Funeral services for Jack E. Adams, 66, route 4, Louisa, were conduced December 28, in Young Funeral Home by the Rev. Amon Diamond. Burial was in the Burke Cemetery. Mr. Adams died December 25, at his residence. Mr. Adams was born August 25, 1913, at Madge a son of the late Smith and Ida Berry Adams. He was a retired heavy equipment operator for Kentucky Highway Department. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mabel Maynard Adams; three daughters, Mrs. Norma Jean Sparks of route 4, Louisa, Mrs. Joy Ann Ladd of Lufkin, TX and Mrs. Phyllis Burke of Pataskala, OH; two sons, Jack Adams of Columbus and Ronald Adams of West Jefferson, OH; two sisters, Mrs. Eva Mae Hogan of Las Vegas, NV and Mrs. Gladys Diamond of route 4, Louisa, two brothers, Henry J. Funeral services for George Artrip, 69, of route 2, Fort Gay were conducted Monday, December 31, in Wilson Chapel Church. Burial was in Hampton Cemetery. Mr. Artirp died December 29. Mr. Artrip was born May 14, 1910, in Wayne County, WV, a son of the late Boyd and Dixie Hardwick Artrip. He was a retired and disabled coal miner and a member of the Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Beulah Wilson Artrip; two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Field of Greenwick, OH and Mrs. Sybil Hospkins of Shelbiana; three sons, Ray and Glenn Artrip, both at home, and Charles Artrip, of Mansfield, OH; two step daughters, Mrs. Donna Cummings and Mrs. Dottie Trumpower, both of Denver, CO; four sisters, Mrs. Frances Pratt of Radnor, WV, Mrs. Myrtle Kirk of Columbus, OH, Mrs. Carrie Taylor of Nolin, WV and Mrs. Anna Blevins of Hatfield; two brothers, Jack and James Artrip, both of Mansfield; 17 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Mr. Castle died December 25, in Louisa Community Hospital. Mr. Castle was born June 4, 1917, at Georges Creek, a son of the late Harry and Sella Prudent Castle. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Jean Blackburn Castle; a daughter, Mrs. Delores Collins of Kenova, a son, the Rev. John W. Funeral services for Lawrence County native Marion H. Cochran, 91, Louisville, were conducted, December 28, in Young Funeral Home by the Rev. Gallie Isaac. Burial was in the Cochran Cemetery. Mr. Cochran died December 25, in a Louisville hospital. Mr. Cochran was born November 28, 1888, at route 1, Louisa, a son of the late Henry and Julia Moore Cochran. He was a retired coal miner. His wife, Mrs. Virginia Thompson Cochran, died in 1967. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Arthur Ragland, of Louisville; a son, Henry Cochran of Louisa and a grandchild; two great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Funeral services for infant Tracy Lynn Coffey were conducted January 4, at 2 p.m. in Young Funeral Home Chapel. Infant Coffey was dead at birth at the Louisa Community Hospital, December 31. She was the daughter of Edford and Eula Reed Coffey of route 4, Louisa. Survivors include one sister, Stephanie, at home; two half brothers, Mark and Mitchell Limings both of Blaine; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Coffey of route 4, Louisa and the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Reed of Waverly, OH. Funeral services for Ked Davis, 77, route 5, Louisa, will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Young's Chapel. Mr. Davis was dead on arrival at the Louisa Community Hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack, January 7. Mr. Davis was born July 4, 1902, at Pilgrim, KY. He was the son of the late John and Sarah Jewell Davis and was retired from the United Fuel Gas Co. Survivors include his wife, Jessie M. Fitzpatrick; four daughters, Mrs. Jane Shipman of Columbus, OH, Mrs. Gay Hanchar, Dunnellon, FL, Miss Linda Davis of Columbus and Mrs. Alfred