Ervin Castle, 71, died Sunday, December 12, in the Highland Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mr. Castle was born August 11, 1905 in Johnson County, a son of Willie and Tellie Meadows Castle. He was a resident of Paintsville, a retired miner and a member of the United Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Manda Slone Castle; two sons, Francis Castle of Marion, OH, and William H. (Bud) Castle of Cardington, OH; three daughters, Roberta Fairchild and Sue Wallen, both of Paintsville and Alice Horne of Columbus, OH; a sister, Mary VanHoose of Volga; 20 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 15 in the Old Union United Baptist Church with Reverends O. I. Williams and Lonza Reed officiating. Paint Union Association Minutes, September 1977--Ervin Castle was born August 11, 1905, departed this life December 12, 1976, at the age of 71.  He was the son of Willie and Tillie Meadows Castle. He was married to Amanda Slone. To this union was born 5 children. He was a member of the Old Union United Baptist Church at Staffordsville, KY.

Paint Union Association Minutes, September 1993--Amanda A. Castle of Paintsville, KY was born September 15, 1908 in Johnson County, KY. She was the daughter of the late James Monroe Slone and Minnie Sparks Slone. She was a member of the Paintsville United Baptist Church. She departed this life Tuesday, October 27, 1992, at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin Castle. Surviving are two sons, Ervin Francis Castle and William Harold Castle, three daughters, Roberta Castle, Alice Horne and Carolyn Sue Delong. Also surviving is a brother, James Slone, two sisters, Lola McKenzie and Clarice Pelphrey, 21 grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. We know our loss is shared by all who knew her.

Mattie Ratliff passed away on October 23 1970 in her Paintsville home. The native Johnson Countian was 61 years old. Burial took place two days later in the family cemetery at Turner Branch, under the direction of the Jones-Preston Funeral Home. Services were conducted earlier in the First Free Will Baptist Church of Paintsville by Claude Preston and Scott Castle. Surviving are her husband, Earl Ratliff; five sons of Paintsville, Clyde, James, Frank, Jimmie Lee, and Earl Ratliff Jr.; four daughters, Clara Fraley, Hattie Castle, and Shirley Kretzer, all of Paintsville, and Janice Wright of Ypsilanti, Mich.; a brother in Fallsburg, Clark Ratliff; one sister, Mrs. Troy Fairchild, of Staffordsville; 20 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Her parents were the late Isaac and Hattie Selvage Ward.

An extended illness ended in death on March 9 1971 for Ray Fairchild, 74, of Lowmansville. The former United Baptist and retired miner was born in Thelma to the late Joe and Atha Preston Fairchild. His wife Mary E. Fairchild, died last year. Elders Charley Hackney and O.I. Williams conducted services March 12 in the Georges Creek United Baptist Church. The Preston Funeral Home arranged for burial in the Slone Cemetery at Turner Branch, and Fairchild's grandson's served as pallbearers. Surviving are four sons. Ralph and Robert Fairchild of Dayton, Ohio; Ruel Fairchild of Boon's Camp and Ray H. Fairchild in Spencer, W. Va.; three daughters, Mrs. Ruby Slone of Paintsville, Mrs. Roberta Castle in Columbus, Ohio; and Mrs. Rushia Ann Christian of Centerburg, Ohio. Also surviving are a half-brother, George Fairchild; one brother in Thealka, Lawrence Fairchild; a sister from Pond Vreek, Flora Moore; 33 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Mary E. Fairchild, 71, passed away in a local hospital on July 22, 1970 after a prolonged sickness. Services were held on July 25, 1970 in the Mouth of Rush Freewill Baptist Church by Scott Griffith. The Preston Funeral Home took care of burial in the Slone Cemetery at Turner Branch. Mrs. Fairchild was the daughter of the late Green and Rachel M. Rister. She was born in Princeton, W. Va., August 12, 1898, and lived in Lowmansville at the time of her death. She is survived by her husband, Ray Fairchild; four sons, Ralph Fairchild of Springfield, Ohio, Robert Fairchild of Dayton, Ohio, Ruel Fairchild of Boons Camp, and Roy H. Fairchild of Spencer, W. Va.; three daughters, Roberta Castle of Columbus, Ohio, Ruby Slone of Paintsville, and Rushie Ann Christian of Sunbury, Ohio; one brother of Doublin, Ohio, Brady Rister; 33 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Mrs. Slone was born November 23, 1917, in Johnson County, to the late Harry and Nora Mayhan Stambaugh. She was a member of the Sitka Church of Christ. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Slone, on June 26, 1987. Surviving are one son, Clarence Walter Slone of Sitka; two daughters, Deborah Preston of Paintsville and Judith Lynn Preston of Salem, Illinois; two sisters, June Salyer of Ashland and Irene Horne of Springfield, Ohio; and four grandchildren. J. M. Slone, 81, well-known resident of this city, died in a local hospital at 7:40 a.m. Sunday, April 22, after suffering a heart attack. The son of the late Marvel and Elizabeth Wheeler Slone; he was born on the Hoods Fork of Blaine, September 27, 1881. He had lived in this city for forty-seven years, and operated a saddle, harness and shoe repair shop. He was a member of the United Baptist church. He was married June 13, 1914, at Sitka to the former Jane McKenzie who survives. Other survivors include four sons, Virgil and Clarence Slone, Sitka, Reginald and James Slone, Jr., both of this city; three daughters, Mrs. Hobert McKenzie, Flat Gap, Mrs. Irvin Castle, Staffordsville, Miss Clarice Slone, city; one brother, Proctor Slone, Sitka. Also surviving are thirty grandchildren and twenty-six great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the United Baptist church with O. I. Williams, F. F. Born in Lawrence County on May 8, 1894, he was the son of the late Hazekiah and Eliza Cook Borders. A retired miner and farmer, He had lived at Lowmansville all his life and was affiliated with the United Baptist church. Survivors include his wife, the former Vina Murray; two sons, Samuel R. Borders of Grove City, OH and Melvin Borders of Santa Barbara, CA; five daughters, Mrs. Anna L.
