Preston and Rev. Hooper officiated. Burial was made in the Bridgeford Cemetery under the direction of Paintsville Funeral Home. Relatives from Louisa attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. John Burton, Mrs. Buell Lyon, Mrs. J. H. EVANS, Andrew J.

1890-1956

Andrew J. Evans, 66, of Louisa, died Wednesday night, June 27, in an Ashland hospital after an illness of one year. Graveside funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Phillip Preece Cemetery at Louisa, with the Rev. Grover Bradshaw officiating. Mr. Evans formerly lived in Orrville, CA and had been in Louisa about a year. He was born April 4, 1890 in Mingo County, WV, a son of the late Ira and Mary Evans. He was a retired U. S. forester and was employed at Plumas National Forest, CA. Survivor include the widow, Mrs. Abbie Lawson Evans, and two sisters, Mr. Philip Preece of Louisa, and Mrs. Esta Whitt of Hurricane. LAKIN, Nora (Meade)

1883-1956

Mrs. Nora Meade Lakin, 72, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Amelia Jennings, Buchanan, at 1 a.m. Saturday following an illness of 10 weeks. She was born Dec. 16, 1883, in Zelda, KY, a daughter of the late Henry K. and Willie Davis Meade.  She lived most of her life in Buchanan and was for 56 years a member of the Methodist Church there.  Surviving in addition to her daughter are four sisters, Mrs. Margie Collinsworth, Portsmouth. OH, Mrs. Everett Walker, Princess, KY, Mrs. Clifford Eppenstein, Ashland, KY, and Mrs. Lee Oaks, Akron, OH; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. The body remained at the Curtright Funeral Home in Louisa until Monday at 1 p.m. when it was taken to the Methodist Church in Buchanan for the 2 p.m. funeral services conducted by the Rev. Ira Copley. Burial followed in the Buchanan Chapel Cemetery. Big Sandy News, July 12, 1956

 

MCGUIRE, Glen Allen

The body of A-B Glen Allen McGuire, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. McGuire, Sr., of Fort Mitchell, KY, former Lawrence County residents was returned to the Carman Funeral Home, Russell, KY for final rites. The body arrived Saturday from the Caribou Air Station at Limestone, Maine. Air Force authorities said the body of McGuire was found hanging in his quarters at the Caribou Air Station Tuesday night. A preliminary investigation, the public information officers at Loring Air Force Base at Limestone said, resulted in a decision by base authorities of suicide by hanging. Young McGuire entered the Air Force in September 1955. He attended the Russell Schools and was graduated from St. Joseph Catholic High School in Ironton, OH with the 1956 graduating class.  His parents lived in Russell until the past year when Mr. McGuire was transferred to Covington, KY. He is supervisor of water supply in the maintenance of way department of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Co. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 1p. m. at the funeral chapel. The Rev. J.B. Venia Kilgore Pigg, 50, route 1, Louisa, died at 9:05 p.m. Thursday, July 12, in a Louisa hospital following an illness of six years. Mrs. Pigg was born February 12, 1906, in Wise, VA, a daughter of the late Robin and Nellie Mays Kilgore. She lived in Louisa for 25 years and was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church for the past 25 years. Surviving are her husband, Ben Pigg; four daughters, Irene, Garnet Lou, Thelma Arcella and Shirley Frances Pigg, all at home; seven sons, Garfield, Everett Lee and Paul Eugene Pigg, at home, Lawrence and Clyde Harlan Pigg, route 1, Louisa, Ben Pigg, Jr., route 3, Louisa, Charlie Pigg, Columbus, OH, three sisters, Mrs. Jack Gibson and Mrs. Everett Pigg, both of Hellier, KY and Mrs. Hays Hilton, Williamson, WV; two brothers, Henderson Kilgore, Ash Camp, KY and Orville Kilgore, Hager, KY and two grandchildren. The body was at the Curtright Funeral Home where it remained until time for the funeral service, 11 a.m. Sunday at the Cynthia Chapel. The Rev. Willie Moore and the Rev. Gallie Isaacs officiated, and by special request by Mrs. Pigg before her demise, Dr. Forest Shely sang some of her favorite hymns at the funeral. Burial followed in the Pigg Cemetery on Lick Creek. Jesse David Ross, 62, of Skaggs, KY was found dead in the barnyard on his farm at 6 a.m. Saturday by his wife, Mrs. Nola Hay Ross. Mr. Ross had suffered a heart attack when he went to the barnyard to feed his stock and failed to return for breakfast. His wife went into the barnyard to look for her husband and found his body. Mr. Ross, a prominent farmer, was born at Flat Gap, KY, December 19, 1893, a son of Mrs. Rhoda McKenzie Ross and the late William Marion Ross. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at his home with the Rev. Herman Ross and the Rev. Willie Sparks. Burial was made in the family cemetery at Skaggs. Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Louella Markley, of Columbus, OH; three sons, Edgar Ross of Mazie, KY, Wilmer Ross of Marion, OH and Jesse Ross, Jr., of Skaggs, and by his mother, who also lives at Skaggs; 9 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Runyon, 60, Richardson, KY, died at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 28, at her home following an illness of 14 years. She was born February 3, 1896, in Richardson, a daughter of the late Milton and Melissa Fitzpatrick. Mrs. Runyon was the widow of Oscar Runyon who died in 1948. Surviving are two daughters, Margery Marie and Janet Ethel Runyon at home; five sons, Oscar, II, Alec Milton, Chester Lee, Randolph and Robert R. Mrs. Elsie Bartlett Vaughan, 81, route 2, Louisa, died at her home at 7:30 a.m. Saturday following an illness of five months. Mrs. Vaughan was born October 22,1874, in Georges Creek, KY, a daughter of the late Simon and Alice Borders Bartlett. She lived at Louisa route 2, for 48 years. She lived at Georges Creek and Catlettsburg, KY before moving to route 2, Louisa. Surviving are the husband, E. R. Vaughan, to whom she was married for 61 years; 5 daughters, Mrs. C. V. Back, Louisa, Mrs. W. C. Sammons, Mrs. Clarence Sammons, Mrs. Robert Jordan and Mrs. Ruth MacHenry, all of Louisa, route 2; three sisters, Mrs. Jack Thompson, Somerset, KY, Mrs. Ed Donta and Miss Anna Bartlett, both of Ashland, KY; and two brothers, Charley Bartlett, Ashland and Roy Bartlett, Georges Creek and several grandchildren. The body was removed from the Curtright Funeral Home in Louisa to the Vaughan residence at 3 p.m. Saturday. Funeral services were held Monday at 1 p.m. at the Cherryville Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. W. B. Curnutte, Rev. Woodrow Brumfield and Rev. Homer Grooms. VINSON, James Milton