Gartin of route 5, Louisa, three sons, Raymond Davis, Chatteroy, WV, James Davis of Flatwoods and Calvin Davis of route 5, Louisa, 16 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Ethel Gibson, 58, Carey, OH, formerly of Chapman were conducted Sunday, January 27, at the Bristoll Funeral Home in Carey. Mrs. Gibson died January 24, in Blanchard Valley Hospital in Findlay, OH. She was born February 12, 1921, in Lawrence County, a daughter of the late William D. and Rose Belle Miller Chapman. She was a member of the Chapman United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, Allen Gibson; four sons, Kenneth, Ronnie and David Gibson, all of Carey and Bill Gibson of Tiffin, OH; six daughters, Mrs. Jeanette Perkins of Swamp Branch, Mrs. Betty St. Clarr, Mrs. Patsy Blair, Mrs. Sue Lake and Miss Jackie Gibson, all of Carey and Mrs. Mary Hall of Columbus. Other survivors include four brothers, Billy, Haskell and James Chapman, all of New Buffalo, MI; and George Chapman of Flatwoods; five sisters, Mrs. Maxie Parsons of North Carolina, Mrs. Lydia Franklin and Mrs. Lenora Meredith, both of Catlettsburg, Mrs. Betty Loar of Virginia and Mrs. Myrtle Robinette of Chapman; 37 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services for Mae Kelley, 77, of Blaine were Thursday, January 3 at 2 p.m. at Old Hood United Baptist Church, Blaine. Mrs. Kelley died December 31 at Mercy Hospital in Columbus, OH after an extended illness. Mrs. Kelley was born April 19,1 902, at Elliott County, and was the daughter of the late Jess and Sarah Kitchen Triplett. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard H. Kelley who died July 6, 1979. Survivors include two sons, Hubert Kelley, Blacklick, OH, and Earl Kelley, Anaheim, CA; two sister, Mrs. Della Caldwell of Elliott County, and Mrs. Goldie Kelley of Ashland, KY; one brother, Homer Triplett of Dehue, WV; 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Funeral services for Everett McClure, 76, of Ashland, formerly of Lawrence County were conducted Thursday, January 24, at the Paintsville Funeral Home. Mr. McClure died January 21, in King's Daughters' Hospital. He was born September 20, 1903, in Lawrence County, a son of the late Millard and Margaret Pack McClure. He was a retired employee of Armco Inc., a member of the First Methodist Church and of BOP Elks Lodge 350. His wife, Mrs. Margaret Honeycutt McClure, died in 1976. Surviving are two brothers, Theodore McClure of Flat Gap and Dewey McClure of Wittensville; and three sisters, Mrs. Vienna Murray and Mrs. Laura Castle, both of Thealka and Mrs. Mollie Steele of Lowmansville. Flora McKinnon, 80, of Blaine died December 31, in Louisa Community Hospital. She was born September 30, 1899, at Flat Gap, KY. She was the daughter of the late Jackson and Jinny Cheek McKinnon. Mrs. McKinnon is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Martin Fraley, Greenup, KY, Mrs. Gladys Kidd, of Lexington and Mrs. Pearl Thompson of Blaine; one brother, Lon McKinnon, also of Blaine and several nieces and nephews. She was employed by the Lawrence County Board of Education as a cook at Blaine School until her retirement. Mr. Moore died December 23, at Branchland. Mr. Moore was born February 27, 1897, in Lawrence County, a son of the late Samuel Frederick and Nettie Spurlock Moore. He was a retired Norfolk and Western Railway employee, a member of the Apostolic Church of God, a veteran of World War I and of the American Legion. His wife, Mrs. Sadie Shannon Moore, died in September. ADAMS, David

