A telegram was received here Friday from Missouri announcing the death of Felix Garred, son of Mr. D.W. Garred of this county. Orders were sent for the transmission of his body to his old home; and on Sunday it arrived by special train. The burial took place near the old home, eight miles above Louisa, on Monday. The deceased was 33 years old and unmarried. he died rather suddenly, from pleurisy. During several years past he has been in various parts of the West, but for some time he and his brother Dick had been located in southwestern Missouri, where their business prospects were bright.
Death is received most unwelcomely, possibly, by those in the prime of their life; and it calls forth the sympathies of strangers, even, to see a promising, hopeful young man stricken down by death’s ruthless hand. We offer a full measure of sympathy to the relatives.
Dec 30, 1892
Peach Orchard: Death had invaded the home of David Garred on of the oldest citizens of the Sandy Valley. He came to where he now lives in the year 1839, they raised a large family, they lost on little girl who died when she was about 2 years old. The balance all lived till grown, they have been healthy and Felix Garred was the first to fall. He was born Dec 24, 1860 and departed this life Dec 16, 1892 at 4a.m. He was in Cartersville MO., when the death angle called for him. He had been a sufferer for several years, but his last illness was of short duration. He bore his affliction with patience and often called on the Lord for help and the word of God says whosoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. His Bro. Dick was with him when he died. He is satisfied that he now rests in Heaven. He was always kind and obedient to his parents, he was loved by all who knew him. He was industrious and was struggling to make something of himself, but that God too wise to err and too good to do wrong, called for him and he was ready. He leaves many friends to mourn the loss of a son and brother. He was brought home and laid in the church yard at Garred’s Chapel. There were many friends in attendance. The funeral was attended by the writer. May God bless the bereaved one, and may they all live so as to meet in the “sweet bye and bye, “ where parting is no more, where the word good-bye, is never heard, where the last look is never taken, where the tears are all wiped away. GARRED, Luella
Luella, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee A, Garred, living 8 miles south of Louisa, died last Saturday morning after a brief illness. The funeral took place on Monday and the body was laid away in the Garred burial grounds near the home. The funeral was preached by Rev. H. O. Chambers, pastor of the M. E. Church, South, of Louisa, and he was assisted in the services by Rev. Muncey. Relatives and friends were there from Louisa, Huntington and Charleston. Luella was only 7 years of age. About a week previous to her death she began to complain of a pin in her thigh. The trouble continued intermittently and after examination by the parents they decided the pain was due to rheumatism. By Wednesday the suffering became so acute that a physician was called. He found that nothing could be done for her, however, as the case proved to be a virulent and fatal form of erysipelas. She suffered greatly before death brought relief. She was a beautiful child. This was the first death in a family of 9 children, of which she was next to the youngest. Her sister, Miss Rebecca, who was at school at Richmond, KY, arrived soon after the end had come for the little one, and a brother, Lys, reached here from New York on Sunday afternoon.