James Milton Vinson, 74, prominent Louisa business man and a member of one of Eastern Kentucky's pioneer families, died at his home on Jefferson Street, Louisa, at 4:11 p.m. Saturday. He had been in ill health for about a year and seriously ill for the past two weeks. Mr. Vinson, a native of Louisa, was born April 8, 1882. He was a son of the late K. F. and Nancy Wellman Vinson. He was connected in the business circle here as a merchant for the past 37 years. His latest business association was with his only son, Robert Vinson, in the Vinson Jewelry Store. He was united in marriage 54 years ago to Miss Nellie Wellman, who survives him. He had been a member of the First Baptist Church, Louisa, for the past 50 years. The body was removed from the Curtright Funeral Home to the home of his son 202 Franklin Street, where it remained until funeral time Monday, when it was returned to the funeral home where services were conducted at 2 p.m. by the Rev. J. C. Hager. Mr. Vinson's former pastor of Louisa Methodist Church. Burial was made in the Pine Hill Cemetery, Louisa. Survivors, other than his wife and son, include one sister, Mrs. J.O. Mrs. Carrie Snyder Adams, 73, a native of Louisa, succumbed at 6:45 p.m. Saturday at her home, 3232 Oakland Avenue, Catlettsburg, after an extended illness. Mrs. Adams was born December 17, 1882, in Louisa, a daughter of a prominent couple, the late Thomas Jefferson and Sallie McClure Snyder. She was a member of the Catlettsburg Methodist Church. At the time of her retirement after 33 years of service with the Huntington Division, U. S. Corps of Engineers, Mrs. Adams was honored with being presented a distinguished service pin, one of the few women receiving this award. Funeral rites were held Monday,2 p.m. at the residence and graveside rites were conducted at Pine Hill Cemetery, Louisa, where interment was made. The Rev. L. M. Rogers, Catlettsburg and the Rev. Charles Perry, Louisa, officiated. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Ray M. Meek of Catlettsburg, and Mrs. John M. The body of Andy Bowens, 74, of Berlin Heights, OH, who died at Norwalk, OH Memorial Hospital, Sunday, arrived in Louisa Tuesday at 5 p.m. and was taken tot he Young Funeral Home. Mr. Bowens, a former resident of Louisa, had lived in Berlin Heights, near Norwalk, for the past ten years. John H. Cummings, 95, of Louisa, died at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in a Louisa hospital following an illness of five days. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Curtright Funeral Home by the Rev. Charles Perry and the Rev. A. J. Roberts. Burial was made in Pine Hill Cemetery. Graveside rites were conducted by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Louisa Lodge 270. Mr. Cummings was born on June 26, 1861, at Peach Orchard, KY, son of the late William G. and Isabella McKay Cummings. A resident of Louisa for the past 56 years, Mr. Cummings was a retired cement pavement and road contractor, and for a number of years operated a grocery store in Louisa. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Louisa Lodge 270. Survivors include a son, Dr. John W. Cummings, three nephews, Earl C. McClure of Fort Gay, A. C. Stephen Ewers, infant son of Wallace and Billie Jean Chaffin Ewers of Louisa, died Sunday night in a Louisa hospital. Graveside funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at Green Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. Charles Perry. The Young Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Anthia Goins, 83, died in Louisa General Hospital at 6:30 p.m. Monday after a four weeks illness. Mrs. Goins had been a resident of Louisa for the past four years, having moved here from Yatesville, KY. She was born in Bath County, VA, on March 10, 1873, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Messer. She had been a member of the Methodist Church for the past 60 years. Her husband, George Goins, died in May 1928. Surviving are a son, William O. Goins of Ashland, KY, 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Morgan Creek Church with the Revs. Fred VanHorn and Lloyd Jordan officiating. William Howell, 51, of Holden, WV died Sunday afternoon at Glenwood, KY of a heart attack. Mr. Howell and his wife were visiting his sisters at Glenwood and had gone to the family cemetery nearby to place flowers on the grave of a son. He was stricken and died shortly after they reached the cemetery. Mr. Howell was born October 30, 1904 at Glenwood, a son of the late William and Liddie Triplett Howell. He was married 30 years ago tot he former Miss Lottie Evans, and they had lived in Holden for 21 years. Mr. Howell was a employee of Island Creek Coal Co. Funeral rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the home of his sisters, Misses Maude and Emma Howell, Glenwood, with the Rev. Lee Gore of Kenova, WV officiating. Burial will follow in the Howell Cemetery at Glenwood. Mrs. Annie Freeman Hufford, 88, of Chesapeake, OH, and Fort Gay, WV, died Saturday, August 18 in a Louisa hospital after a two day illness. Funeral services were conducted at the Curtright Funeral Home, here Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. by the Rev. Burl Taylor. Burial was made in the Ferguson Cemetery on West Virginia Route 37 near Fort Gay. Mrs. Hufford, a former Huntington resident, was born at Danville, PA, on January 24, 1868, a daughter of the late John and Anne James Freeman. Her parents came from Wales. Mrs. Hufford taught for 8 years in a school for the deaf in Chicago. Her husband, John E. Hufford, died in 1943. She was a member of the Johnson Memorial Methodist Church in Huntington, WV. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. James P. Heninger of Chesapeake and Mrs. Luther Frazier of Fort Gay; a brother, Elmer E. Freeman of Kansas City and 3 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Kash Ledford, 43, former Louisa resident, employed as a welder for the Republic Steel Company at Canton, OH, died following injuries in an automobile accident late Monday afternoon near Millersburg, OH. Mr. Ledford had spent the weekend in Russell, KY, with his family and was en route to Canton at the time of the accident. The body was returned to the Carman Funeral Home in Russell Tuesday. Mr. Ledford was born June 28, 1913, at Maytown, KY, in Morgan County, a son of C. B. and Maud Wilson Ledford of Pomeroyton, KY. He was a veteran of World War II and served with the Marine Corps. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Maytown, a member of the First Christian Church and the American Legion, Louisa, KY. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday (today) at 2 p.m. at the Carman Funeral Home, Russell with the Rev. Ned Reneau, former pastor of the First Christian Church, Louisa, officiating. Interment will be made at Russell. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Laura Burton Ledford, manager of the Standard Store in Russell; two daughters, Miss Jane Ledford, a student nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital, Lexington, KY and Miss Ann Ledford, a student at the University of Kentucky; two sons, Burton Ledford, a member of the Marine Clorps, stationed at Camp LeJeune, NC, and Billy Ledford, at home; his parents of Pomeroyton, KY and one brother, Pat Ledford of Middletown, OH. Mrs. Plura Moore, 66, wife of John Moore of Skaggs, KY, died at her home Thursday morning, following an illness of nine months.  Death was attributed to cancer. The daughter of the late A. M. and Sena Skaggs Segraves, she was born May 16, 1888, at Barn Rock. She had been a resident of Skaggs, Ky. for six years. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church at Skaggs. Surviving besides the husband are one son, Mart Moore, Blaine, Ky.; two daughters, Mrs. Lula Mae Atone, Lima, Ohio, and Mrs. Verla Faye Segraves, Hilliards, Ohio; one sister, Mrs. Lula Swiney, Lucasville, Ohio; four brothers, Clarence Segraves, Ashland, Lonnie Segraves, Charleston, W. Va., Paris Segraves, Hilliards, Ohio; 20 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday morning, July 21, 1956 at the home with Robie Ferguson, Proctor Lyons, Norvil Vanover and Addie Ferguson as officiating ministers. Mrs. Della Pigg Pack, 86, of High Bottom, Louisa, route 1, died at 1:40 p.m. Tuesday at her home after an illness of six years. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today (Thursday), at the Curtright Funeral Home by the Rev. Raymond Duncan. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Pack was born at Louisa, July 8, 1870, a daughter of the late Thomas and Harriet Caperton Pigg. She lived in torchlight, KY for 74 years, and returned to Louisa 12 years ago. Mrs. Pack was a member of the Methodist Church. Her husband, James Henry Pack, died in 1955. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Mary Vermillion of Louisa and Mrs. Emma McCallister of Louisa route 3; one step daughter, Mrs. Woodrow Baker of Miami, FL; four sons, Alva Abshire of Majestic, KY, Sherman Abshire of Paintsville, KY, Frank Abshire of Huntington, WV and Elwood Abshire of Ranger; one stepson, Hubert Pack of Louisa and 23 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. Scott Griffith and the Rev. Bruce Daniels. Burial was made in the Kazee Cemetery at Ulysses. Mrs. Tolliver was born June 20, 1867 at Charley, KY, a daughter of the late James and Martha Deboard Edwards. She had lived in Ulysses for the past 70 years. Her first husband, Henry Wise Kazee, died in 1915. Mrs. Cora Mae Williams, 49, 225 29th Street, Ashland, KY, died at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday of last week after an illness of seven weeks. Mrs. Williams was born July 10, 1907, in Lawrence County, a daughter of the Rev. Felix Skaggs and the late Rilda Collier Skaggs. She was employed at the Chimney Corner Tea room, Ashland, for the past 10 years. Surviving in addition to the father, are the husband, Estill J. Williams, Sr.; four sons, Billy G., Leslie Myrl, and Estill J. Williams, Jr., all of Ashland and James K. Williams of Dayton, OH; two sisters, Mrs. Merica Branham and Mrs. Mack Preece both of Louisa and two grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Friday at 10 a.m. at the Smokey Valley Church by the Rev. Paul E. Diamond. Burial followed in the family cemetery. The body was removed from the Miller Funeral Home, Ashland, to the residence Wednesday morning, and was brought to Mrs. Preece's home Thursday where it remained until the time of funeral. He was born on Route 1, Webbville, KY, April 1, 1871, a son of the late Oliver Perry and Eleanor Prince Young. He was a member of the United Baptist Church. Mr. Young's wife, Kate Dixon Young, died in 1946. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Mart Young Cemetery by the Rev. Jarrett Cordle. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Castle of Ashland and Mrs. Nancy Ball of Justice, WV. The body remained at the Young Funeral Home in Louisa until the time of the funeral. Elliott Ferguson, 42, Wayne High School teacher died Friday, August 31 in a Huntington hospital. Mr. Ferguson --(next two paragraphs unreadable). He attended Wayne High School but upon completion of the high school at Fort Gay he transferred to that school and was graduated there. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees at Marshall College and had done work on a doctorate at Ohio State University. Mr. Ferguson served in the army in the South Pacific during World War II and was in service between 1942 and 1946. He was a member of the Greenbrier Baptist Church and the American Legion. He was born at Fort Gay, July 20, 1914, son of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Ferguson, He married the former Ruth Bartram, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nile Bartram of Clifford, KY. The Fergusons resided at Wayne with their four children. Funeral services were conducted Monday, September 3, at the Greenbrier Baptist Church at Echo, with the Rev. Audra Lester and the Rev. Allen Massey officiating. Burial was made in Elmwood Cemetery at Wayne. HAWS, Nell (See)