Funeral services for 59 years old David Adams of Columbus, believed to have been murdered at the residence, were conducted, January 26 in Columbus with burial there. He was a son of the late Dave and Georgia Wellman Adams of the Oak Hill section of Lawrence County. Franklin County sheriff's deputies found the Columbus fuel company dispatcher's body in the front room January 23. Police said he was shot in the head and back. Capt. Ron Hardman said Mr. Adams apparently surprised a burglar who had broken a rear storm door to enter the one story brick home. A red and white Jones Fuel Co., truck, Mr. Adams had been driving was reported missing. It born Ohio license 4HU589. Mr. Adams was a nephew of the late Rance Adams. Surviving include his wife, Kathryn; sons, Ronald and Ricky, daughters, Patricia Jones and Linda Fink; 9 grandchildren; sisters, Jane Easter, Williamsport, Ruth Lingo, Circleville, Marie Kerns, Massieville, and Evelyn Immell, Chillicothe. Funeral services for Mrs. Addie Moore Boggs, 74, of Blaine were conducted Tuesday, February 12, in Caines Creek Free Will Baptist Church by minister Bondi Salyers. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery. Mrs. Boggs died 1:30 a.m. February 10 in Louisa Community Hospital following an extended illness. Mrs. Boggs was born August 20, 1905 in Lawrence County, a daughter of the late Paris and Sarah Bowling Moore. She was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Joe Boggs, a sister, Mrs. Eddie West of Lucasville, OH; two brothers, George Moore of Ashland and Willis Moore of Florida and several nieces and nephews. BOHL, John

1890-1980

Funeral services for John Bohl, 89, of Louisa were conduced February 2, in Young Funeral Home. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery. Mr. Bohl died January 31, in Louisa Community Hospital. Mr. Bohl was born October 1, 1890, at Cashton, WS, a son of the late Henry and Mary Eiden Bohl. He was retired from the Leatherwood Co as plant Superintendent. His wife, Mrs. Emma Mae Rood Bohl, died in 1979. After attending Dairy School at the University of Wisconsin, he worked for dairy farms in Wisconsin and Ohio before going to Williamson, WV to be a manager of the LeRoy Dairy Company. In early 1930, he was sent to Louisa to open and manage its branch there. When the firm was brought by the Leatherwood Company in 1954, he was sent to Bluefield, WV as plant superintendent of its operations there. In 1971, he and his wife, returned to Louisa to live. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Edgar Boggs of Louisa and Mrs. Glenn E. Nippert of Newport, RI; 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Big Sandy News, February 6, 1980

 

CALDWELL, Troy L.

Funeral services for Webbville native Troy L. Caldwell, 72, of Plain City, OH were conducted February 10 in Plainfield with burial there. The 28 year old veteran-employee-retiree of Jaeger Machine Co., died February 8 at the residence. He was a member of the Union Baptist Freewill Baptist Church and the son of the late Joe and Della Tolliver Caldwell. Mrs. Clay, born December 15, at Clifford, a daughter of Samuel and Frances Derifield Branham, died February 16, in Lakeland General Hospital. The former school teacher and social worker in Richland County, OH Welfare Department retired in 1976, and was a graduate of Morehead State Teachers College. She was a member of Park Avenue Baptist Church and Ruth Chapter 17, Order of Eastern Star. Surviving are her husband, Alonzo L; two sons, Robert Daniel Clay of Columbus and William Kent Clay of Los Angeles; six grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. R. E. He was a retired agent for the N & W Railway for 40 years. He was past master and a 50 year member of Apperson Masonic Lodge No. 195, Louisa, past High Priest and 50 year member of Louisa Royal Arch Chapter No. 95. He also was a member of Everett Council No. 15 R & SM, Ashland Commandry No. 28, El Hasa Shrine Temple and White Shrine No. 10 Ashland; Order of Eastern Star and Order of Odd Fellow of