Funeral services for Smith Adams, Sr., 79, of Fallsburg were conducted Tuesday, April 4, in Young Funeral Home by the Rev. Paul R. Diamond and the Rev. Amon Diamond. Burial was in Short Cemetery. Mr. Adams died Sunday, April 2, in Louisa Community Hospital, following an extended illness. Mr. Adams was born July 8, 1898 at Irad, a son of the late Thomas and Martha Blankenship Adams. He was a retired employee of the Louisa Supply Co and was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. His wife, Mrs. Ida Berry Adams, died in 1967. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Gladys Diamond of Fallsburg and Mrs. Eva Holbrook of Las Vegas, NV; three sons, Jack Adams, of route 4, Louisa, Henry Jay Adams of New Carlisle, OH and Smith Adams, Jr. of route 3, Louisa; a sister, Mrs. Highley Jane Adams, of Circleville, OH; 22 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. Gallie Isaac and Rev. Paul Diamond officiating. Burial was in the Short Cemetery on Route 3, Louisa. She was born on Route 3, Louisa, April 24, 1891, daughter of the late William and Alafair Spillman Berry. She was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors include the husband, Smith Adams, two daughters, Mrs. Earsel Webb, of Las Vegas, NV and Mrs. Ray Diamond, Fallsburg, KY; three sons, Jack Adams, Route 4 Louisa, Smith Adams, Jr., route 3, Louisa, and Henry J. Adams, Dayton, OH; two sisters, Mrs. Frank Newsome, Route 3, and Mrs. J. M. Adams, Route 1, Louisa; 22 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Ball, Sr., and Martha Short Ball. He was a retired master carpenter, a Korean War Air Force veteran, and a member of United Brotherhoos of Carpenter and Jointers of American Local 472, Ashland. Survivors include his wife, Bernice A. Ball of Louisa; a daughter, Vanessa T. Ball of Louisa; two sons, Blaine G. Ball III of Marietta, GA, and Stephen R. Survivors include one sister, Thelma Roberts, of Louisa; one brother, Blaine G. Ball, Jr., of Louisa and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. When word was received early Friday morning of the death of Mr. Berry, members of the family on entering Mrs. Berry's room to communicate the news to her found that she had passed quietly away. Her husband, the late William Berry, died in 1939. They were natives of Lawrence County having lived in the Twin Branch section all their lives. She is survived by 3 daughters, Mrs. Jim Adams, Mrs. Frank Newsome and Mrs. Smith Adams, all of route 3, 1 sister, Mrs. Jim Berry of Yatesville and 2 brothers, Arthur and Willie Spillman of Louisa, route 3. He operated the Clevenger Taxi here for the past 20 years. He was a member of the Free Will Baptist church, W. O. Johnson Post No. 89, American Legion, and the Louisa D. A. V Chapter. Funeral rites will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. from the Louisa Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. William W. Moore and the Rev. J. C. Hager officiating. Burial will be made in the Short Cemetery, route 3, Louisa. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Opal Marcum Clevenger, to whom he had been married 30 years; one daughter, Mrs. William Miller of Prestonsburg, KY; two sons, William J. Thomas Hayes, one of Louisa and Lawrence County's elderly citizens, succumbed early Thursday morning at the General Hospital following a short illness. The 94 year old citizen was stricken at his home on Saturday, February 5, and afterwards removed to the hospital where he remained until death. A son of the late Allen and Julia Carter Hayes, early families of the Yatesville section, he was a member of the Yatesville Methodist Church, and a Kentucky Colonel. Mr. Hayes married Mary Jane Short, who preceded him in death on November 24, 1951. A pioneer in the oil venture in Lawrence County and other areas, he opened the Yatesville-Busseyville filed and the Maggie Stump wells, also was instrumental in promoting the Martha-Keaton fields. He is credited discovering the first oil in the Berea grit here as early as 1914. He pursued the oil industry until ill health overtook him and he had to retire close at home, until his last illness, a stroke. Funeral rites were conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. from the Young Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lowell Langefeld and the Rev. Lindsey Cyrus, a nephew of the deceased, officiating. Burial was in the Short Cemetery on route 3, Louisa. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. R. H. Chatfield of Collingswood, NJ and Mrs. O. J. Short, Louisa; five grandchildren, Mrs. Robert Riggs, La Canada, CA, R. H. Chatfield, Jr., Nashville, TN, Hugh Chatfield, Louisa, and John Short of Knoxville, TN and six great grandchildren. Mrs. Marcum had been a member of the Methodist Church since childhood. Junior O'Daniel, 13, son of W. H. O'Daniel, of Walbridge, died instantly of a crushed skull sustained Monday shortly after noon while he and his father and another brother, Lucien, 20, were cutting a tree for wood. The tree, only about a foot through, fell into limbs of a nearby tree and then sprung back, falling up the hill, the butt meanwhile sliding down the hill, Junior, was as standing about 15 feet from the trunk when the tree commenced falling, was hit in the head by the upper branches and killed instantly. the father and older brother were not hurt. They had gone to a hill near their home shortly after eating lunch to fell a tree for wood. All had been ill the previous week with flu. Junior was a pupil in the seventh grade of the Walbridge school and attended Sunday school there also. Funeral was conducted at the home Wednesday afternoon with Rev. Dave Hewlett officiating with burial made in the Deephole Branch cemetery west of Louisa. The O'Daniel family moved from near Yatesville to Walbridge 2 years ago. The boy's mother, Mrs. Genevieve Berry O'Daniel, died 18 months ago of blood poisoning developing from a briar scratch. Sara Elizabeth Rice, 94, of Louisa, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Feb. 20, 2012, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland. Born April 11, 1917, in Louisa, she was the daughter of the late Emma Short Rice and David Elijah Rice. She was a graduate of Marshall University with a bachelor of arts degree in education. Sara was a teacher in the Lawrence County schools for 41 years, teaching at Fallsburg Elementary and at Deephole and Yatesville one-room schools. Sara worked with the 4-H Club for many years, receiving the Kentucky 4-H Centennial Hall of Fame Award in 2009. She considered all of her former students and 4-H members her children. She loved to sew, and many of her 4-H members learned sewing from Sara. She was a member of Myrtle Chapel Church, where she taught the Beginners Youth Sunday school class and served as church secretary and treasurer for many years. She selflessly cared for others and always offered support to family and friends, encouraging them to become the best they could be. Sara was loved by many for her work and willingness to help others in the Fallsburg community. She received the WSAZ Hometown Hero award in 1999. Sara was a Kentucky colonel and a member of the Lawrence County Education Association. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Moore; three brothers and four sisters-in-law, David (Emma Elizabeth) Rice, Thomas (Elizabeth) Rice, James French (Laura) Rice and Jackie Rice; and a nephew, David Eli Moore. Survivors include a brother, Jack Rice of Fallsburg; a brother-in-law, Ralph Moore of Louisa; seven nieces, Susan Gipson, Linda Beth Ferguson, Joyce Burton, Wanda Blevins, Marsha Shannon, Debra Savage Rice and Sara Elizabeth “Penny” Rice; and eight nephews, Paul Rice, Carl Rice, Richard Rice, Donald Rice, Herb Rice, Joe Rice, Randy Savage Rice and Gregory Rice; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Professor Rice has been a tenured professor with The Washington College of Law, American University for 36 years. She was born January 2, 1875, at Fallsburg, KY, a daughter of the late James and Adeline Evans Rice. Her husband, John Salyers, died in 1936. She had been a member of the Grace Methodist Church in Bluefield for the past 16 years. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Beatrice Petre of Elkhart, IN, Mrs. Grace Green of Kaleva, MI and Mrs. C. W. Mr. Short, a farmer, was a retired foreman of the Kentucky Highway Department in Lawrence County. He was born at Louisa route 4, September 13, 1879, a son of the late James and Sarah Whitt Short, and was a member of Louisa Lodge 270, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. from Myrtle Chapel with the Rev. J. C. Hager and Rev. Dave Hewlett officiating. Interment will be in the Short Cemetery under the direction of Young Funeral Home. As the late afternoon sun was painting the autumn leaves in all their beautiful but sad colors, the body of Morton Short was lowered to its final resting place Sunday. With bared heads his comrades, members of the Junior Order, read the last rites over their dead brother. In the valleys the shadows were lengthening  as the sorrowing family and friends of the young man wended their way homeward. The sun lingering over the hill soon faded and was gone. Morton, oldest son of Sheriff and Mrs. Jay Short had been ill only a short 10 days before he was taken Friday night. He became ill with flu which turned to pneumonia causing his death. He was only 20 years old. Funeral services were held at Myrtle Chapel with Rev. H. B. Hewlett and Rev. Dave Al Hayes officiating. Friends of the young man, numbering close to a thousand crowded into the little church house to pay their last respects to one they had known and liked so well. Kenis M. Short, 82, former Louisa chief of police and long a resident of the city, died early Wednesday morning at his home here. He had been ill for about a year. Death came Wednesday morning at 4 a.m. Mr. Short was born at Blaine in 1856, a son of the late Jim and Martha Chaffin Short. He had resided in Louisa for 45 years. For many years he served as engineer on government work in western Kentucky and nearby sections. Later he served as policeman in Louisa. He was an honorary member of the Louisa council Jr. O.U.A.M. and a member of the Louisa Christian Church. Funeral will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 from the Louisa Methodist Church with Rev. She was born at Coffee Creek, KY, August 3, 1888, a daughter of the late David and Lydia Fugit Hamilton. She was married to John J. Short 46 years ago. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Myrtles Chapel at Five Forks by the Rev. Dave Hewlett with burial in the Short Cemetery. Curtright Funeral Home in charge. Mrs. Short was a member of the Methodist Church for 30 years, also a member of the Rebekah Lodge of Louisa. the Rebekah's held service at the church. He was a painter. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Myrtle Chapel Church with the Rev. Kelly Patton officiating. Burial will be made in Short Cemetery, Route 3, Louisa. The body arrived in Louisa on Wednesday morning and was taken to the Curtright Funeral Home where it remained. Survivors, other than the father, are three sons, Franklin Short and Carlos Wayne Short of Louisa and John Alvin Short of Huntington, WV; two brothers, Jay Short, Jr. and Wayne B. Lotice was born November 21, 1922 in Lawrence County, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Henry and Lutisha Short Marcum. She was a homemaker and member of the Hoods Creek FWB Church.
Lotice is survived by two daughters and son-in-laws, Colleen and John VanHorn of Westwood, Ky. and Mary Beth and Anthony Baumgardenar of Louisa, Kentucky.
Two Sons and daughters-in-laws, Clarence E. and Delaphine Spears of Louisa, Kentucky and Charles L. and Deborah Spears of Huntington, West Virginia.
10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday October 24th at 2:00 pm at the Wilson Funeral Home by Rev. Dale Hensley.
Burial will follow in the Short Cemetery at Louisa, Kentucky.

Mrs. Margaret Vanhoose, 104, believed to be one of Lawrence County's oldest residents, died at the home of her son, Willie Vanhoose on route 3, Louisa, Monday, Jan 19 at 9:55 a.m. after an illness of 3 months. Born at Whitehouse, KY, Mrs. Vanhoose was the daughter of Ned and Polly Wiley Castle, who came to Lawrence County from Virginia in the pioneering days. she was the great granddaughter of Jennie Wiley who was the first white woman to enter the Big Sandy Valley. Mrs. Vanhoose was instrumental in the organization of the Freewill Baptist Church in this county a number of years ago. Although no birth records were kept at the time Mrs. Vanhoose was born, calculations of close relatives placed her age at 104 or 105 years. She had lived through 4 major wars--The Civil War, The Spanish-American War, and World Wars I and II. She was a young woman of 18 or 19 years of age when the War between the States was fought. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan 20 at the home of Mr. Willie Vanhoose, conducted by the Rev. William W. Moore. Burial followed in the Short cemetery under the direction of Young Funeral Home.