Mrs. Nell See Haws, 77, a native of Lawrence County, who had resided in Ashland, KY, since 1914, succumbed early Monday morning at her home 2424 Bath Avenue, Ashland. She had been in failing health for the past several weeks and suffered a severe heart attack more than a month ago. The deceased was the widow of Charles H. Haws. She was born and reared in Lawrence County, and was a daughter of the late Samuel and Bell Burchett See. Mrs. Haws was an active member of the First Methodist Church, the Westwood Homemakers Club and the Clarence Field Post, American Legion Auxiliary. The body was removed from the Kilgore-Collier Funeral Home, Catlettsburg, to the residence in Ashland at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, where it remained until 9 a.m. Thursday (today) when it will be removed to the First Methodist Church, Ashland, where rites will be conducted at 10 a.m.. Following services there, the body will be brought here, where additional rites will be held at 2 p.m. with the Rev. A. J. Roberts, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be made in the See Cemetery at Walbridge. Edward P. McBrayer, 80, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Effie Castle, 5728 Wilson Ave., Sciotoville, OH at 8 p.m. Saturday, September 1. He had been at the home for ten days after moving from Washington, C. H., OH. Born October 18, 1875, he was a son of James and Ruth Hall McBrayer, of Rush, KY. The deceased, a retired farmer, married April 7, 1893, to Della Wheeler. After her death, he married Mrs. Sara Lyon, deceased four years. He came to Lawrence County where he reared his family and remained until 1940. Mr. McBrayer was a member of the First Baptist Church, Washington, C. H., OH. Services were conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 4, at North Moreland Christian Baptist Church, Portsmouth, OH. Services were conducted by the Rev. Alonzo Ferguson. Lindsey G. Miller, 69, of Charley, KY died Sunday in a Louisa hospital. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the home by the Rev. Willie Moore. Burial was made in the Hayes Cemetery. The body was taken home from the Young Funeral Home. Mr. Miller was born at Charley on January 27,1 887. His parents were the late Henry and Martha Johnson Miller. He had been a member of the Free Will Baptist Church for 47 years. Charlie Moore, 74, of Adams, KY, died Saturday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Shelva Short, Columbus, OH. Funeral rites were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Cando Free Will Baptist Church on Little Blaine by the Rev. S. B. Ball and the Rev. Kelly Patton. Burial was made in the family cemetery. The body was taken to the home of a daughter, Mrs. Elza Short at Adams from the Young Funeral Home. Mr. Moore, a farmer, was born at Adams, on February 8,1882, a son of the late Wayne and Sarah Jane Ball Moore. He had been a member of the Free Will Baptist church for 25 years. Mrs. Ethel Wheeler, 67, of route 3, Louisa, died at her home at 12:40 a.m. Saturday after a long illness. She was born October 22, 1888, at Adams, KY, a daughter of the late Dock and America Prince Carter. Mrs. Wheeler had lived on route 3 for 12 years and formerly lived in Ashland. Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Louisa Baptist Church by the Rev. J. C. Hager, the Rev. S. B. Ball and the Rev. O'Ray Weeks. Burial was made in the Ashland Cemetery. Mrs. Wheeler was a member of the Baptist Church, the Louisa Chapter No. 292, Order of Eastern Star and the Rebekah Lodge of Louisa. Surviving are her husband, Kay Wheeler, whom she married 12 years ago; two sisters, Mrs. Saylor Runyon of Stone, KY and Mrs. H. I. Layne of Louisa; two brothers, John Carter of route 1, Louisa, and Clyde Carter of Adams, KY; 5 grandchildren. Herman Boggs, 48 of Blaine, KY died Saturday night in a Paintsville hospital after an illness of two weeks. He was born at Blaine, October 24, 1907, a son of the late John and Lucy Edwards Boggs. He was a farmer and a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors include the widow, Nola Sparks Boggs. They had been married 28 years. Other survivors are two sons, Ishmael and James Wayne at home; two brothers, Estill and Clyde, both of Blaine and one grandchild. Mrs. Mary L. Hartman Cain passed away 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles P. Shannon, 214 Jefferson Street, Louisa, after a long illness. Mrs. Cain, a daughter of the late George H. and Malinda King Kegg, was born August 4, 1868. She was 88 years, 2 months and 12 days of age. She had resided in Louisa for the past 60 years. Her first husband, Robert H. Hartman, preceded her in death in 1918 and she was preceded in death by her second husband, W. T. Cain, Sr., in 1936. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from the First Methodist Church of which she had been a lifelong member, with the Rev. Charles Perry officiating. Interment will be made in Pine Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Cain will remain a the Curtright Funeral Home until 1 p.m. Friday when she will be removed to the church to lie in state one hour prior to the funeral services. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Charles P. Shannon, Louisa, and Mrs.Thomas J. Mrs. Cora Casey, 82, died at her home on route 4, Fallsburg, Thursday of last week. Mrs. Casey was born at Fallsburg December 2, 1873, a daughter of the late Tolemus and Ann Savage Lambert. She had been a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. Her husband, James Casey, died in 1952. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. John M. Bentley and Mrs. Sam Scott of Louisa, route 4, Mrs. W. E. Holbrook of Marysville, OH and Mrs. John Hatcher of Louisa; two sisters, Mrs. E. E. Queen of Louisa, route 4, and Mrs. George Fannin of Catlettsburg; three brothers, George and Charley Lambert of Louisa, route 4 and Bud Lambert of Danville, KY; and 13 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Savage Memorial Methodist Church at Fallsburg by the Rev. Charles Perry. Burial was made in Casey Cemetery at Fallsburg. John Hammond, Jr., 65, Clifford, KY, passed away in a local hospital Tuesday at 11:15 p.m. following two weeks illness. He was born February 22, 1891, at Warfield, KY, a son of the late John and Naomi Chapman Hammond. He was a retired farmer and a veteran of World War I. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday October 20, at 2 p.m. from the Mt. Olive Church at Clifford, KY, with the Rev. Sammy Branham officiating. Interment will be made at the Maynard Cemetery, Clifford. Mrs. Sadie T. Rosenberger, 63, of Fort Gay, died at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the home of a brother, Boyd Thompson of Fort Gay, route 1, after an illness of four months. She was the widow of A. E. Rosenberger, well-known in the oil industry. Mr. Rosenberger died in April 1954. Mrs. Rosenberger was born October 11, 1892, at Fort Gay route 1, a daughter of the late William and Lou Frazier Thompson. She was a member of the Baptist Church. Mrs. Nannie Ellen Shannon, 83, died at the home of her son, Cecil C. Shannon of Columbus, OH at 7 a.m. Friday, October 12, after an illness of two years. She had lived in Louisa until two years ago when she moved to Columbus. She was the widow of A. M. Shannon, who died in 1952. Mrs. Shannon was born November 4, 1872, at Louisa, a daughter of the late Andrew L. and Mary E. Branham Shannon. She was a life member of the First Methodist Church here. Funeral services were conducted from the Curtright Funeral Home Monday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. S. B. Bail and the Rev. J. C. Hager officiating. Burial was made in Pine Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Jette Davis Webb, 68, of Ulysses, KY, died at her home at 7 p.m. Friday, after an illness of one year. She was born July 29, 1888, at Ulysses, a daughter of the late Sam and Lucinda Boyd Davis. She was married to Isadore (Bud) Webb 50 years ago. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the residence by the Rev. Grover Blevins and burial was made in the Webb Cemetery at Ulysses. Mrs. Webb had been a member of the Freewill Baptist Church 25 years. Private graveside funeral rites for Dr. Harry A. Wood, 92, who succumbed several days ago in St. Petersburg, FL will be held Saturday, October 20, at 10:30 a.m. in Pine Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Perry, pastor of the Louisa Methodist Church officiating. The ashes of dr. Wood will arrive at the Curtright Funeral Home Friday afternoon and will remain there until funeral time. His wife, Mary Northup Wood, a daughter of the late Colonel and Mrs. J. H. Northup, preceded him in death several years ago. Survivors include, two daughters, Mrs. Charles Gould and Mrs. Robert Millett, Buffalo, NY. Two sons, John and Northup Wood, preceded him in death. She also resided at Monville, WV, 6 years, Holden WV 5 years, and Catlettsburg, KY 14 years prior to her residence in Columbus. Born January 14, 1907, at Artesia, AZ, she was a daughter of the late Burnham and Sarah Sparks Roberts. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from the Carter Chapel Church, route 3, Louisa, with the Rev. Dennie Roberts, of Logan, WV officiating. Burial will be in Carter Cemetery. Elisha W. Jobe, 90, died Monday, November 12, at 2:25 a.m. at the home of a daughter, Mrs. M. L. Wright, route 3, Louisa. "Uncle Lish" as he was affectionately known at all, was born October 10,1 866, a son of the late William and Martha Chaffin Jobe. He had been a member of the Free Will Baptist Church for the past 22 years. Funeral services were conducted at the home Wednesday, November 14, with the Revs. Gallie Isaac and Fred Vanhorn officiating. Interment was made in the Jobe Cemetery. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Louise Lawson Jobe, to whom he had been married 74 years; four daughters, Mrs. Kay Chaffin of Ashville, OH, Mrs. Luther Webb, Ashland, route 2, Mrs. H. D. LEEDY, Elizabeth (Ferrell)