Louisa and the Freewill Baptist Church. James Lawrence Prichard, head of the bank since 1975, died February 28, in Louisa Community Hospital following an extended illness. He had been a member of the bank's board of directors since 1951. Mr. Prichard was born November 22, 1904, in Boyd County, a son of the late James and Della Sexton Prichard. He was a member of the Apperson Lodge 195 F & AM, Louisa Chapter 95 Royal Arch Masons, a Kentucky Colonel and member of the Louisa United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bessie Hardin Prichard, a daughter, Mrs. Cecil D. Thompson of Louisa, two sons, Lawrence County High School principal Lewis Prichard of St. Petersburg, FL and Russell Prichard of Columbus. Seven grandchildren, Mrs. Scott (Toni) Jenks, St. Albans, WV, Tami Thompson and Bobby Prichard, both of Lexington, Mrs. Dana (Debbie) Deering, Covington, KY, Terry Prichard of Missoula, MT, Bryan Prichard and Lavonne Prichard of Chehalis, WA and two great grandchildren. She was born December 9, 1916 at Basset Station, WS, the daughter of the late John and Emma Mae Rood Bohl. Mrs. Boggs was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar E. Boggs who died August 31, 1979. Funeral services for Randall Freeman, 20, Aberdeen, OH, who died from falling92 feet while working on construction, were conducted April 6, in Maysville with burial there. Mr. Freeman was killed instantly after falling March 26 from a scaffold at a power plant at Aberdeen. He was a 1943 graduate of the University of Louisville School of Medicine; a member of the American Medical Association; and the Kentucky Medical Association and a member of the Louisa Free Will Baptist Church. He was a Navy veteran of World War I, a member of the Clarence Fields Post 76 American Legion and was a retired employee of Armco, Inc. and had retired in 1962. She was born January 12, 1881, at Louisa, KY, the daughter of Ulysses and Sara F. Wilson. She was the sister of Tom Wilson and Dick Wilson, deceased, and Claude T. Wilson, who resides in Louisa, KY. She has resided in Huntington since 1917 and was a retired seamstress in the alteration department of the Princess Shop in Huntington. She was a member of Central Christian Huntington, the Y. W. C. A. Conference Club and the Mothers Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Floyd Wellman in 1937. The lives of a former Louisan, his three children and a truck driver were snuffed out in a fiery smashup on Interstate 40 Saturday in the Smokey Mountains near Asheville, NC. Burned beyond recognition were Spruce Pine, NC, physician Charles Jefferson (Charley Jeff) Wilson, 46, three children, 19 year old Doris Elaine Wilson, a college student, Diana Wilson, 17 and Gregory Wilson, 14, both at home and the unidentified driver of a tractor truck. According to a family spokesman the family was headed into the Smokey Mountains for a weekend hiking trip. The incident on the four lane divided I-40 occurred near the Asheville exit. Dr. Wilson was headed south and the tractor-truck which experienced a blowout was traveling north. It sped out of control across the median crashing head-on into the Wilson vehicle. The spokesman quoted police that the truck's gasoline tank exploded, erupting into a fiery mass. Dr. Wilson's wife, Patricia, whom he met while a student at Berea College died in 1979 of cancer. Dr. Wilson was born September 22, 1933 in Eldon, MO, a son of Carmie and Dora Vernon Wilson of Louisa. He graduated in 1951 from Louisa High School as class valedictorian; and the University of Louisville Belknap School of Medicine. Following completion of internship in Louisville Baptist Hospital, the Wilsons moved to Spruce Pine. She was a North Carolinan. Dr. Wilson practiced in Spruce Pine about 15 years. Additional survivors