1865-1956

Mrs. Elizabeth Ferrell Leedy, 93, of Richardson, KY, died Wednesday night, October 30, at her home after an illness of three weeks. Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the Regular Baptist Church, Island Creek, KY, near Pikeville, by the Rev. William Hall and the Rev. Jack Thomas. Mrs. Leedy was born October 5, 1865, a daughter of the late Elisha and Nancy O'Dean Ferrell. She was a member of the Baptist Church. Her husband, William Leedy, died in 1941. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. A. J. Robinson of Georges Creek, KY; five sons, Andy Leedy of Milldesboro, KY, Bill Leedy of Pikeville, Charley Leedy of Trenton, MI, and Walter and Mont Leedy of Richardson and 26 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. LYCAN, Luther L.

Luther L. Lycan, 58, prominent Wayne County citizen, succumbed to a heart attack Wednesday evening, November 14, in Fort Gay, WV, his native town, while enroute to Louisa. Although Mr. Lycan suffered a heart attack earlier this year, he had apparently recovered, and had resumed his official responsibilities with the Wayne County Board of Education, and had been at  his desk daily and appeared in excellent health. Mr. Lycan was associated with the Wayne County school system for the past 38 years, serving as county school superintendent, principal of the Fort Gay grade school for many years, and supervisor of the hot lunch program in Wayne County schools. Mr. Lycan received his early education in the Wayne County schools and later attended Marshall College in Huntington, WV. In connection with his school work, he was active in promoting special events, such as the annual field days in rural schools, the county spelling bees and golden horseshoe tests. He not only gave freely of his time to Wayne County schools, but was also ready to served on committees when called upon, for Lawrence County schools. In addition to his school activities, Mr. Lycan was an active member of the Fort Gay Methodist Church, serving as a member of the church board, the choir, and was connected with other activities of the church. Prominent in civic affairs, he had served as recorder for the town of Fort Gay for about seventeen years, and was secretary for 33 years of Vinson Lodge, No. 66, A. F. & A. M. Fort Gay. He was for several years active in Boy Scout work and was prominently identified with Rotary International, serving as District Governor of Kentucky. He was an active member of the Louisa Rotary Club, serving as president, and prior to his death, had been secretary-treasurer for several years. He also served as postmaster of Fort Gay at one period of his life. The deceased, a son of Mrs. Louary Wilson Lycan, Fort Gay, and the late Consie Lycan, is survived by the widow, Mrs. Gladys Logan Lycan, to whom he had been married 20 years, and one son, Craig Lycan, at home, the mother, five sisters, Mrs. Verner King of Oriskany, VA, Mrs. Thomas Hatten, Washington, D. C. , Mrs. Burgess Hatten and Mrs. Harlan Hatten, Rittman, OH, and Mrs. Virgil Collinsworth, Dayton, OH. Also five brothers, Gordon of Fort Gay, route 1, Goodwin of Bartley, WV, Consie of Prichard, WV, Morris of Rittman, OH, and Clarence Lycan of Huntington, WV. Funeral services were conducted Saturday 2 p.m. from the Fort Gay Methodist Church, with the pastor, the Rev. Marcus Earp, and the Rev. Charles Perry, pastor of the Louisa Methodist Church, officiating. Mrs. H. P. Madson, formerly of Louisa, KY, died Thursday morning, November 8 at Rivera, CA, after an illness of several weeks, according to word received here by relatives. Mrs. Madson, the former Dorothy Spencer, was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Spencer, Louisa. Her husband survives. Robert Miller, 88, of Ulysses, KY, died in a local hospital at 9:45 p.m. Monday after an illness of one year. He was born August 2, 1868, at Ulysses, a son of the late Crawford and Carolyn Borders Miller. He was a farmer and lived at Ulysses all his life. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday (today) at the Chestnut Grove Church at Lowmansville, KY, by the Rev. Scott Griffith of Beattyville, KY, and burial will be in Borders Cemetery at Ulysses. Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. Bill Moore of Columbus, Mrs. John Bryan and Mrs. Ray Murray, both of Ashland, Mrs. Virgil Chandler of Cleveland, OH, and Mrs. R. A. Beecher of Columbus, and Miss Caroline Miller of Ashland; four sons, Charlie and Ray Miller of Ashland, W. H. Ronnie Patrick, infant twin son of Lawrence and Geneva Miller Patrick of Louisa, died in a Louisa hospital at 1 p.m. Monday. Graveside services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Patrick Cemetery by the Rev. Gallie Isaac. The body was at the Curtright Funeral Home until an hour before the services. Survivors, in addition to the parents, include four sisters, Barbara, Gladys Pauline, Joyce Irene and Anna Ruth, at home; three brothers, Billy Joe, Lawrence Jr., and Bobbie, Ronnie's twin and the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Della Ray Miller of Louisa, route 2. SCAGGS, Emma (Marcum)