are two sisters, Mrs. Betty Morris of Portsmouth and Mrs. Sarah Weideman of Ottway, OH; five aunts, Daisy Emmons, Laura Stanfill, Genoa Britton and Ernestine Caudill, all of Louisa and Mrs. Willie Johnstone of Orlando, FL. Funeral services for Lawrence County native and ex-school teacher Mrs. Maude Miller Webb, 81, of Ceredo, were conducted May 15, in the First Baptist Church of Ceredo by the Rev. Hubert Six. Burial was in Ashland Cemetery. Mrs. Webb died May 13 in St. Mary's Hospital in Huntington following a brief illness. Mrs. Webb was born March 30, 1899, in Lawrence county, a daughter of the lat J. Fred Miller, Sr., and Arvilla Taylor Miller. She was a graduate of Kentucky Normal College, was a retired school teacher with the Lawrence County schools and was a retired grocery merchant in Ceredo. She had resided in Ceredo for 43 years, was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ceredo, a member of the Navy Mothers Club and of the Order of the Eastern Star of Ceredo. Her husband, David G. Webb, Sr., died in 1962. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Dale Mautz of Ashland, and Mrs. Ruth Ann Miller of Tallmadge, OH; a son, David G. Webb, Jr., of Kensington, MD; a sister, Mrs. Edgar Layne of Ashland; four brothers, J. Fred Miller and Carl E. Miller both of Ashland, H. D. Funeral services for former Louisan Jerry Vaughan Arrington, 28, of Logan , WV were conducted June 14 in the First Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery. Mr. Arrington died June 10 in Logan. Mr. Arrington was born April 24, 1952, in Louisa, a son of Mrs. Cloral Boggs Arrington and the late Fred Arrington . He was general manager for the Rebel Coal Co.'s Logan office, attended Louisa schools and Ashland Community College. He attended Morehead State University and was a member of the Alpha Phi Iota fraternity. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of the Louisa Baptist church. Funeral services for former Louisan Roy York Fitzpatrick, 78, of Columbus, were conducted July 4 in Young Funeral Home by the Rev. Olen Kearns. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery. Mr. Fitzpatrick died July 1, in Doctors' Hospital in Columbus following an extended illness. Mr. Fitzpatrick was born September 22, 1901 in Wayne County, WV, a son of the late Ulysses and Jessie York Fitzpatrick. He was a retired U. S. Postal Service worker and a member of the Glenhayes Freewill Baptist Church. His wife, Mrs. Lexie Bartram Fitzpatrick, died in 1969. Mrs. Halsey died July 2. Mrs. Halsey was born February 26, 1902 at Dixon, WV, a daughter of the late William and Serena Thompson Jennings. She was a member of the Elizabeth Jarrell Baptist Church. Her husband, Carl Halsey, preceded her in death. Her husband, Arthur Kitts died in 1974. She was a member of Oak Grove Church. Survivors include six sons, William J. Funeral services for Lawrence County native, Beuford Lyons, 61, of Ashland, were to be conducted Wednesday, July 2, at 11 a.m. in the Oak Springs United Baptist Church by Elder Walter L. Pelphrey. Burial was in the Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens. Mr. Lyons died June 29 in King's Daughters' Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Lyons was born June 19, 1919, in Lawrence County, a son of the late Hydie B. and Catherine Chander Lyon. He was a route salesman for the Flav-o-Rich Dairy Co., was an Army veteran of World War II and had been an Ashland resident for 30 years. He was a member of the Oak Springs United Baptist Church, the Dairy and Food Workers Local 612, AFL-CIO and Poage Loge 325, F & AM. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Emma Jean Marcum Lyons; four daughters, Mrs. John L. Davis and Mrs. Carl D. Adams, both of Catlettsburg; Mrs. Donald M. MARCUM, John D.