Mrs. Emma Scaggs, 65, a well-known Wayne, WV teacher and wife of Attorney Fisher F. Scaggs of Wayne, and a niece of R. L. Vinson, Louisa, died Sunday, October 28 in a Huntington hospital. Death came one day after Mrs. Scaggs had entered the hospital. She had been in declining health for several months and underwent an operation last May, but was able to resume her position this year and taught until about two weeks before her death. A teacher for 35 years, Mrs. Scaggs also was active in church and club work for many years. She began teaching at Kenova and since her marriage to Mr. Scaggs, had been teaching at the Wayne grade school. Mrs. Scaggs was a first cousin of the late Fred Vinson, who served as chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. She was born at Louisa, KY. She was a daughter of Mrs. Rebecca Vinson Marcum of Ceredo, who was 87 this Tuesday, and the late James O. Marcum. She was a graduate of Ceredo-Kenova High School and Marshall College, and was a lifelong member of the Ceredo Congregational Church. Mr. and Mrs. Scaggs were married June 30, 1914. Funeral services were conducted from the Wayne Methodist Church Wednesday, October 24, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Orville Esteppe, Dr. Curtis Talmadge, Gallie King and Wesley M. McKinney officiating. Burial was made in Woodmere Cemetery. Surviving in addition to the mother and husband, are a son, James Franklin Scaggs of Wayne; a sister, Mrs. Walter I. Mrs. Sally Hammond Shannon, 82, died Sunday morning 7:30 a.m. after a brief illness at the home of her son, William G. (Tom) Shannon, of Louisa, route 5, near Clifford, KY. She had lived with her son for the past 29 years. Her husband, Ulysses G. Shannon, died in 1949. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the home with the Rev. Roland Justice and the Rev. Nelson Hughes officiating. Burial was made in the Shannon Cemetery, near Clifford. Mrs. Shannon was born June 20, 1874, in Lawrence County, the daughter of the late William C. and Elizabeth Fluty Hammond. She had been a member of the Baptist Church for 49 years. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Erma Hargis of Louisa, route 1, Mrs. Bertha Marcum of Oceans, WV, Mrs. Betty Lane of McAndrews, KY, Mrs. Columbia Olwine of Dayton, OH; three sons, William G. Shannon, with whom she made her home, Clarence Shannon of Louisa, and Lawrence Shannon of Pilgrim Knob, VA; 38 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren. VANHOOSE, John

John Vanhoose, 72, of Ulysses, KY and formerly of Richardson,  KY, died early Tuesday at the C & O Hospital, Huntington, WV after an illness of one month. Mr. Vanhoose was prominently known in the Big Sandy Valley of Eastern Kentucky, having been a C & O foreman for 45 years, and due to his faithful service and large family he was selected Working Father of the Year, in 1947, by the National Fathers' Day Committee in New York City. Mr. Vanhoose was born January 20,1 884, at Henrietta, KY, a son of the late Wallace and Julia Fannin Vanhoose. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 10 a.m. from the Walnut Grove Freewill Baptist Church of which he had been a member of three years. The Rev. Gallie Isaac and Rev. Bird Webb will officiate and interment will be made in the Vanhoose Cemetery at Henrietta. The body will remain at the Curtright Funeral Home until 2:30 Friday when it will be taken to the home at Ulysses, KY to remain until the funeral hour Sunday. She was born October 10, 1918, at Louisa, route 3, a daughter of Lillie Richards Carter and the late Joseph Carter. Funeral services were held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. from the First Christian Baptist Church, Ironton, with the Rev. Carl P. Smith officiating. She had been a member of the church for 2 years. Interment was made Saturday in the Carter Cemetery, route 3, Louisa, near Five Forks. Jeff Chandler, 58, of Lowmansville, KY, died Wednesday, December 5, at his home after an illness of six weeks. At the time he became ill, he was serving as secretary of Chandlersville Masonic Lodge 356. Mrs. Eva Crabtree, 57, passed away in a local hospital Monday at 9:45 p.m. following an illness of 19 years. She was born at Branchland, WV, July 24, 1899. She lived at Webbville, KY 54 years. She had resided in Louisa with her mother, Sarah Triplett, for the past three years. Her husband, Wesley Crabtree, passed away 32 years ago. She was a daughter of Sarah Holbrook Triplett and the late Hannon Crabtree. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 14, at 2 p.m. from the Hicksville schoolhouse, with the Rev. Jack Perry, Felix Skaggs and Custer Bishop officiating. Interment will be made in the Adams Cemetery at Hicksville. She had been a member of the Christian Baptist Church for 17 years. The body was removed from the Curtright Funeral Home to the home of her mother, Mrs. Triplett, Louisa. A former Adams, KY youth was one of three persons killed in a traffic mishap near Urbana, OH on Saturday of last week. Funeral rites for the victim, Don Dixon, 19, of Springfield, OH, formerly of Adams was conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Young Funeral Home here by the Rev. Lucian Mounts of South Vienna, OH. Burial was made in the Carter Cemetery, at Adams. The body was brought to the funeral home here from the Neff Funeral Home at Urbana.   1. Sherman Fyffe, 65, a former Louisa resident, who for six years made his home with a daughter, Mrs. George W. Myers, in Canton, OH, died Monday morning of last week in the Grant Hospital, Columbus, OH from a heart condition. The last 18 months he was in Columbus in the home of another daughter, Mrs. Fern Hinkle. While in Canton he had been employed by the E. W. Bliss Co., Babcock Printing Press Co., and the Hoover Co. Mr. Fyffe was born in Elliott County, KY a son of the late Joseph and Mary Ann Hutchinson Fyffe. He was an army veteran of World war I, and was a member of Hepburn Lodge F :& AM, at Sandy Hook, KY. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mollie Fyffe; two other daughters, Mrs. C. A. Hewitt of Canton and Mrs. William Oliver, Dayton; four sisters, Mrs. Effie Skaggs and Miss Nora Fyffe of Columbus and Mrs. W. J. Bricky and Mrs. Charles Norris of Sandy Hook; one brother, Alonzo Fyffe of Sandy Hook and 7 grandchildren. The Rev. Franklin L. GAMBILL, Minnie A. (Pigg)