Funeral services for former Louisan John D. Marcum, Sr. 73, of Lexington, were conducted July 8, in Heston Funeral Home by the Rev. George Mays. Burial was in Pine Hill Cemetery. Mr. Marcum died July 5, in Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington, of Lou Gehrig disease. Surviving are his wife Mrs. Frances Wright Marcum; a son, John D. Marcum, Jr., of Lexington; a sister, Mrs. FaDana Sisson of Louisa and a brother, J. N. Marcum, Jr. of Louisa. A football player in the 1920's and 30's, comptroller of the Lexington Signal Depot during World War II and Kentucky state finance officer for the Public Works Administration for seven years.. Mr. Marcum, was agency manager of Pioneer American Insurance Co., at the time of his retirement in 1964. He devised and installed cost-accounting procedures for the War Department during World War II and wrote technical manuals and devised form for the system. As a football official, he was an organizer and charter member of the Tri-State Officials Association numbering among his friends, Red Grange, Red Roberts, Vire Perry, Father Lumpkins, Red Weaver, and Jim Thorpe. He was a graduate of the Fork Union Military Academy at Fork Union, VA and of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville. He was found dead at the residence July 11. Mr. Pack was born August 5, 1960, in Lawrence County, a son of Carl and Linda Brown Pack, Jr., of route 5, Louisa. He was a coal miner with Wolf Creek Coal Co. and a member of the Demolay of Louisa. He was a pharmacist in Louisa, a Navy veteran of the Korean War and was a 1967 graduate of the University of Kentucky Pharmacy School. WIREY, Marion

Funeral services for Marion Wirey, 62, Las Vegas, NV, an executive of Sahara Hotel, were conducted July 9 in Las Vegas. He was married to the former Maxine Ball of the Blaine area and was the brother in law of assistant county judge-executive Nile Ball. Mr. Wirey died in the Southern Nevada Memorial Hospital following a heart attack. The Johnson County, IN native located in Las Vegas in 1946, after being stationed at Nellis Air Corps base during World War II attaining the rank of sergeant. He was employed with Sahara Hotel in 1963 when the resort opened its first Keno game. He was Keno shift boss for 16 years, and KENO assistant manager at Sahara at the time of his death. Prior to working for Sahara, he was employed at the Boulder Club and Harloe Club and Birdcage Casinos in Las Vegas. Mr. Bellomy died August 9, in Louisa Community Hospital. Mr. Bellomy was born October 25, 1890, in Lawrence County, a son of the late Samuel and Emiline Cross Bellomy. He was a life-long resident of that area, a member of the Tyree Methodist Church and was a retired employee of the Chessie System. His wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Humphrey Bellomy died in 1976. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Dolly Mullins of Ashland; two sons, Joseph Raymond Bellomy of Buchanan and Arlie N. Mr. Reed died August 13, in a Louisville hospital. Mr. Reed was born June 7,1 905 in Lawrence County, a son of the late John and Georgie Allison Reed. He was a retired employee of Sears in Louisville. His wife, Mrs. Pauline Jarred Reed, died in 1978. Surviving are a son, Walter David Reed of Louisville; and a sister, Mrs. Bessie Reed of Louisa. WILSON, Garland Elliott

Funeral services for former Louisan Garland Elliott Wilson, 71, of Clintwood, VA were conducted September 11 in the United Methodist Church with burial there. He died September 8, in Holston Valley Community Hospital in Kingsport, TN. He was born in Tuttle, OK, August 1, 1909, the son of Marcella Elliott Wilson and Richard A. Wilson, Sr. After working for the Kentucky Department of Highways for 23 years and Army service during WWII, Mr. Wilson was a construction engineer with Baker Engineers, Inc. in Alaska. In 1946, he became a resident of Clintwood, VA where he was employed with Clinchfield Railroad Company and was active in civic and church affairs for many years before his illness. Mr. Wilson served on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Heart Association and the Wesley Foundation of Clinch Valley College. He became a Kentucky Colonel in 1972. Having been in scouting as a youngster, he helped organize Troop No. 47 sponsored by the Clintwood United Methodist Church, served as local troop chairman, on district and council committees; District Chairman and was Lonesome Pine Council Delegate to the National Council Annual Meeting. In 1966 he received the Silver Beaver Award, the highest scouting honor given to an adult. The member of the Board of Directors of the Clintwood Kiwanis Club served on various committees and also supervised the construction and beginning operation of the Happy Valley Recreational Corporation swimming pool. As a member of the Clintwood United Methodist Church he was a choir member, Sunday School superintendent, chairman of various local committees, Lay Delegate to annual conference, local Lay Leader, and was chairman of the building committee when the church was rebuilt after a fire. He was on Holston Conference Board of Missions; was District Lay Leader of Big Stone Gap District and was on the District Planning Council. He was Registrar of the Southeast Virginia Laymen's Conference for several years and participated in the Lay Witness Movement, helping conduct numerous Lay Witness Missions to churches in the area. He was also Certified Lay Speaker. Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife, Vonda Hughes Wilson; two sisters, Nola Chambers and Frances Moore; one brother, Richard Wilson all of Louisa; a daughter, Sue Heaberlin and two grandchildren. Funeral services for former Lawrence county coroner and 50 year funeral director L. Byron Young, 73, will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in Young Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Gallie Isaac. Mr. Young, member of the Kentucky Funeral Directors Association 50 years in 1980, and a member of the First Methodist Church, died Monday, September 1, at 10:45 p.m. in Louisa Community Hospital. He was born May 1, 1907 at Cherokee, a son of Mrs. Emma Grubb Young of Louisa and the late Jim W. Young. He was a graduate of Louisa High School and Warsham College of Embalming, Chicago, IL. A 50 year member of KY, F. D. Association had received a 50 year Gold Certificate this year. He had served as President of Eastern KY. Funeral Directors Association and held offices with the State Funeral Association as a member of the Board. Locally, he served several years as Lawrence County Coroner. During WW II he assisted in the operations of Ground Observor Corp. He was active in securing the Lawrence County Fair Ground which later was sold to Louisa Carpet Mills. In 1947, he established the Young Funeral Home and was assisted by Leslie L. Wellman. He was chairman of the Committee which organized Fred M. Vinson Day, July 11, 1951, which honored the Chief Justice. Mr. Young had belonged to several civic and fraternal organizations but had resigned because of ill health. He also was co-founder of the Greenlawn Cemetery. Additional survivors include his wife, Mrs. Emily W. Young, of Louisa, one daughter, Mrs. Ruth Colvin of Pikeville; two sons, Major James Young of the U. S. Air Force of Germany and Laban E. Mr. Adams died October 20 in Oakmont Nursing Home in Flatwoods following an extended illness. Mr. Adams was born July 11, 1888 in Lawrence County, a son of the late Arthur and Elizabeth Horne Adams. He was a retired carpenter. BEVENS, Judge Wray

Funeral services for Charley native, Judge Wray Bevens, 73, of Piketon, OH, were conducted September 30 in the Grace United Methodist Church with burial in Beaver Union Cemetery at Piketon. Judge Bevens died September 27 in a Chillicothe, OH hospital. The retired jurist of Pike County Common Pleas Court was recently called to serve as common pleas judge in Hamilton County, He was the son of ex-Lawrence Countians, the late William and Martha Ann Chandler of Waverly. Survivors include his wife, Mary Cole Bevens, to whom he married in 1945; three sons, Wray Bevens, II, of New York City, Gordon E. Bevens, William Wray Bevens, both of Lake White, OH; a sister, Effie Cole of Lynchburg, OH; four brothers, and a sister preceded him in death.

 

Mr. Bevens attended the Georges Creek Elementary School until 1921; Beaver, OH High School to 1925; Ohio State University, 1925-1929; OSU College of Law, L.L.B. Degree, 1932 and Juris Doctor Degree 1970. He taught school at Beaver from 1926-1928; was executive secretary to Martin L. Davey, Governor of Ohio, 1937-1938; Chief Division of Ohio Aid for Aged, September 1938-April 1939. He enlisted in the U. S. Army, June 5, 1942. Military honors include Battle Star, Papican Campaign, New Guinea, Presidential Unit Citation, landing at Hollandia, May 1944, Dutch, New Guinea. He retired in June 1967 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Mr. Bevens was elected prosecuting attorney for Pike County in November 1948; State Representative, November 1960 serving three terms; Judge of Probate and Juvenile Courts in November of 1966.