Mrs. Minnie Alva Gambill, 71, mother of a prominent Blaine, KY family, succumbed Thursday, December 13 at 6 p.m. at her home after an extended illness. She was a daughter of the late Theodore and Columbia Roberts Pigg. She had been a member of the Blaine Christian Church for 55 years, the Order of Eastern Star for several years and was an active member until her illness 18 months ago. The deceased was married to Hugh C. Gambill 55 years ago, and to this union was born three sons and two daughters, all of whom survive, and have made for themselves prominent places in the field of education as well as the professional field. Paul Gambill is principal of Blaine High School, Blaine, KY, Mrs. David Washburn, of Manhattan Beach, CA and Mrs. O. J. Moore, Georgetown, KY, are both former teacher in the Lawrence County Schools; two other sons, Dr. Carl N. Gambill and Dr. Earl E. Gambill are prominent members of the medical staff at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. Other survivors include one sister, Mrs. Walter Diamond, of Lucasville, OH, ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Sunday from the First Christian Church, Louisa, with the pastor, Rev. Leslie E. Longard, and the Rev. Ova Beard, of Sciotoville, OH, officiating. Alonzo Hinkle, 78, a Charley, KY farmer, died at 5:30 a.m. Friday. Mr. Hinkle was born December 27, 1878, in Menifee County, KY, a son of the late Jasper and Mary Elizabeth Daniels Hinkle. He had been ill 8 months. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Sunday at the residence with the Rev. Willie Moore and the Rev. W. S. Boggs officiating. Oscar F. Hinkle, 67, of 101 Short St., Paintsville, died at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday at his home after an illness of three weeks. He was born January 6, 1889 at Peach Orchard, KY, a son of the late Randolph and Charlotte Harris Hinkle. He had been employed by the C & O for 45 years as a telegraph operator. He was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church at Paintsville, Richardson Masonic Lodge No. 609, and the Order of Railway Telegraphers. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Richardson Methodist Church by the Rev. M. R. Thompson of Paintsville. Burial will be in the Hinkle Cemetery at Richardson. the body will be removed from the Curtright Funeral Home to the residence at Richardson at 2 p.m. today. Freeman Kelly, 28, formerly of Martha, KY, died in an East Chicago, IN hospital Friday night after an illness of several weeks. He had lived in Chicago for six years and was employed as a steelworker by the General American Transportation Co. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at the Martha Church of God with the Rev. Emory Ferguson, the Rev. Monroe Cantrell and the Rev. Emerson Collier officiating. Burial was made in Sturgill Cemetery at Martha. Mr. Kelly was born at Martha, a son of Cassie and Cloma Ferguson Kelly who survive. Other survivors are the wife, Mrs. Ethel Sparks Kelly; a daughter, Janet Sue and two sons, Miles Nelson and Cassie Allen, all at home in Chicago; and a brother, Raymond Kelly of Columbus, OH. Robert Mabry, 54, of 114 East Lock Avenue, died at 10:10 a.m. Friday at his home. Formerly a farmer at Gimlet, KY, he had lived in Louisa for five months. He was born July 7, 1902, a son of James and Sarah Mauk Mabry of Gimlet. Funeral services were conducted 1 p.m. Monday at the Gimlet Baptist Church, Gimlet, KY with the Rev. Lloyd Jordan officiating. Burial was made in the family cemetery at Gimlet.   1. J. Martin 45, of Wabash, IN, formerly of Odds and Van Lear, KY, was killed Saturday night in an automobile accident near Huntington, IN. The mishap occurred during a snowstorm. Mr. Martin was killed when his car skidded off the icy road and struck a utility pole which went through the car causing his death. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Van Lear Free Will Baptist Church. Burial was made in Collins cemetery at Odds. He was born August 1, 1911, at Edgar, KY, a son of Mrs. Josephine Cornett Martin of Fallsburg, KY and the late T. J. Martin. Rancel McKinzie, 10 day old son of Willard and Pearl Smith McKinzie of Torchlight, KY, died Wednesday morning in an Ashland hospital. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. today in the family cemetery at Torchlight with the Rev. Gallie Isaac officiating. Other survivors are a twin sister, three other sisters, three brothers, and the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Jane Smith of Coleman, KY. MOORE, James Monroe

1875-1956

James Monroe Moore, 81, a native and lifelong resident of Blaine, KY, this county, died at 11:45 p.m. Thursday night in a Louisa hospital after an illness of the past two months. Mr. Moore was born April 22, 1875, a son of the late John and Patsy Mullins Moore. He was a retired farmer and livestock dealer. Surviving are his wife, Nora McGuire Moore to whom he had been married for 58 years, four daughters, Mrs. Dorsey Ratliff of Mt. Sterling, KY, Mrs. Russell Boggs of Ashland, Mrs. Dewey Ross of Columbus, OH and Miss Ola Moore at home; one sons, Ellis Moore of Columbus, a sister, Mrs. Nancy Sanders at Victorville, CA; a brother, Paris Moore of Blaine, 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Sunday morning at 10"30 in the Church of God at Blaine with the Rev. Gallie Isaac officiating. Burial was made in the Moore Cemetery, Blaine. PAULEY, William

1884-1956

William Pauley, 72, of route 2 Fort Gay, WV died Thursday of last week at 1:15 p.m. after being stricken suddenly while en route to his home in Fort Gay after visiting a physician's office in Louisa. Mr. Pauley, a sawmill operator and farmer, was born January 4, 1884, near Fort Gay, a son of the late William and Elizabeth K. Jarrell Pauley. He had spent almost all his life as a resident of Fort Gay, route 2 and had been a member of the Baptist Church for 30 years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ona Thompson Pauley; one son, Cecil C. Pauley of route 2, Fort Gay; two sisters, Mrs. Daisey Vinson of Fort Gay, route 2 and Mrs. Garland Thompson of Fort Gay and 3 grandchildren. The body was removed from the Curtright Funeral Home in Louisa to the residence on route 2, Fort Gay, Saturday morning. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in the old Pleasant Baptist Church, Fort Gay, route 2, with the Revs. Burl Taylor and Carmie Crabtree officiating. PORTER, Cecil R.

Cecil R. Porter, 43, of Fort Gay and Ceredo, WV, died Thursday morning in a Mansfield, OH hospital. He suffered a heart attack while at work at the Mansfield Tire & Rubber Co. and died shortly after being taken to the hospital. Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Curtright Funeral Home, Louisa, with the Rev. Homer A. Pelfrey officiating. Burial was made in the Workman Cemetery on Mill Creek. Mrs. Porter, a teacher at Ceredo Elementary School, was en route to Mansfield when her husband died. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Lillian Napier Porter; a daughter, Elizabeth Mae Porter of Ceredo; two brothers, H. Stewart Porter and Walter Porter of Mill Creek and a sister, Mrs. W. C. PRESTON, Kitty L. (Rice)

1878-1956

Mrs. Kitty Rice Preston, 78, of Georges Creek, died in a Louisa hospital Sunday afternoon after a four-month illness.  She was born in Staffordsville, KY, a daughter of the late Wallace B. and Elizabeth Butler Rice. Her husband, Eugene Preston, died in 1934.  Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in Belle’s Chapel of the Free Will Baptist Church at Georges Creek.  Mrs. Preston had been a member of that church for 62 years. The Rev. Arlie Blackburn officiated and burial was made in the Preston Cemetery.  Surviving is one son, Harper Preston owner of the Preston Artificial Limb Co. of Louisa. The body remained at the Curtright Funeral Home until a half hour before the funeral services. Big Sandy News, December 13, 1956

 

RATCLIFFE, Nancy Ellen (Johnson)