He once managed Feeder's Supply of Ashland and was former owner of Caldwell's Market in Catlettsburg. He was a member and deacon of Hyland Heights Baptist Church and music director for 35 years. He died October 31 a the residence. Sgt. Roberts was born in United, WV, the son of Stella Carter Roberts of New Boston, OH and the late Marion Roberts. The veteran of World War II and Korean War was a member of the Fort Benning Masonic Lodge #579 and a civil service employee with the Fort Benning Post Engineers Plumbing Section for 12 years. Funeral services for Larry E. Adams, 20, Ulysses, were conducted Saturday, December 27, at 2 p.m. at the Louisa Church of God, Point Section. Mr. Adams was found in his car early Wednesday morning (December 24) with the motor still running, cause of death is undetermined. Mr. Adams was born August 27, 1960 in Lawrence County, the son of Tom and Joyce Simpson Adams. He was a 1978 graduate of Lawrence County High School and a veteran of the United States Army. At the time of his death he was employed by Maloneys of Paintsville. Additional survivors are two sisters, Ms. Debbie Adams of Ulysses and Miss Vicki Adams at home; two brothers, Walter T. Adams, Jr., Ulysses and Lindsey Bruce Adams, at home, maternal grandmother, Mrs. Ethel Simpson, Ulysses. Rev. John Simms officiated at the funeral with burial in the Graves Cemetery at Ulysses. Funeral services for Jim Robinette, 48, of Louisa were conducted December 26, in Young Funeral Home by the Rev. Kay Thompson, Jr. Burial was in Robinette Cemetery. Mr. Robinette died December 24 in J. J. Jordan Geriatric, Center following an extended illness. Mr. Robinette was born January 27, 1932 at Louisa, a son of the late John and Sarah Thompson Robinette. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Kathleen Chapman of Raceland, Mrs. Robert Holly of Louisa, and Mrs. Thelma Rice of Haverhill, OH; and two brothers, Thomas and John Robinette, Jr., both of Columbus. Funeral services for Mrs. Evaline Rowe, 80, of route 1, Fort Gay, were conducted December 2, at Macedonia Freewill Baptist Church, Genoa, WV with burial in Cox Cemetery at Genoa. Mrs. Rowe died November 29 at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Olive Robertson, route 1, Fort Gay, following an extended illness. She was born November 25, 1900 in Wayne County, WV, a daughter of the late Henry and Mary Jane Cyrus Copley. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Rowe in 1979. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Venia Kitts of Chicago, Mrs. Florida Wilson and Mrs. Hazel Harvey, both of Genoa, WV, Mrs. Robertson and Mrs. Jewell Watts of Kenova; five sons, Dude Rowe of Columbus, John H., Burgess and Ray Rowe, all of route 1, Fort Gay, and Ralph Rowe of Radnor, WV, a sister, Mrs. Emma Robertson of Dunlow, WV, a half sister, Zet Pack of Wayne, WV; 57 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Cora Shortridge; daughters Mary Prater, Peggy Zerga and Sheila Kelly; one step daughter, Carole Dias; one brother, James Shortridge and 13 grandchildren. Funeral services for Lawrence County native Gusta G. Steele, 69, of Grayson were conducted December 17 in the First Baptist Church of Grayson by ministers, Bob Waggoner and Earl Neal. Burial was in Carter County Cemetery. Mr. Steele died December 15. Mr. Steele was born July 16, 1911, in Lawrence County, a son of the late James C. and Ollie Steele Steele. He was a veteran of World War II and was a retired employee of Armco, Inc. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Vivian Cooke Steele; two sons, William Kendal and Paul A. Mrs. Stevens was born May 1, 1918, at route 1, Louisa, a daughter of the late Charlie and Lula Belle Hickman Nelson. Surviving are her husband, Ira "Dock" Stevens, three sons, Robert Kise, Joel D. and Michael R. Stevens, all of route 1, Louisa; a sister, Mrs. Marie Bradley of route 1, Louisa, three brothers, Delbert Nelson of Groveport, OH, Johnny Nelson of Columbus and Marvin P. His wife, Mrs. Nellie Hall Webster, died in March of this year. He was a retired maintenance employee with the Ashland Board of Education, was a resident of Lexington for 12 years and was a member of the Baptist Church.