1864-1956

Mrs. Nancy Ellen Ratcliffe, 92, Fort Gay, WV, died Friday morning in a Louisa hospital. She was born at Freeburn, Pike County, KY, on January 31, 1864, a daughter of the late Payton and Susan Mount Johnson. Her father came to this country from Ireland and her mother was a native of Pennsylvania. She was a lifelong member of the Baptist Church. Surviving are three sons, Dolph Johnson of Oak Hill, OH, Chester Ratcliffe of Fort Gay, WV, and Fred Ratcliffe of Bloomington, IL; one daughter, Mrs. Robert Ross of Akron, OH; two stepsons, Henry Ratcliffe of Matewan, WV and Butler Ratcliffe of Fort Gay; 31 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. The body was taken tot he home of Chester Ratcliffe at Fort Gay from the Curtright Funeral Home, Louisa, Saturday. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Fort Gay Methodist Church by the Rev. Marcus Estep and the Rev. Burial Taylor. Burial was made in the Bartram Cemetery in Fort Gay. SHORT, Jennie (Brown)

Mrs. Jennie Brown Short, 79, of Louisa, died Tuesday morning in a local hospital after an illness of two years. She was born May 8, 1877 at Millers Creek, Johnson Co., KY the daughter of the late Kiah and Marian Auxier Brown and had lived in Louisa for the past 42 years. Her husband, James Short, died November 12, 1947. Mrs. Short was a member of the First Methodist Church of Louisa. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday (today) at 1:30 p.m. at the Young Funeral Home with the Rev. A. J. Roberts, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Hill Cemetery. Survivors include two sons, O. J. Short and Jimmy Short, both of Louisa; two sisters, Mrs. Nora Haws of Louisa and Mrs. Angie Daniels of River, KY; six brothers, John and Elijah Brown of Prestonsburg, KY, Lon Brown of Wheelersburg, OH, Dan Brown of Georges Creek, KY, Kiah Brown of Elk City, OK, and Ed Brown of Fort Gay, WV and 5 grandchildren. Millard Fillmore Short, 83, retired farmer, died Monday at 12:20 a.m. in King's Daughters' Hospital, Ashland. He resided on route 4, Louisa. Mr. Short was born December 7, 1873, son of James and Martha Chaffin Short and was a member of the Yatesville Methodist Church for 40 years. He was also a member of the Apperson Lodge No. 195 F & AM who conducted Masonic rites at the grave. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Yatesville Methodist Church, with the Rev. Fred Vanhorn and the Rev. Lloyd Jordan, officiating. Burial was made in the family cemetery at Louisa. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Laura Leedy Short, six daughters, Mrs. Joe Rinehart, Huntington, WV, Mrs. J. Francis Kelly, Louisville, KY, Mrs. Claudia Justice of Charleston, WV, Mrs. Sherwood E. Sparks and Mrs. Bill Little, Laurel Creek, WV, and Mrs. Joe Vivrett, Louisville; four sons, Raymond Short, route 3, Louisa, Harland Short, route 4, Louisa, Walter Short of Ashland,  Millard F. Short, Jr., of Logan, WV, 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. The body remained at the Young Funeral Home. It was taken to the church one hour before services. SPARKS, Nelson T.

1899-1956

Funeral rites were conducted Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Enterprise Baptist Church, Martha, KY for Nelson Tate Sparks, 57, prominent, well-beloved and lifelong resident, with the Rev. Emmerson Collier, pastor, and the Rev. Charles Perry, pastor of the Louisa Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was made in the family cemetery over looking the residence. Mr. Sparks was born January 1, 1899, a son of the late Laban T. Sparks and Emily Lyon Sparks, pioneer residents of the Martha section. He had been associated with the Ashland Oil and Refining Company for the past 25 years and had been superintendent of the company's holdings in the Blaine-Martha section for the past two years. He was a member of the Jake Rice Masonic Lodge No. 606 Blaine, KY, was worthy patron of the Blaine Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, No. 202, and also a member of El Hasa Temple of the Shrine at Ashland, KY. In addition to activities in fraternal organizations, Mr. Sparks was active in all community affairs. He was a friend in need to all his neighbors, never refusing to help them when called upon. The appreciation of his unselfish and useful life was expressed in words, deeds and profuse floral offering by friends and relatives. The church building, where his funeral rites were held Sunday, was constructed many years ago by his late father and was presented by him to the Enterprise Baptist denomination two years ago. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Nancy Griffith Sparks, whom he married 26 years ago; two sisters, Mrs. O. B. Kazee of Blaine and Mrs. Emory Fannin of Portsmouth, OH: and five brothers, Sheriff M. E. Sparks, Louisa, Charley Sparks, of Portsmouth, Herman Sparks of Dayton, OH, Claude Sparks of Louisville and Paul Sparks of Oklahoma City, OK. Joyce Earllean Spears, six day old daughter of Earl Edward and Carolyn Jean Newell Spears of Blaine, KY, died in a Louisa hospital at noon Wednesday. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today in the family cemetery in Blaine. Additional survivors include the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William K. George W. Sturgill, 84, resident of Elliott County for the past 15 years, died Tuesday at 1:45 p.m. at his home after an illness of six years. He was a retired farmer and sawmill operator. A son of the late Dave and Rena Boggs Sturgill, he was born March 25, 1872, at Hannah, KY. His father, known to residents of that section as "Uncle Dave" was a pioneer Baptist preacher. Funeral rites will be held Thursday (today) at 10:30 at the Enterprise Baptist Church, Martha, KY, with the Rev. Emory Ferguson and the Rev. Emmerson Collier officiating. Interment will be in the Sturgill Cemetery at Martha. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Ida Stamper Sturgill; three daughters, Mrs. Earl Johnson of Pinkerington, OH, Mrs. Clinton Spivey of War, WV, and Mrs. Allen Moody of Owensboro, KY; four sons, Nelson Sturgill and Gene Sturgill, Martha, KY, Harry Sturgill, Pickerington, OH, and Lonnie Sturgill, Reynoldsburg, OH; one sister, Mrs. Vessie Coldiron, War, WV; 40 grandchildren , and several great grandchildren. Lola Gay Webb, new born daughter of Herbert and Lydia Plummer Webb, of route 2, Fort Gay, WV, died in a local hospital Wednesday December 5, at 6 a.m. Graveside services were conducted Thursday (today) at 1 p.m. at the Lynch Cemetery, Salt Peter, WV, with the Rev. Willie Robertson officiating. Survivors are: mother and father; one sister, Dianna Lynn; two brothers, Herbert Ray and Larry Dale, at home; one half brother, William Ronald Plummer, route 1, Fort Gay, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Plummer, maternal grandparents, Fort Gay and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Webb, Salt Peter, WV. The body was removed Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. from the Curtright Funeral Home to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Webb to remain until funeral time. Big Sandy News, December 13, 1956
